Don't snooze on the side projects!

busted p (electricsound), Saturday, 30 April 2011 01:13 (thirteen years ago) link

As mentioned upthread Steve Moore's "Primitive Neural Pathways" is fantastic; groovy artwork too:

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSMIV5JogCpJe5HIPJ9ES3BwGQG_8hD6iwmYl99SYZkkxnVEjKDyg

As was also mentioned upthread, the Miracle album is terrible altogether.

Any newer sideproject releases? I'm not so good at keeping track.

Loved the Majeure remixes. Gonna get on that split album now.

All these things are on Spotify, excellent! Gonna check out Gianni Rossi and Majeure now...

Lidl Monsters (seandalai), Saturday, 30 April 2011 13:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Was hoping that Miracle would be good, but so far it's dreadful...the vocals are ugh. Much love for Majeure. Also if no one's checked out the new Maserati, Pattera's influence looms pretty heavily on it compared to previous outings.

― mizzell, Friday, May 13, 2011 10:26 AM (3 days ago)

No kidding. Sometimes I prefer and enjoy Steve Moore's solo stuff more so than him working with his partner. This new 12" is solid gold.

Gonna have to check that one out...I'm enjoying Escape Velocity quite a bit at the moment but I wouldn't say it's much of a progression from Spirit Animal.

Fear Moldova and the Nation of Leaners (seandalai), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:05 (twelve years ago) link

Just picked up Escape Velocity at lunch break and eager to drop the needle when I get home.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:57 (twelve years ago) link

I'm enjoying this but I gotta say, anyone who's really tripping balls over this one really needs to do themselves a favour and check out Jean-Michel Jarre's Magnetic Fields, which this occasionally seems a pretty direct rip of.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 02:03 (twelve years ago) link

Escape Velocity is the first/only Zombi album I've heard that occasionally makes me think of EBM synth sequences, especially DAF (maybe it's the four-on-the-floor/dance emphasis on this one).

Craig, forgive me- is that a particular synth or a musician?

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 02:30 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, sorry--DAF, the German band signed to Mute in the early '80s (here's a stream of their third album, from the particular period I was nodding to):

Yeah, Spirit Animal's a keeper. Just one run through of this one--sounds good so far. Side 2 sounds like it could have been called Majeure though. did they always split the songwriting on previous releases?

Fear Moldova and the Nation of Leaners (seandalai), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 17:13 (twelve years ago) link

nice review ned! i was thinking the same thing about the drums. when someone upthread mentioned it was a JMJ rip, i was gonna reply 'but THE DRUMS! THEY HIT SO HARD!!'

printf (diamonddave85), Friday, 20 May 2011 21:32 (twelve years ago) link

as a side note, can anyone suggest some kraut with heavy hitting motorik?

printf (diamonddave85), Friday, 20 May 2011 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

the drums on this really don't work for me, they seem too detached from the synths and it all sounds a bit disjointed. Same as a lot of Spirit Animal and the Maserati split.. i think maybe the drumming is just not quite as intuitive as it was on Surface to Air, when it really seemed like he was feeling the rhythms

it's a shame, cos when they drop the drums on Shrunken Heads it lets the piece really breathe, so you can get lost in that ebb and flow they do so well. One of my favourites of the year that track

merked, Friday, 20 May 2011 21:46 (twelve years ago) link

"Shrunken Heads" is a great track--tempted to attempt to play it alongside "Time Warp" by Eddy Grant in a DJ set...

Steve Moore just remixed a track of mine for release in the fall. So honored and psyched. It's gorgeous.

Wow, cool... Keep us posted! Steve Moore just started selling a 2xCD issue of Primative Neural Pathways and another OOP 12" - looks great, but it's $16, which is a bit steep for me at the moment.

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

sounds tight. LOOVE PNP, more than the new Zombi actually, though I'd hate to choose.
