I <3 Nardwuar. Our bands used to gig together in the mid-90s. He's a total sweetheart, and some of his interviews have left me in tears.

If you haven't heard this week's Nardwuar/WFMU podcast, I can't recommend it enough. After half an hour of badgering Ian MacKaye - mostly about a Fugazi show from 1991 - Ian finally snaps and gently but devastatingly punctures Nardwuar's whole persona, playing the part of a kindly uncle who can't stand to see you act foolish in public anymore. It actually left me a little shaken....The most amazing thing is Nardwuar DOES NOT GET IT. It truly is like screaming at a wall.

Wouldn't acknowledging Ian's criticism require breaking persona?

Maybe the reason for Ian's annoyance is that he's had to endure the schtick for four or five interviews. By now he may have been hoping for a much deeper conversation. Nardwuar gets his best reactions when the musician is thrown off guard by his knowledge and generosity.

Wow, in 20 years of listening to Nardwuar I have never heard an interviewee give him as severe a dressing down as that.

Said it before but..."Nardwuar" is not a persona. He's a real person who behaves and talks like that all the time.

If that's the case why was Mackaye so disappointed that his friend (as he repeatedly called him) disappeared when the recorder went on?

eh, that wasn't that bad. nardwuar interviews obviously more fun when he's interviewing someone who has a sense of humor. or a stoned rapper. ian didn't "snap". he just wants everyone to be plain like the amish.

listening to them i feel like they both are characters you couldn't imagine being like that 24/7, but they probably are!
for some reason, i could easily imagine snoop being like that 24/7.

When I saw Fugazi all the house lights were put on for their set, Mackaye seemed self-consciously unsure about whether this was he right thing to do or not.... yawn
