dog comes off as pretty smart in that article

forks (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 19:17 (thirteen years ago) link

ya. hopefully he gets a good new home.

got electrolytes (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Motherfucker. I'm afraid the dog won't find a new home because a dog that has bitten someone, esp a pit, will prob be court-ordered for euthanasia.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 19:35 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, that's unfortunately likely the case
though it sounds like given the choice of euthanasia or being dragged around by this asshole as a weapon, that poor animal is still drawing the lesser of two horrible situations

in a fractal nutshell (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 21 August 2011 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah there was unfortunately also a case here in the Bay Area where an un-neutered pit killed his pregnant owner just a couple of weeks ago.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Sunday, 21 August 2011 14:24 (twelve years ago) link

Wowza pit bull hysteria in that Age article is out of control. Back to the 1980s US thinking for these dudes.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Sunday, 21 August 2011 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

1980s think would be more Doberman pinscher/Rottweiler, tho, wouldn't it?

Blind Diode Jefferson (kingfish), Sunday, 21 August 2011 17:29 (twelve years ago) link

yeah jordan, he had two ~100 lb dogs on leash and was walking down the street. the cat was sunning on the walk up to the house. my own dog lunges at that cat the same way, but he is easier to control because he only weighs 10 lbs

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Sunday, 21 August 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

why do people act like pit bulls are an endanged species or something__ they are a breed of a domesticated animal - they are essentially a product of human genetic engineering - they are our folly

Splendid Curving Oasis of Ivory (Latham Green), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:10 (twelve years ago) link

in the midst of this ugliness it feels inappropriate to say, but in moving out and breaking up with my girl i'm losing custody of the dog and it's breaking my heart.
luckily, girl is very very cool and allowing open visitation. Not gonna be the same.

Reddit Me Bro (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

There are a few duds in the pack but they have a good genetic makeup! Very rugged and athletic with few problems other than skin allergies. They can live in the city and stay slim. I don't own one because they are very stubborn.

Die, Foghat, Die (Mount Cleaners), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

that sucks forks. sorry to hear that.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:31 (twelve years ago) link

pit bulls seem to either be really nice or really sketch in my experience, sometimes both

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

come to thikn of it I think all breeds should be un-bred back into genetically healthier mutts - mutts rule

Splendid Curving Oasis of Ivory (Latham Green), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

issues with my pit: trick back leg leads to limping so she's not so good at running, she is a stubborn and willful little bitch, dog/human aggression, likes to forage for organic matter on sidewalk, demands attention on a regular basis, requires heavy daily socialization/exercise which means she needs to be put up in a prohibitively expensive doggie daycare rather than left to hang around the house, people are prejudiced against pits so they often act like I'm carrying a gun

positives with my pit: amazingly communicative (we've worked out about a thirty word/gesture vocabulary that we can use to really let each other understand what we need), intensely loyal and protective of both me and girl, generally good at responding to commands, very loving and cuddly and playful, learns to accept new people in her life with about a week of exposure, no chronic skin/fur/breath/digestive/health problems, will eat anything but doesn't eat shit or inorganic matter, smells lightly of fritos, doesn't shed, doesn't damage furniture, very well housetrained, great with puppies and babies

Reddit Me Bro (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:39 (twelve years ago) link

'smells lightly of fritos' is great

Reddit Me Bro (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

many dogs smell lightly of fritos, for example: dachshunds, basset hounds

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

my dog's feet smell like popcorn

salsa shark, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

"pit bulls seem to either be really nice or really sketch in my experience, sometimes both"

This pretty much applies to like 98% of dog breeds.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:49 (twelve years ago) link

Although sketchy pit bulls obviously have drawbacks that annoying toy dog breeds don't.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:51 (twelve years ago) link

hmm i've never met a "really sketch" pomeranian that killed my neighbor's cat

xpost, exactly

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:51 (twelve years ago) link

you're arguing dog size there really because i have met some fucking horrendous poodles and spaniels and german shepherds that i trust way less than terriers.

Reddit Me Bro (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:54 (twelve years ago) link

I smell like popcorn and I dont go around eating cats

Splendid Curving Oasis of Ivory (Latham Green), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:55 (twelve years ago) link

Reddit Me Bro (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:57 (twelve years ago) link

why will she love me

Splendid Curving Oasis of Ivory (Latham Green), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:57 (twelve years ago) link

chihuahuas are the worst in my experience for being aggressive bitey beasts. and not only are they nasty, they are also ugly. sorry, chihuahua fans.

salsa shark, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

I am a bitey beast too

Splendid Curving Oasis of Ivory (Latham Green), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

ugh that some of the opinions in that article are dumb - if pit bulls are banned, do they think that the kind of ppl who train/breed them to be so aggressive will also magically disappear?? no, they'll just use other dog breeds instead.

just1n3, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but other breeds a re weak and can be kicked away

Splendid Curving Oasis of Ivory (Latham Green), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

german shepherds? dobermans?

just1n3, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

Pits and bulldogs do have disproportionately strong bites/jaws, and a style of bite that clamps and grinds, instead of being a quick slash with teeth or some other kind. I'm not sure one is "better" or "worse", though.

brb recalibrating my check engine light (Laurel), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 20:37 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, they are a victim of their own genetics in a lot of ways. i just wish there was more focus on the owners of vicious dogs.

just1n3, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

Or that the vicious dogs have changed breeds over the decades as social trends have mutated. Hell, the switch from dobermans to rottweilers to pitties only tool, what, 15 years?

It's like even the rate that assholes ccycle thru fad breeds has accelerated along with everything else.
