the notion of "I love [genre]" boards is really stupid imo, I have no idea if somebody's actually proposing such a thing but on ILM phases come and go where this or that genre is "trending" or whatever

is there a "hide board" option somewhere in preferences 'cause I wanna make sure I don't actually post to this board, because I really vociferously-yet-in-good-humor oppose this board

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Saturday, 19 March 2011 16:12 (thirteen years ago) link

But the question isn't about whether people are interested in the types of thread - just because people might want a rolling doom thread doesn't mean they want or need a dedicated metal board. That's the only thing measuring number of posts will tell you, listening to people's opinions in places such as here will give you a better idea of how popular the board concept actually is.

the thing is is that most of the metal board posters have already had this discussion and said "no, that's silly & there is no need to take our kind of music and separate it from the broader category of music," so it's a little "well, we're trying it anyway, never mind that we already had this discussion" to just go ahead and do it - and now, people have to go to extra lengths to not post to threads they might be interested in so as to avoid offering support to I Love Metal, which (and this is not! not!! OMG HOW HORRIBLE, I'm just discussing bcz this is a discussion borad OK) is kind of "in order to not have this thing you said you didn't want, you're going to have to stop using Site New Answers or go fix your prefs." Which to me it seems like the people who wanted the board had the opportunity to make their case, didn't, and went ahead and just put it in anyway.

It's not actually a big deal though let me be clear about that lest anybody say "you are makin a big deal!" ok!

i am kinda of the try it and see if it works mind wrt new boards, so this is pretty much my fault, so sorry for shaking shit up - there have been some peeps that have approached me about not feeling comfortable on the rolling thread because its super promo oriented and for the non-journos i can see where that would be kinda a high bar for contribution so i figured what the hell. this board is def not written in stone, and if i dont get on this thread to respond much today im not ignoring yall, i am at work.

broke my o_O face o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 19 March 2011 16:27 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah tbh I'm totally cool with it as long as it doesn't mean "if you start a metal thread on ILM it will be moved to I Love Metal" - if all the metal posters go "yeah, prefer new board" then I'm sure I can adjust tbh

we talked about this then, i just fail to see why ppl don't start new threads about specific bands or whatever if they don't want to double back to something on the rolling thread

call all destroyer, Saturday, 19 March 2011 16:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I totally get the appeal of rolling threads but they shouldn't exist to the exclusion of threads about specific bands/records.

Also, it may well be just me, but I actively prefer being a bit 'damn, there are too many threads on subject x' to removing all trace of subject x from a generalist music board. I enjoyed the metal poll, I occasionally pop in to other trü kvlt threads to have a look at what you're talking about, but quite frequently I ignore metal threads. So how is a separate board going to help me? I'm not going to shut it off, nor am I going to be encouraged to participate. I'll just see even more metal threads appearing. Which you could do as part of a wider community instead of being all sectarian. But, you know, if (for example) goons are pissed off about threads on music they don't like appearing on ILM, they should move somewhere that is a specialist board. And in return, if metallers are gonna whinge about goon threads being all over the place, they shouldn't form a hostile annexe, but just bugger off completely.

skipped a lot of msgs here but basically if u dont listen to metal or w/e how could this possibly affect u, also probably stfu about it? the rolling metal thread really isnt the same as autogoon etc, ie 7 dudes talking about w/e its like 700 guys posting about what promo cds they got and it sucked, it needed to be split, dont really see HOW PEOPLE ARE POSSIBLY AFFECTED AT ALL by threads that they do not read? something i've enevr understood about ilx, but then again i don't look at ILM or SNA all day, i just look at whatever threads i like

like wtf is wrong with yall that dont do this

my solution to the rolling-every-subgenre thread is: I'll post to rolling metal. if there's a band that warrants its own thread, I'll post to that or start it. if some subgenre thread has some sort of special reason to be blowing up (like if Gorgoroth made another masterpiece like Ad Majorem I can see the black metal thread getting pretty lit up) then I can imagine posting to it but otherwise I don't see the point, it seems like trainspotting to me and I am not into that shit. I don't vigorously oppose subgenre threads but I do think they're pointless, rolling metal is fun & has flow whereas separate-bin-for-everything just does not interest me in the slightest. this is the internet and it's 2011, "things move fast" is actually OK by me
