I guess there are Yelps for other cities.

Anyway there are a lot of jerks on Yelp in SF.

Yelp has been in Chicago for a while now, but it's only within the last few months that it routinely shows up among the top 5 Google results of any restaurant or retail establishment.

Yeah every time I watch Check Please! Bay Area I am reminded of how many assholes there are. It makes me very glad I have a job where I don't deal with the general public.

Who are these people who spend all their free time going to restaurants they have mediocre opinions of?

I find the nyc restaurant/bar reviews useful but you have to filter out all the people who give one-star write-ups to williamsburg bars and restaurants that just say "full of hipsters!!#%@$!"

even with all that type of junk there seems to be more "real people" honest reviews and less shills than on places like citysearch

Honey 1 BBQ is like the only legit north side barbecue spot and the reviews of it on yelp are infuriating

This place totally sucks. I have eatten BBQ Everywhere in this country and this is seriously as bad as Orlando FL suburb mall BBQ.

I went with a friend, who granted is a chef. We both ordered pulled-pork sandwiches. We were the only people in this entire place and it took at least 35 minutes to get our food. A child, seriously like 12 years old brought it out. Why is my pulled pork wrapped with fries on top in a piece of wax paper? Why is it about 5 inches wide? For that matter, why is it just cooked pork, with a squirt of BBQ sauce on top?

Gross.

These two TINY sandwiches and soda cost almost 25 bucks?!?

Do yourself a favor and walk seriously, 3 blocks down to Fat Willy's which is awesome. Or even head or to Calvin's a few blocks over on Armitage.

ha, from a YELP review of a gigantic local bookstore written by an ilxor!:

Some weird things about JB:
1. The (men's) bathroom. The urinals aren't private at all. I used to get the creeps there when I was younger.
2. They put Jeff Buckley in the folk section.
3. I stole a dungeons and dragons book from there once. I think they need better security.

OTM!

nickalicious, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 17:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm doing a BBQ tour of Chicago right now. So far we've done Fat Willy's (excellent), Smoque (also excellent), Merle's in Evanston (good), and Honey 1 (so-so.) Honey 1 is at the bottom of the pack because, unlike pretty much every other place on here, it didn't really leave us blown away. It was good, but not great 'cue. We really liked the family running the place, though. They were really friendly and helpful. The place seemed to be doing well too. Their dining room was pretty full at 8:00 on a Wednesday night.

lol @ putting merles in evanston above honey 1

jaymc, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 18:00 (sixteen years ago) link

i love heckys but its also a personal thing, he was huge in the community everyone knows him here. his sauce is fantastic, i always keep a jar, but hes not doing 'authentic'-style bbq and in the grand scheme heckys is near the top of mid-tier bbq joints

deej, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 18:01 (sixteen years ago) link

oh and im referring to evanston heckys btw, the heckys near cabrini is terrible and not actually run by hecky, some dude just licensed the name and logo

i don't know what the best thread for this would be, but i was reading about local sausagemakers and i ran across a gem of a review - on Google, not Yelp. it was by someone who knows enough about writing to put in a first sentence that grabs the reader, in this case:

"As I’m picking bullet fragments out of my teeth, not for the first time, from the deer sausage I didn’t want, I thought I would post this review."

that's exceptionally good writing for an internet review of a local german butcher, and i appreciate it.

I searched google today for bars that are open in the morning (take this as the given, don't judge me)

First two results were from yelp, with phrases that would seem to match my query exactly.

But, because I wasn't born yesterday, I knew not to even click those links, because I'd get a long list of bars that in fact do not have morning hours. I'm sure you know what I mean.

How is this allowed to happen? It'd be one thing if google owned yelp

"Typical, in many ways, of a mainstream hotel restaurant. Caramelized apple salad had apples which were not caramelized, but sautéed. Sweet potato fried were the best I think I've ever had, but they were finished with so much salt I had to scrape off each one before eating. The menu looks promising, but the chef is unskilled, or lazy. A friendly dining room manager exercised no quality control of food coming out of the kitchen. The bartender who served me was attentive, but presented as troubled, or sad."
