i also really like that Cobra Dukes remix they did.

the danceability makes them so much better than what 'balearic' seems to have spun off into.

one of them is actually in lullabies in the dark. that superpitcher remix of their new single is good.

whispers is my least favorite track, and i love kathy diamond's solo record. that vocal sample is just too fucking annoying.

my fave remix is the shortwave set one because the first twenty seconds are kind of like huh, okay then it opens up and its kind of simple and certain and eazy and you can sing along, while you dance, if you want to. also its the best one to hear out.

i like all the ones ive heard tho and would really like to hear the lindstrom remix

What I love about them as original producers - the sense that on every single occasion they're consciously trying to make the most enjoyable record imaginable. And their ability to mix pop-disco and e-transcendence and that sense of wide-eyed wonder without ever really coming over as twee or cloying or annoying. Whispers is my favourite single of this year by several light years.

What I love about them as remixers - they do what JLC *used* to do, which is to really understand the point of a song and just rearrange it to make it MORE so. The Grace Jones one is a case in point. The only side alley is the Friendly Fires one which takes the song in a different direction (mostly by replacing the vocal) but still somehow manages to keep the evocative feel of the original. The Cut Copy one is possibly the only one that doesn't quite work as well possibly because the original is going for a very similar vibe.

i think these guys are great, but i find it very difficult to articulate why. it's too easy to lob "80s" in their direction or like, happy-sad disco-pop. "aeroplane"/"caramellas" is a must if you have not heard it. their second single is "pacific air race", which is not as good, but still worth checking. and "whispers" (the third single) is great, but i like the h&la rmx the best. out of the remixes i think i would list my favorites as: cobra dukes, grace jones, shortwave set, low motion disco, lullabies in the dark, allez allez. i would love to hear an aeroplane rmx of h&la or of "west end girls" where they just looped the intro synths for 10 minutes.

xp, i can't believe i forgot about coyote. um, that's somewhere near the top of my list.

They are playing at Matter on Saturday, and I can't make it. Gah. I *really* want to see them live.

producers of the year by a country mile, although dj international mag picking 'caramellas' as tune-of-the-year was a bit o_O. unlike tricky my favourite of their own tracks is 'pacific air race'. the key change has me welling up. favourite remixes are 1. low motion disco, 2. coyote and 3. grace jones. can't get into 'whispers' as much as everyone seems to have, just ain't feeling the vocal. and i have tried. the friendly fires remix is good but the justus kohncke one kills all.

Ten years since the album came out later this year.

Probably a similar amount of time since I last listened to it

Random Access Memories chat has sent me back to this album. They were only a couple of years apart but Aeroplane album feels so much longer ago. Quite a lot of similarities between the two albums though

Mountains of Moscow wouldn't feel out of place on RAM

Most of it is just plain bad though - still struggle to reconcile those early EPs and remixes to what ended up on the album. You could just about get a half decent EP out of it at best.

It really is cobblers in places. I like the idea of revitalising and recontextualising unfashionable or lesser-lauded genres, but they didn't manage to improve on them or make them any more palatable. In fact a lot of the lyrics are even worse than the kind of euro-pop and rock it's referencing

Just stopping by to say that I'm on a trial of YouTube premium and I'm going through a whole load of tracks I don't have acess to physically or on streaming services. From this recent listening I have concluded that Aeroplane - Aeroplane may be my favourite piece of music ever. Every single note in it is perfect. Find me a better snippet in music than the breakdown at 3:53 and rebuild to 5:00! That's all, have a nice day everyone

Still remember hearing the Lindstrom & Prins Thomas Essential Mix in like mid 2007 and hearing “Aeroplane” for the first time and being like “oh fuck what is this”.

This thread revival has led me to putting on "Whispers" for the first time in years and all I can say is...thank you.

I love that remix of Kimbra's 'Two Way Street' even tho it's post-peak and practically rote as anything

"whispers" and the "paris" remix are still the best music ever

"Paris" remix is one of a few songs that seems to unite everyone I know in dancing bliss when it gets played
