I have a terrible allergy to the word 'cheese' when it's applied to music. Bloody Oxford *mutter* *grumble*.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 12:11 (nineteen years ago) link

miss kittin is pretty dull.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 12:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I have a terrible allergy to the word 'cheese' when it's applied to music. Bloody Oxford *mutter* *grumble*.

i couldn't think of a better way of saying it...they've usually just got chart stuff (i'm sure ciara will be on heavy rotation) as well as stuff i've heard on the radio back in detroit but not so much on pop radio here.

ah! bar rumba, i think that's what it's called. tuesdays or wednesdays, i think.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 12:26 (nineteen years ago) link

miss kittin was great when we saw her! it might have been the shaved head though.

i think we should all ruin our fridays for the sake of kittin and mayer. the thought of me lecturing on 4 hours sleep is pretty amusing, anyway. and cis, couldn't you just write that essay now, or something? i never was very good at the whole essay crisis thing.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:05 (nineteen years ago) link

i want to be in Toby's class

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:20 (nineteen years ago) link

the last time i saw her, i remember her mainly playing a lot of big-room techno. i didn't particularly want to be there to begin with, though, so that might have colored my view of the whole thing.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I've never seen Miss Kittin, I love her purely on the basis of her records, especially I Com which I am in love with.

if only Cis was writing essays for Toby, then that would resolve itself.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:47 (nineteen years ago) link

This thread is such A Good Thing.

"I mean R&B like uhhh I guess chart R&B. plus maybe a little hip-hop. OR stuff like the Supremes. any R&B really! any place where they play Ciara, too.
-- The Lex"

People may scoff, but Popstarz is totally where you should go. The bottom floor is sticky, but it plays all the above. And then you can escape to Pop heaven on the top floor, make out with someone on the balcony and then dance to schmindie on the middle floor when you're so drunk you don't care that they're playing Razorlight.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Marianna not even I will ever be that drunk!

I have been warned off Popstarz as a Place Of Indie, though if there are non-indie nights then it will be promising...

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

what happens at the Scala on Saturday night these days? i remember it was Cookies & Cream (urban/hip-pop) for a while but no more i presume

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Popstarz is kind of weird - they insist on having the indie room in the main bit despite the fact that it is always half empty because all the punters are upstairs for the proper hi-nrg gay disco which is, naturally, a quarter of the size and absolutely rammed.

And that little room off to the side where I saw all those big blokes grinding together to Beenie Man. That was weird.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:14 (nineteen years ago) link

oh man I want to grind against big men to Beenie Man!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Also I just saw the words 'the Rex is ON!' and got all excited thinking you were talking about Rex The Dog. Damn you.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

OK I've just found out that my prior arrangement tonight (the Plan B night) is actually just around the corner from Plastic People! and to be perfectly honest Mayer and Kittin will be much more fun. I may show my face at the Spitz, then hotfoot it over to PP - I worry about the ltd tickets on the door selling out though.

is anyone else definitely going?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 February 2005 10:41 (nineteen years ago) link

i'd like to see Mayer but don't think i can do this really due to enormous list of things to do that will only increase in size further if i go clubbin' on a schoolnight, sob

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 10:45 (nineteen years ago) link

i want to go tonight but i can't because i'm ill.

tiefschwarz on march 12th and get physical in april are definitely in the diary tho.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 17 February 2005 10:52 (nineteen years ago) link

*BAMF* Did someone mention dancing?

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:13 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm undecided about this eve, but leaning towards not going, i think.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Rex The Dog should be playing around town a bit over the next few months. Keep an eye on Plastic People...

More aceness coming up, unfortuantly on the same bloody night:

Sat 26th Feb, Fabric - bPitch Control room: Ellen Allien, Tomas Andersson, Sylvie Marks, Smash TV. Steve Bug, Rub n Tug & Idjut Boys in other rooms.

Sat 26th Feb, Koko (ex Camden Palace) - Output Records Party: Tiga, 2 Many DJ's, Blackstrobe, Headman, Trevor Jackson.

MattR (MattR), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:29 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost - yes, i'd love some r&b dancing. whatever patience i had for techno has pretty much vanished.

Miss L speaks for me - I need to rock to hip hop and r&b again, and good old pop for that matter, 'cause I'm too burned on this electro house guff now. I'll do Annie, Tiefschwarz, Rex, and Get Physical, but beyond that...Truth is, I may have actually had more fun at Club Seal than Vitalic (Psycho Pab excepted). I still want to go to Trash at least once.

Oh, and I have plans tonight, so no go.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:30 (nineteen years ago) link

i've gone the other way from Lauren and Barima and lately enjoy dancing to/hearing out electro/techno more than I have for some time.

I haven't been to an urban (i'm just gonna keep using that term because i prefer it to anything else) night since Fez Club in Putney ages ago which was actually really good, even when they played Fatman Scoop for the second time...

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:38 (nineteen years ago) link

You mentalists aren't going to see Miss Kittin?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:41 (nineteen years ago) link

if it was a live set i would!

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I mean, just go smooch on her at least. Give her one for me!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:46 (nineteen years ago) link

i've gone the other way from Lauren and Barima and lately enjoy dancing to/hearing out electro/techno more than I have for some time.

You just stay outta our way then, bitch.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Roxy, I would so kiss Caroline if I was going :-(.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm still contemplating the Kittin. dunno. I fear a) tickets running out by the time I haul my disorganised ass over to Plastic People, and b) ruin tomorrow.

For those wanting to POP, I reiterate: Girls Aloud at GAY on Saturday!

