Government Land is a tune.

Someone suggested destroying Everwhen upthread, which is a pity as it's the only track from 100th Window I love.

i got a 12" for Gunshot that sounds a lot like the dancehall style LP. super good. seek it immediately.

Besides "In the Light," what is worth checking out?

Dance Hall Style is essential. Get Wise, Pure Ranking, are great. Feel Good All Over comp is great. Showcase is good.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 17 September 2009 02:17 (fourteen years ago) link

only recently heard this cover of Love Hangover. super nice.

shit, i see that i've recommended this track before, oops. anyway, there it is. next time this thread gets revived, odds are good i'll recommend it again.

Absolute classic. Spying Glass is one of the most perfect songs ever.

Dance Hall Style is essential.

"In The Light" is great, but the compilation "The Prime Of Horace Andy" doesn't have a bad track on it as far as I'm concerned.

Incidentally I love the idiosyncrasies on the song "In The Light", the way he pronounces "shining bright" as "shaynan brot" etc.

this one's the first comp i picked up when my obsession began. never disappoints

andrew m., Thursday, 17 September 2009 16:04 (fourteen years ago) link

you need "natty dread a weh she want" -- the 12", or even better, the compilation of the same name, with lots of heavy lovers/roots crossover.

also his early studio one LPs, including the first of many named "skylarking," are pretty great, even with the dodgy covers (of e.g. cat stevens).

Good Vibes is my favorite other thing by a pretty wide margin (disco mixes!!!).

Did he do anything bad?

I mean as in "bad music" not "was he ever a naughty boy?"

Not that I've heard.

I don't love everything he did with Massive Attack, but his JA stuff is remarkably consistent.

I'm sitting here listening to Horace Andy tracks on youtube and an ad for BIG DOGS CLOTHING popped up. Good thing I'm not actually high or I might've actually ordered some.

I just nearly recommended you play Gunshot but decided to scroll up and see what was said earlier. Needless to say, I really love Gunshot.

Though I’ve been listening to more and more dub and roots reggae in the last few years, I wasn’t familiar with Horace Andy until “Dance Hall Style” was noted on the Pitchfork best of the 80s list earlier this week. Now I’ve heard three of his albums from that decade and really love all three of them. Looking forward to going backward into some of the earlier albums.

Can't get enough Horace Andy. Though I was always pedantically irked by the unnecessary detail of 'There's a man that lives next door, in my neighbourhood, in my neighbourhood'. Where else could 'next door' be?
