and i should also note that, as i type, i'm listening to, er, 6music. i never said i wasn't a hypocrite.

i dunno ... i just find something so smug and punchable and hateable about this advert. it's just so complacent and ... eew. it's like punk rock never happened, innit? :)

I think that's the general subliminal aim of Radio Cameron.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I think it's a bit insulting to Elvis's real musicians.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Who have recently been touring the world providing a live musical backing to cut-up footage of Elvis on film.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Really?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Noelly G on rhythm guitar is pretty irritating as well. He may be known for a lot of things, but guitar playing probably isn't one of them. Self-regard, however, is, hence his appearance. Do you think those who appeared on the ad that are still alive had to agree to do so? And the dead ones- did their estate have to agree?

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Or the footage copyright holders.

Yes, really (xpost).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:39 (seventeen years ago) link

They do a full show with Elvis on screen "as live." James Burton, the Sweet Inspirations, the full shebang. Bit necrophiliac to say the least.

xpost

[ring]

"eh, twat mansions here, noel speakin'."

"hello mr gallagher. would you like to appear in an advertisement that suggests you're the acme of guitar-playing (at least in the eyes of tragic BBC radio executives)?"

"d'you have to ask, y'fuckin' coont? bangin'!"

i sincerely hope the fucker didn't get PAID for the "appearance". wow.

I assume the Sugababes filmed their bit specially.

Marvin Gaye is the only one that looks wrong though. As in "not actually part of it" rather than "shouldn't be there" obviously.

xpost Doesn't Elvis actually do the band rundown by name? I guess he'd have been shocked to see how old his band was, if he could see through the cinema screen.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Seems a bit of a waste just to have Marvin on backing vocals, doesn't it? Since the BBC have gone to all the trouble of ressurecting him from the dead and all...

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 5 October 2006 11:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Presumably black artists are only allowed to be backing vocalists on Brave New Radio 2.

(is it coincidence that immediately Cameron rails about rap on the radio glorifying hoodie violence, etc., Westwood loses his Friday show in favour of indie disco?)

as Radio 2 becomes 90s Radio 1 the o.g. Radio 2 stuff will have to move into a niche on Radio 3, they've got plenty of room
