you listen to drone music

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 April 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

yes but drone repeats itself over and over and over on purpose (hence the name), not b/c it's running out of ideas :/

hey ilxor, thanks for contributing, glad you stopped by (ilxor), Monday, 4 April 2011 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

"John" (lol) is so damn lazy it's ridiculous.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Monday, 4 April 2011 19:28 (thirteen years ago) link

hey ilxor what about all those genres that are older than rap

aren't you the guy who'd be OK with Wayne rapping the phonebook? at least he's retreading a good song.

Metal Jennifer Saunders (some dude), Monday, 4 April 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago) link

That's a pretty exaggerated take on what I said. And "I'm Not a Star" >>>>

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Monday, 4 April 2011 22:07 (thirteen years ago) link

i like "john" a lot -- i did a mock up of my first quarter top 10 and wayne appears three times so i'm trying to figure out why that is

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 April 2011 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

What were the other two?

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Monday, 4 April 2011 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I still can't get over the fact that the song is called "John"

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Monday, 4 April 2011 22:17 (thirteen years ago) link

he's (obviously) still a far cry away from when he was GREAT but he seems to be rapping w/ more purpose & focus now -- that's a big vague but more specifically it seems like he's at least temporarily dropped a lot of his bad habits (i.e. laughing at his own jokes) (though not all i.e. grocery bagging, excessive "the earth is a girl" metaphors) -- also for the time being at least he's not doing gross 'pop' stuff like the i'm not a human being/young money stuff that immediately preceded his sentence -- seems like he wants to go back to street shit a bit & i dig that

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 April 2011 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

"john", "look at me now" & "hustle hard (remix)"

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 April 2011 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I wouldn't have problems with him doing a pop joint or two if they were more "Lollipop" and less "Bedrock".

I would f/w "Look at Me Now" but fuck Chris Brown.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Monday, 4 April 2011 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm kinda interested in the way he's now dropped 2 straight up rap singles (whereas w/ C3 he dropped "Lollipop" and "A Milli" simultaneously), i'm assuming he does have some shameless crossover single coming before the album drops but i have no idea whether it'll be a predictable R&B singer(or Drake)-assisted AutoTune extravaganza or something else entirely.

other than the "real G's move in silence like lasagna" slow burner I can't say he's done any rapping I care about at all post-prison, though, he has dropped some annoying tics but he's hardly back to pre-C3 level.

Metal Jennifer Saunders (some dude), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 00:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I pretty much appreciate him coming out with two rappin'-ass rap songs right away even if I think one of them sucks.

two weeks pass...

idk why people were getting all OMG about that cover which is a fairly obvious next step from tha carter iii

lex pretend, Thursday, 21 April 2011 11:01 (twelve years ago) link

It's kind of cute.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 April 2011 11:06 (twelve years ago) link

kinda feel like people on the internet now are just constantly feigning SHOCK and AMAZEMENT at totally in character album covers like Wayne's and Gaga's

it's hilarious & awesome

J0rdan S., Thursday, 21 April 2011 11:52 (twelve years ago) link

it's the exact same concept as his album cover from 2008

lex pretend, Thursday, 21 April 2011 11:58 (twelve years ago) link

It's not OMG SURPRISE but it is funny.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:00 (twelve years ago) link

It's the facial expression primarily

OTM. It's a kid, smiling. How OMG FANTASTIC is that after his previous album covers?

Future Debts Collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:15 (twelve years ago) link

fwiw i think the OMG thing is about the photoshopped present day Wayne tattoos on the face of child Wayne, but again he did that w/ the last album so it's kinda ho hum

some dude, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:43 (twelve years ago) link

The same thing can be cute and funny more than once, dudes.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:59 (twelve years ago) link

kinda feel like people on the internet now are just constantly feigning SHOCK and AMAZEMENT at totally in character album covers like Wayne's and Gaga's

Well in the case of Gaga< I think a lot of the shock comes from the fact that it looks like a bad photoshop job. But maybe bad photoshop jobs are in character for Gaga...

MarkoP, Thursday, 21 April 2011 13:00 (twelve years ago) link

oh it is cute and funny, i agree, it's just not very OMG WTF

some dude, Thursday, 21 April 2011 13:02 (twelve years ago) link

Uhhhmm, what Lex said, it looks just like its predecessor? And that is only partly why it's "p lol"? What's the other part? I must be missing out on a HUEG amount of LOLS and HILARITY here.

