'the butcher' plays some rhythm games similar to 'little by little' but i think it works a lot better here...neither the kick nor the bass hit on the downbeat, so when the main beat finally drops in the middle it feels like everything flips around/snaps into place (but in a much more satisfying way than 'lxl').

The Butcher should have been on the album.

Melissa W, Saturday, 16 April 2011 20:21 (thirteen years ago) link

hmm, I think Supercollider (7:02) must be the longest Radiohead song? paging LJ

Z S, Saturday, 16 April 2011 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

And the longest for no reason!

Melissa W, Saturday, 16 April 2011 20:45 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm just now listening. was not a fan of Supercollider in its live incarnations so..

Z S, Saturday, 16 April 2011 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not good.

Melissa W, Saturday, 16 April 2011 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Not getting into the album at all.

djh, Saturday, 16 April 2011 21:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Yup longest Supercollider must be the longest Radiohead song yet, and doesn't go anywhere. Nobody was expecting "paranoid android 2" at this point but still... even Faust Arp seemed more dynamic and that one was 2 minutes long.

Moka, Sunday, 17 April 2011 03:11 (thirteen years ago) link

oops typed "longest" twice by mistake.

Moka, Sunday, 17 April 2011 03:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Are people aware that if they've paid for the newspaper album or digital album, they can download Supercollider & The Butcher for free from the King of Limbs website? Because I wasn't til just now.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 08:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Apparently those downloads are only 128kb? There are 320kb ones very easily findable...

lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 08:35 (thirteen years ago) link

They've been upgraded to 320kb apparently. If you've bought the digital album you can download wavs.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 08:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Supercollider is quite nice, not feeling the Butcher at all really. Where all these tracks fall down (and Little By Little for that matter) is a lack of force in either the beats or the bass (or both). I'm not suggesting they suddenly turn into Ill Blu or something but the music they're influenced by would never be built on such a brittle skeleton, and the end result is kind of anaemic.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 09:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the opposite... the beats and bass are pretty much the only thing holding most of the songs together. The problem is that it's all backbone and not enough muscle/flesh.

Moka, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 10:02 (thirteen years ago) link

It doesn't help that Thom is often at his worse over that sort of beat, he doesn't quite seem to know what to do with his voice.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 10:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I only see Melissa W in Radiohead threads

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 13:02 (thirteen years ago) link

and Mad Men threads.

Your observational skills are lacking.

same here

Is Supercollider a cover of the Fountains Of Wayne Song that closely resembles 'Shoulder'-era Oasis?

*fingers crossed*

Just got the email this morning notifying me that I could download these. I think its pretty cool for them to throw these out there for people that have paid for is, especially those of us that paid for the big box and are still waiting.

I bought TKOL and got the "thank you" email, followed the link and it wanted to charge me £6.00 for the songs. Like fuck.

"The Butcher" is amazing.

after about a dozen listenings, i have a newfound appreciation for this album... that still doesn't warrant anything beyond this being my least favorite of their work.

but i still rather dig the subtleties, like the "blooming" of the guitars on... er, that last song... and percussion that really carries itself like no other album before it. sorta.

kelpolaris, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link

So, anybody got their newspaper album yet? Mine turned up about 10 minutes ago:

you should post more pics! esp. of what being a "newspaper album" entails and maybe some snippets of those 650pieces of artwork

(because i cannot be bothered to buy this album)

kelpolaris, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 18:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Will do. The 650 pieces of artwork looks like a sheet of blotter acid.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 18:55 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, i'm assunming that's it muting thru the partially transparent lettering and am not making a stretch when i say that it looks like christmas wrapping paper

but thank you! (in advanced)

I kinda hope mine doesn't get delivered today since its pouring outside and it will likely be sitting in the rain for hours.

Wow, that's really nice. I know it kind of came and went without much fuss, but I really like King of Limbs - "Codex" would be in a POX for me.

She Got the Shakes, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 10:35 (twelve years ago) link

That's a great song! Deeply atmospheric, it would've stood proud on KoL.

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 10:53 (twelve years ago) link

Wasn't sure about this new one at first until the 2-minute mark - lovely.

OMG THEY CLONED PHIL!!!!

oh wait.

He always was the best thing about that band, really.

Thom Yorke has never had a decent haircut in his life, has he?

Karen D. Tregaskin, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 12:58 (twelve years ago) link

Yep, it's too bad that wasn't on King of Limbs, either as an addition to the original tracklist or as a replacement for one of the weaker tracks.

Z S, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 14:00 (twelve years ago) link

Once I had a nightmare where my dad was much older, and his eyes showed that he had gone insane. And I sat there for what seemed like hours listening to him, coming to terms with my dad having lost his mind. For some reason that shot of Thom at the end of the clip reminded me a lot of that dream. A weird, fleeting glimpse of him at 76 years old, yelling at someone

Z S, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

Loving this song.

Melissa W, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 14:50 (twelve years ago) link

Weird to me how a guy who was so mind-bogglingly in-sync with the music in "Lotus Flower" keeps bouncing to a totally different beat in this.

brodieopolari.... oh fuck it (kelpolaris), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 21:21 (twelve years ago) link

but as it stands, i really dig this song and kinda wanna hear more. hopefully it doesn't lose that draw that only kept king of limbs to about a one-week wonder.

I'm so obsessed with this new song.

We make bouquets that fade immediately. (Turangalila), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 02:54 (twelve years ago) link

Staircase is far better than anything that was released on The King of Limbs. Maybe they're not a lost cause just yet.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 04:25 (twelve years ago) link

For a long time I thought Give Up The Ghost was the only good track here, but now I'm a bit obsessed by Little By Little. Seems a lot of the tracks on this album are based on working around a "drone track" - not a single note, but a repetition of some sort on which to stack instruments and voice over. Give Up The Ghost has that acoustic loop/chant thing all the way through, and Little By Little seems to be based on an upwards-winding riff that plays snakes and ladders with itself.

the Sandalled Vandal (dog latin), Monday, 27 June 2011 10:49 (twelve years ago) link

"Little By Little" saved this album for me.
