PBR wasn't even a hipster choice when i was in college, it was considered sort of a cut above the swill they'd serve at the sleazier bars in town where the drinking age wasn't enforced (i think there was one place that was basically a rec room sans decoration and served natural light for 25 cents per small cup during happy hour and served literally nothing else.) PBR was regarded as better-tasting while still being cheap. everyone drank either that or labatt's (as a session beer) or shotgunned milwaukee's best.