To make things worse, this ridiculous orgasmic gawking over this unfunny, unoriginal cover has made me completely agree with the Lex. Damnit.

Future Debts Collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 21 April 2011 18:26 (twelve years ago) link

ok shut up

flopson, Thursday, 21 April 2011 18:27 (twelve years ago) link

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Thursday, 21 April 2011 18:27 (twelve years ago) link

if only there was some sort of precedent for rappers putting little kids on their album covers that are supposed to represent them

This thread = 1,000x more entertaining that the album it's about

Raymond Cummings, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 10:48 (eleven years ago) link

nope to which j0rdan?

heiswagger (rennavate), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

i think j0rdan was saying carter 4 is a toilet. although rennavate's post seemed to misunderstanding whiney's post re: the song title "john."

as far as unworthy blockbuster rap albums go, you could do a lot worse than carter 4. it's more bland and overly familiar than outright bad.

some dude, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah. It had some songs but was mostly bland and uninspired. I don't know why everybody hates How To Love though. That's a pretty good song.

Gelados n cream (longneck), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 20:02 (eleven years ago) link

The singles are almost all better than I remember them, and there were a fair amount of them, so by that measure the album did what it set out to do

Evan R, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

Also forgot about that closing track where Bun B, Busta and Nas all kind of kill it, but Wayne never shows up and it's just as well

Evan R, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

i grew to appreciate "How To Love" over time, as much as i wanted to dismiss it outright

niels, Saturday, 29 September 2018 08:09 (five years ago) link

on first listen this is disappointing

niels, Saturday, 29 September 2018 08:17 (five years ago) link

That Kendrick verse is possibly the worst thing he's ever done, unless it was tongue-in-cheek, in which case it's only one of the 10'worst things he's ever done

nba jungboy (voodoo chili), Saturday, 29 September 2018 14:16 (five years ago) link

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 September 2018 01:29 (five years ago) link

yeah this is far from unlistenable lol

dyl, Sunday, 30 September 2018 14:23 (five years ago) link

what's with the voice, he doesn't sound like himself?

I dunno, on the collaboration with Kendrick he sounds like himself, albeit older and more weary than in his prime years back

curmudgeon, Sunday, 30 September 2018 14:47 (five years ago) link

the flow is super different on mona lisa. but i like it.

Trϵϵship, Sunday, 30 September 2018 14:49 (five years ago) link

sounds kinda like young thug which is weird bc those guys are not friends

Trϵϵship, Sunday, 30 September 2018 14:50 (five years ago) link

He varies the flow on it -- some parts sound newer but other verses seem old-school

curmudgeon, Sunday, 30 September 2018 17:36 (five years ago) link

This albums is pretty good, people. What is wrong with you? Lol

otm, even on first listen it's so much better than Tha Carter IV, which was such a letdown after III. it's been 7 years (?) since I listened to a new lil Wayne album and this is good

flappy bird, Sunday, 30 September 2018 21:57 (five years ago) link

was thinking recently how lucky we are that Wayne is still alive, how lucky he is. so many more rappers OD'ing in their 20s than in decades past

flappy bird, Sunday, 30 September 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link

yep, I had that exact same thought. It made me appreciate this even more. If you had asked me couple of years ago I would have said the chances of Wayne actually growing old w a certain sense of dignity were close to zero. But here we are.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Sunday, 30 September 2018 22:40 (five years ago) link

he's not old though

Trϵϵship, Sunday, 30 September 2018 23:26 (five years ago) link

*ageing - he was starting to sound old a few years ago. Now it's more like he has matured.

I like 'Mess' a lot. Really the whole last chunk of the record is the best part.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 14:21 (five years ago) link

totally agreed. there are 5 or 6 tracks that are completely worthless, and most of them are near the beginning

nba jungboy (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 14:24 (five years ago) link

Don't Cry is really good

flappy bird, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 17:09 (five years ago) link

niels, Saturday, 6 October 2018 10:29 (five years ago) link

“Mona Lisa” is fucking weird & unpleasant, don’t know why people like it.

Overexcited high-pitched Wayne flow is probably his worst stylistic development in the last 3 or so years.
