1-1 at the half, RSL holding their own

Frightening, but full of facts that are difficult to argue with. (dan m), Thursday, 21 April 2011 03:00 (thirteen years ago) link

finishes 2-2, congrats rsl

Oh shit, I hadn't seen that the Rayados were in the final. Hope they win as they still are the only club whose jersey I own! When is the return leg?

next wednesday iirc

o cool i didn't see the second equalizer. way to go rsl.
yeah i couldn't believe that of these two teams, it's monterey that plays on an american football field.

mizzell, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:09 (thirteen years ago) link

The field they play on belongs to the Tecnologico de Monterrey, huge university who has the best Mexican American football uni team. I think the rayados are looking to get a different stadium.

Jibe, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:14 (thirteen years ago) link

That first sentence is very muddled. "which has the best American football university team in Mexico" is what it should say to be clearer.

Jibe, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh I have a really silly question, but everytime I see Real Salt Lake written i can't help but wonder how people in the US pronounce it: Real (as in Real Madrid) or real (as in opposite of fake)? Or some other way maybe? Sorry if this sounds really stupid.
Also thanks for the highlights from last week. Loved seeing that stadium and team again.

Jibe, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Good for them but their name irks me. What is there either Spanish or Royal about SLC?

Concatenated without abruption (Michael White), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Mormons like gold? idk. Everyone I've ever heard says "Real" the Spanish way. I've seen blogs use it in the opposite of fake way, but in an ironic fashion. Everyone makes fun of it for being ridiculous and mis-placed, "Fake Salt Lake" is the standard dig.

I think they're gonna beat Monterrey tomorrow night tbh. They're pretty much impossible to beat at home. Both teams will missing key players, Beckerman for RSL and De Nigris for Monterrey, but Salt Lake is the deepest team in MLS and I don't think they'll have trouble adapting.

i don't have a problem with the name, mainly cause RSL works as an acronym, plus there are plenty of teams all over the world named for famous football teams (there's an arsenal in argentina, an everton in chile, etc). what confuses me is why they took the real name and the colors of real's biggest rivals.

mizzell, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 00:01 (thirteen years ago) link

turned it on just in time for the half, 1-0 Monterrey

Couldn't manage to stay up late enough to watch this game. Way to go Rayados! I'll finally have a club to root for at the club world cup.

carstens, Thursday, 9 June 2011 22:36 (twelve years ago) link

ah, the tainted meat excuse
anyway they recovered enough to beat cuba 5-0. and they should still be able to beat everyone easily except the us.

mizzell, Friday, 10 June 2011 23:20 (twelve years ago) link

More believable in this case than in Contador's, tbf.

Nice pregame with Eric Wynalda mentioning the Mexico doping, not knowing the name of the substance and then not actually explaining what the situation is. Then I'm pretty sure Cobi Jones referred to Panama as an "island nation."

wmlynch, Sunday, 12 June 2011 00:01 (twelve years ago) link

That's why I like watching on the Spanish channels. They just said "Clarence Goodson -- el hijo bien" and they say shit like that all the time. If they get things wrong/stupid, I probably won't understand.

Newcastle are picking up some likeable/decent players.

Is tonight's game really important? Debating whether to watch.

boxall, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 21:46 (twelve years ago) link

yes, it is really important

dan m, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 23:07 (twelve years ago) link

Caught the second half. Dempsey, yikes. Why no Agudelo?

boxall, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 14:31 (twelve years ago) link

Big Bradley is contractually obligated to keep giving Sacha Kljestan chances, it seems.

dan m, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 14:45 (twelve years ago) link

Saturday, New Meadowlands Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J.
Costa Rica vs. Honduras, 5 p.m.
Mexico vs. Guatemala, 8 p.m.

Sunday, RFK Stadium, Washington, D.C.
Jamaica vs. United States, 3 p.m.
Panama vs. El Salvador, 6 p.m.

Jamaica is like a team full of wingers, it seems. Should be a stronger test than Panama was. Mexico going to roll dis ting of course.

dan m, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 15:00 (twelve years ago) link

Team looked lazy and completely unambitious against Guadeloupe. How many times did Dempsey manage not to score with an empty net in front of him?

wmlynch, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

A soccerball comparison doesn't come immediately to mind, but Dempsey's worst miss reminded me of Leon Lett vs. Don Beebe in SB XXVII.

boxall, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 16:28 (twelve years ago) link

really wish Guatemala had pulled it off vs Mexico

USA/Jamaica looks pretty wide open, both sides have had chances in the first half

dan m, Sunday, 19 June 2011 19:56 (twelve years ago) link
