great portraits of baseball players

I haven't looked at this thread in a while.

One thing about the Dick Allen photo above, the one where he's smoking and juggling three baseballs: that was used for the cover of Sports Illustrated. I can't remember if it was '72, heading into his near-Triple Crown year, or '73, right after. Pretty sure such a cover shot would be verboten today; there's lots of things the player could be doing that wouldn't have been okay then, but it's the other way around when it comes to juggling baseballs...I mean, smoking.

I tried to post this way upthread and it didn't take. One of my favourite SI covers ever:

I wish they'd redo it with either Halladay and Lincecum, or Pujols and...Hallady and Lincecum it is.

is it pretty jarring to see all these big time, big-assed Pittsburgh players, they've been horrible ever since I was 7!

"Harvard Eddie" Grant, third baseman for the Cincinnati Reds, 1911. Eddie, a Harvard grad who practiced law after his retirement from baseball, was among the first to enlist in the Army after the United States entered World War I in 1917. An infantry captain, he was killed by an exploding shell in France, where he is buried.

here's a picture of joe dimaggio with my great grandfather. he was director of the Yankees broadcast when Joe was an announcer and eventually became close friends. hope it's relevant.
