Bad idea, Ark.
They just removed the original video from youtube and closed that account.
I assume they're upgrading or something, but that was a piece of internet history!
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 23:24 (thirteen years ago) link
I mean, unless they worked out a deal with youtube to transfer viewership stats over to the video whenever it gets reposted, I feel like one of Ark's greatest achievements has just been vaporized. We'll never know how many views the original video would've gotten.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 23:31 (thirteen years ago) link
Plus, thousands of youtube links/embeds just went dead and useless.
Fuck you, Ark.

did anyone mention that "Friday" debuted at #72 on the real Billboard Hot 100 this week? last week it placed on Billboard's digital chart, but it didn't seem real back then, it seemed like a dream.
also sometime tonight it beat "Chocolate Rain"s view count. a part of me wants to cheer her on, but another part of me feels so bad for Tay Zonday. in the modern era, I bet he would've ripped that shit up on the pop charts.

Raised in Africa by a minister mother and a chemical engineer father, Wilson sang in his mother's church as a child and helped out with youth programs at the local Christian school. Later, he says, he attended medical school in Europe and trained in track and field events for the 2000 Olympics. But he dropped it all in pursuit of his music, an endeavor that would lead him to tour as a backup singer with Eastern European pop star Ibrahim Maiga, to study the business side of entertainment at Whitman College in Walla Walla, and, finally, to come to Hollywood.“If you're going to try to make a dream in music happen, Los Angeles is where you need to be,” he says. “If your music is heard in America, it will be heard everywhere.”

yup. i thought it would be a one-week wonder chart-wise, but actually the song is likely to go even higher on the hot 100 this week. the song made another rapid ascent up the itunes sales charts this past friday and actually peaked higher than it had the previous week. i'm not sure whether the surge in sales had more to do with the recent tv promotion (jay leno and such) or simply the fact that it was friday, lol
― teledyldonix, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 04:36 (thirteen years ago) link
It's at #62 on the UK chart at the moment.

Only played it twice so far, but I'm finding "Friday" pretty catchy in an annoying sort of way. I'll definitely give it a third listen, at least, and maybe more depending how my opinion evolves.
(And yeah, I like "Gang Fight" better too.)

New song LOL is in a similar vein, with the chorus, "BFF you make me LOL", meaning best friend forever you make me laugh out loud.

according to a Billboard article linked upthread "Friday" got virtually no radio spins (12, to be exact) the first week it sold a ton of downloads, don't know if that changed at all in the past week: Top 100 moments in Rebecca Black's "Friday" music video
― some dude, Thursday, 31 March 2011 03:26 (thirteen years ago) link
I bet it's getting play at least on morning-zoo shows, for lols.
― discursive gatorade (Eazy), Thursday, 31 March 2011 04:43 (thirteen years ago) link
I think those 12 spins are referring to the entire song getting played without annoying radio dudes laughing over it.

Friday's much-mocked lyrics include the teenage dilemma of where to sit in a convertible car with your friends on the drive to school.
No, that's what the video is about.. The lyrics are about the schoolbus.

You know, for a long time I thought BFF was some sort of acronym for "Friend with Benefits"
You can imagine what I thought Paris Hilton's eventual prize on offer was for that TV show.
