hey guess what guise, the refs suck

"To be honest over the last few games I think I’ve spoke too much about referees," Beckham said. "They’re becoming the stars of the MLS, and that’s obviously not what teams want and clubs want. You want the players to be playing out there. You want it to be fair. I just don’t think the consistency’s there. I think there’s bad calls, and we’ve had our majority of bad calls over the last few games, but it’s ruining games. It’s ruining our preparation for games. I’ll probably get in trouble, but it’s gone on too long. We want that consistency to be there, and we want to keep our players on the field."

thread of missing morales, this is getting silly

New York Red Bulls striker Luke Rodgers doesn't like Los Angeles Galaxy star Landon Donovan.

He made that very clear to the New York Post on Monday.

"In this league, he's a respected person, but he's telling Titi [Thierry Henry] to [screw] off. The kid's a [expletive] head," Rodgers, who was clearly upset at Donovan after the Red Bulls and Galaxy completed a 1-1 draw on Saturday night in L.A., told the Post. "I don't care. I just think the kid's a [expletive] jerk. I don't care what you put.

"After Henry scored he's running the whole length of the pitch to shout at the linesman. He must have eyes like a hawk to tell if he's offsides. I tackled the keeper [and] he's running the whole length of the field to tell the ref I should be sent off. He needs to be a bit more humble.''

Donovan responded to Rodgers' profanity laced tirade via Twitter: "I'm confused; who is Luke Rogers?"

mizzell, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

LD misspelling his name in the tweet is the best part imo

also on the salary tip I cannot believe that our leading forward tandem (w/ 5 league goals) together make less than half of a DM who got subbed into one game, was immediately injured and hasn't played since

no fire players in the top 50 salaries, either (castillo doesn't count)

You may have heard of him. He's short, he's white, he loves to pick a fight? Ringing any bells, Fivehead?

The Vikings ownership drops one little inkling of a hint of a notion that they might want to maybe bring MLS to the Twin Cities (possibly) if there is public financing for a new stadium (the catch) and within the week people are running with it: http://www.mls4mn.com/

Frightening, but full of facts that are difficult to argue with. (dan m), Friday, 13 May 2011 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i heard about that

i'm obv wildly in favor of an MLS team in MN, but i'm not a huge fan of the arden hills stadium plan. not for any sort of political or 'well-informed' reason, i just think far-flung stadia are stupid, esp in a city that's trying to develop a rep in canny urban development

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 13 May 2011 18:41 (twelve years ago) link

There are twin cities there, right? Two teams is the answer imo, let 'em fight it out.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 May 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link

think an MLS-only stadium would make sense here: http://bit.ly/lO6CiX

esp since the SW corridor (assuming it gets built) is going to have a stop right there. i'd imagine some of the rich jerks in lowry hill might protest and i guess it'd be weird to have a pro soccer stadium right next to the sculpture garden, but w/e. that's where i want it. or on the dome site. having pro sports teams play in the burbs is just so stupid imo

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 13 May 2011 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

There already is a lower division squad (I have friends w/ season tickets lol) but they're really far out from the city too. I admit to not knowing where the proposed development is but it's already been pretty handily proven that close-to-city-center parks are the way to go to get the soccer loving populace out in numbers. Arden Hills isn't anywhere near the light rail, is it?

Frightening, but full of facts that are difficult to argue with. (dan m), Friday, 13 May 2011 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

no, it's not. and one of the sticking points in the local debate (from what i can tell) is that it's gonna cost 175M to make the road improvements necessary to manage the traffic.

but yeah: the soccer fans are imo more likely to be city-dwellers. i'm sure they'll show up for games, even in arden hills, but i have to say that part of the fun of going to the single mls game i've seen (sounders) was the fact that the stadium was right downtown. and it seems craycray to me to develop huge sports complexes in the burbs when we've got space and infrastructure in the city proper.

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 13 May 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know what the stats are for light rail ridership when games are on (twins or vikes or wolves), but i think its decompressed the parking situation in a big way

i dunno i guess i'm just sorta depressed by the idea of a big dumb stadium going up in the middle of nowhere, with parking lot with 20k cars in it.

top 10 overpaid and underpaid in MLS

Kimura's great, my favorite full-back in the league I think. What is it with the Japanese and that position?

clever dummy (boxall), Friday, 20 May 2011 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't realize they were known for their fullbacks. Does he play for the national team ever?

He never has. I'd read that he was sure to leave Colorado for Europe or the J-League soon in order to get the national side's attention. But they already have Nagatomo and Uchida, so.
