i think when i finally lose this game i'm going to retire from chess... it's very tiring!!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 00:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Right - I'm crashing and leaving the game on a knife edge...

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 00:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I am taking the ken agony as a sign and deleting my bookmark. I want a degree.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 00:47 (nineteen years ago) link

All this online chess has got me playing the chess game you get with osx. Only to find it beats me even easier than everyone on redhotpawn (except ken).
I just hope the experience makes me a better player.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I am a loser : (

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:51 (nineteen years ago) link

The only losers are the ones who don't play!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:20 (nineteen years ago) link

i've lost five games! i'm on a roll!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 22:59 (nineteen years ago) link

That's because you pick only the best challengers.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 23:02 (nineteen years ago) link

that's a lie, i'm not that good! only ken and greg have beaten me so far tho. chris i now challenge thee...

I am all chessed out.

All this online chess has got me playing the chess game you get with osx. Only to find it beats me even easier than everyone on redhotpawn (except ken).

But isn't the programme designed to play like a master? I mean, it beats me easier than anyone on redhotpawn, Yahoo Chess, and offline too. Not to mention that playing in real time makes things more challenging. The programme plays with my head - I think I've made a safe capture of a major rank but actually I've played a part in creating a setup that materializes 5 moves later and which ends up cutting me off from even moving.

What's a good book on strategy that's easy to follow? I took out Evans' Chess Questions Answered, which is useful, but I find its layout to not be totally user-friendly.

Tomorrow night I aim to see if chess lessons can be transferred to the kickboxing ring.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmm, I fear over-dogmatic application of 'rules' from Evans may have cost me against blueski.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Sundar does not so much have me by the balls, but rather has a pair of tweezers with which he keeps plucking ball hairs, with no warning, one by one.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:59 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm scared of you guys who are actually STUDYING this now!!

haha and just to immortalise it (before captainzep kills the streak)

WOW. You're a hero!

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Miccio's in! I didn't realize this. We'll have to face off when I'm done one of these games.

I dunno, Chris, I don't really feel like I've got anything solid at this point.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:27 (nineteen years ago) link

He's not looking so well.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 25 March 2005 09:28 (nineteen years ago) link

0 for 3!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

chris: I have no idea what is going on.
julia: is beating me.
ambrose: I will avenge my queen.
tiefschwarz: is wiley.
cathy: I have no idea what's going on.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I also have no idea what is going on.

I grow tired of Sundar having a life. I am way too interested in the outcome of this game!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:57 (nineteen years ago) link

julia put the smack down on me!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:58 (nineteen years ago) link

well played, too good.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:00 (nineteen years ago) link

yay, thanks!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:07 (nineteen years ago) link

You are all taking far too long! I am stuck in Rugby, and all I have for entertainment is chess and Michael Caine's "Not Many People Know That" Almanac of Amazing Information. Did you know that Napolean had a pathological fear of cats?

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 25 March 2005 20:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, feel free to hit me up again if you'd like.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:01 (nineteen years ago) link

I am already playing the maximum number of people, unfortunately. Did you know that Wagner composed some of his music while wearing fancy dress?

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Does it mention Satie and the lobster?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:16 (nineteen years ago) link

No, but it should. Did you know that lobsters have blue blood?

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:27 (nineteen years ago) link

did you know how to spell "napoleon"?

; )

RJG (RJG), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Did you know?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I may not be able to spell Napoleon, but I did just beat you. ; )

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 25 March 2005 22:26 (nineteen years ago) link

wait, did you?

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 26 March 2005 00:57 (nineteen years ago) link

it's napoleOn.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 26 March 2005 01:57 (nineteen years ago) link

haha! haha!

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 26 March 2005 02:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Son of a bitch! I didn't even see that coming. Oh well, lasting 49 moves is still an achievement for me.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 26 March 2005 02:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Now THAT time I saw an endgame!

That was a kick-ass game. When you moved your rook back up to H1, did you realize I could take it?

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 26 March 2005 03:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I wanted to get your knight out of the way. I was scared of that knight-pawn team at my home row. Maybe it would have been wiser at the time to move the rook closer to my queen and just trade the bishop for the knight? My biggest weakness was in letting your pawn get that close in the first place.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 26 March 2005 03:14 (nineteen years ago) link

The first move you made that I wasn't sure of was when you moved your rook down from -- wait, I was black... -- A1 to A5 when I was threating the massive triple knight fork. I thought you would move it to B1. I wasn't sure if you were being superclever, though! Also you had your knight fork waiting so you nearly escaped unscathed.

I thought it was a great game with many excellent moves (once we got past the very cautious opening). But who knows, experts might think we missed a million opportunities!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 26 March 2005 03:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Right, I see it. I think I actually missed that your bishop was protecting B4 + I was being overcautious in wanting to watch my queen's back. B1 would have made more sense in retrospect but for some reason I don't think I even thought of that.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 26 March 2005 03:26 (nineteen years ago) link
