white town

i quite dug a lot of his early 45s with the inserts about how he was always getting dumped by the chix

I may have to go with Primitive Radio Gods here. A self-conscious and forced stab at capturing the postcollegiate GenX zeitgeist that kinda actually managed to capture the postcollegiate GenX zeitgeist for a week or two in Los Angeles.

Weighing up just the one hit from each against each other, PRG by a mile. 'Your Woman' was annoying.

This poll didn't close yet?

actually like both these okay. white town is a better album, prg had the better single. am i imagining a small but enthusiastic ilm re-evaluation of white town a few years ago?

I'm, voting only taking account of the singles. One hit wonders... gotta go for PRG.

I love 'Your Woman' *BUT* what is it about??? Are you a man/woman/transsexual?

Ummmm...well, that's a toughie. When I wrote it, I was trying to write a catchy pop song that had more than one perspective. Although it's written in the first person that viewpoint isn't the same as it may
sound. So, these are *some* of the things it's about:
Being a member of an orthodox Trotskyist / Marxist movement (as I was for three years in the 80s).
Being a straight guy in love with a lesbian (ditto).
Being a gay guy in love with a straight man.
Being a straight girl in love with a lying, two-timing, fake-ass Marxist.

White Town. Not only b/c the song is a stone cold classic, but b/c it pulled the neat trick of being a quasi-gay New Wave throwback which got regular airplay on mainstream rock FM stations in the late-90s. PRG song is nice too, but it could never be my woman.

^^ this.

I'd always flip the station when the PRG single came on. meh.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 08:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I’ve always loved that White Town tune.

Bands that are dudes in bedrooms making new hits from previously recorded material IN THE 90s!

By this definition, shouldn't you include Moby too?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I've never heard the other group, but I love "Your Woman" (both the gender play in the lyrics and the actual tune), so I gotta go for White Town.

I've heard "Your Woman" a few times recently at the bar, seems to be a budding jukebox fave.

geoffreyess, Sunday, 10 June 2018 22:21 (five years ago) link

That song does feel ahead-of-its-time in my mind’s ear (haven’t actually heard it in years).

I love both songs and fuck it I commented on this thread 10 years ago. I feel like an ilm fossil.

Ever get that “final scene of Seinfeld” feeling — “I think we’ve had this conversation before...”?

That link to his faq on his website is interesting if you want to read on the gear he used and other info on the song.