Bah to the Feb 26 goodness, it is a friend's birthday then.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Alex, be real, you know there's no way I'm going to see Girls Aloud.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:50 (nineteen years ago) link

i'll miss the 26th stuff too as i will be in Svenska

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:02 (nineteen years ago) link

But I thought we were going to Sweden that weekend!

alix (alix), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:04 (nineteen years ago) link

for sure...

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I was gonna comment on The Popstarz Debate but then I realised that I like and dislike club nights entirely on the basis of whether or not they let me in when I was underage, which is kinda useless to, y'know, adults.

I wish I could see Girls Aloud or Miss Kittin.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Truth is, I may have actually had more fun at Club Seal than Vitalic

Flattered and all, but you are a mentalist. The Output night on the 26th looks pretty fantastic. Is this a proper Black Strobe decksnfx thing?

Also, am I the only person who finds rebranding the Camden Palace as 'Koko' utterly hilarious?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:33 (nineteen years ago) link

come and see Girls Aloud, Greg and Barima! there are no reasons for you not to.

It's looking less and less likely that I will be chez Kittin tonight :(

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Girls Aloud? Holy fuck I wish I were in London this week. :(

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Man, I'd love to see Girls Aloud on Saturday. But I've already said I'm going to see The Schla La Las who are, like, the indie Girls Alound or something.

Kate Kept Me Alive! (kate), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I've been overdoing the social which is why although I am TEMPTED I shall be good and STAY IN until Club Pfffft.

(Probably)

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:52 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm even a bit tempted by one of these oldskool rave nights sometimes

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Well to be fair the GA'll probably be a five-song PA or something. But Ria and I are treating it as an hors d'oeuvre for the MAIN TOUR in May!

I think I may have to skip Club FT this month. but when can I DJ at it?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Lex are you going to the GA gig in Hammersmith in May? i can't wait!

Steve - Lukey of this parish swears by Raindance. I've not been tempted yet.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:58 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah but we've got tickets for May 29 whereas everyone else seems to have them for the 28th :(

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I am also a bit tempted by an oldskool rave thing.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:59 (nineteen years ago) link

If any of you fancy a trip to Dublin, Black Strobe March 16th, at our club, and Optimo sometime in April, I think.

I was half thinking of trying to organise some friends to organise a party next time I'm in London, cos I want to DJ now, everywhere and anywhere!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:01 (nineteen years ago) link

I am also a bit tempted by an oldskool rave thing.

do such things exist?! I have been awaiting the early 90s rave revival for YEARS!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:14 (nineteen years ago) link

they've existed for some time now. Camden Palace actually did one of the bigger ones for ages featuring Ratpack live etc. regularly.

think there was something at The Arches a few weeks back too, old skool vs new skool breaks sort of thing.

Butlins are doing some big 90s revival thing at their camps where the likes of Baby D play as well as a lot of rub pop stuff. madness...

i want to go to Dublin, and Black Strobe would be a good excuse, but it might be too soon i'll see...

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Lex I have at least two great reasons for not seeing the G.A.! They are FINALS and POVERTY.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:26 (nineteen years ago) link

My friend has been to a couple of places selling themselves as "old school rave" but has reported back that they are really actually rub, so I'd be careful about which venue you choose. Alternatively just HAVE A FOOKIN' HOUSE PARTY with "Rave Nation 92".

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:43 (nineteen years ago) link

dont forget back to yours at herbal with martin landsky on feb 26th

its a good night, the resident, margeret dygas is a wicked dj

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

that 26/2 output thing looks fantastic; unfortunately we'll be in france then, though.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Just a little bit of spam, but I will be dancing and also DJing at a night I run with friends in Dalston tonight from 9-3. We have Neville Watson guest DJing for us who is absolutely going to smash it, the space is very intimate, and we are also putting it on for FREE simply because we like to throw a good party, so no excuses really. https://www.facebook.com/events/257377207746381/?fref=ts

Hadn't really been out dancing in a while until this weekend. I think my tolerance for London nights is waning. It's the same problems of the last few years really - crap temporary venues, lack of organisation, but most of all the people. Why charge around the dance floor back and forth pushing people? Why get so out of it you can't stand up so fall into other dancers? If your friend does this you have a duty to help them. I had a good night at Netil House on Saturday but that was really due to being with good friends and Sonja Moonear's set. Fantastic DJ. Would definitely go out more often if there weren't these issues.

mmmm, Monday, 3 February 2014 14:05 (ten years ago) link

Come and try our night on the 22nd in Dalston. We only have a tiny sweatbox venue which holds 50, and only an OK soundsystem, but we keep it free, have a great atmosphere, friendly crowd (mostly mates, word of mouth and some posts in select places) and most importantly great tunes. OK, that last part can be subjective, so here’s a mix by another of the residents: https://soundcloud.com/frank_mitchell/demented-but-determined.

Event page here, https://www.facebook.com/events/1408677899370795/?fref=ts . Yes I am going to hell for spamming ILX.

was thinking fur coat & no artificial colours might be good but i've never been to the nest

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:45 (nine years ago) link

The Nest is a bit of a hellhole tbh. Started off kinda interesting but then they went all out with their trashy Dalstonite aesthetic.

The Hydra's schedule for the rest of the year is pretty impressive - http://the-hydra.net/#events - though tbh I think I've lost the taste for big name events.

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:34 (nine years ago) link

Hehe, my friend DJs at The Nest, I’ve never been though. We have Mark Forshaw playing for us in the basement of Olive, N16 7PL, near the 24 hour bagel place. 9-3am Free Entry. I’m going to be playing a very slow warm-up set from 9.

London makes life very difficult, a reasonable venue pops up once in a while but its usually only a matter of time before its stopped. There's a good space on one of the side streets off Mare St but its already had quite a good innings so I dont know how much longer it has
