I saw Lou and Jason a couple of years ago in Holland, during a reunion tour or something. One of the worst shows I've ever seen. In between the first few songs, Lou drank a whole bottle of red wine, and got drunk immediately. It was so embarrassing to look at that I didn't listen to their albums for a few years.
But despite that ugly memory I have to say CLASSIC.

My experience was in Holland also, but years before. Wine-experience seems pretty much the same though ;-) (there were two or three already openend bottles standing ready at Lou's disposal if memory serves me right)

I haven't heard a note after Bubble & Scrape, but up to then it was all amazing (B&S itself is patchy). III is one of my desert island discs.

i listened to smash your head on the punk rock and b & s a while ago to see if i could still like them and as it turns out, the eric songs are the ones i continue to enjoy (i'm the kindest drifter you'll ever hate, and i'll cook for you and i'll clean my plate! >>>>> it's all a matter of soul and fire) and the lou songs sounded UNBEARABLY feelingsy. the loewenstein songs were relatively neutral and fine. I had friends who would complain about the noisy songs interrupting their sweet sweet lou songs, and i guess they finally got what they wanted. does the reunited sebadoh have a gaffney?

He was back for earlier reunion things, but he's since left again.

dont think so. he left again afaik

Sebadoh ended for me when Gaffney left. If Lou was the heart, Gaffney was the spastic colon that kept you on your toes.

real talk!!
― nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:39 (eleven years ago) link
i thought of him more as the more interesting person -- all lou can do is talk about his boring emotional FEELINGS. i don't want to hang around with a heart. wkiw loewenstein though.

And that line-up was AMAZING live. Switched instruments every few songs, so you got rotating mini sets of Lou, Jason & Eric tunes, with the singer almost always on guitar. Plus they were really loose in the way only a very close band can be. They seemed to enjoy playing with each other so much the audience couldn't help but feed off it too.

If I want to hear someone sing about their feelings I'll take "I'm scared of dying, don't let me die" over everything Barlow ever wrote any day. xpost

I'm stoked for this, maybe not my ideal line-up, but I'll take these new tunes.

given how things went down with Dino Jr. back in the day and how Lou felt about it i always thought it was odd for him to carry on w/ both Sebadoh and Folk Implosion without the people who started those bands with him

Haven't heard these guys in a long time but was in a normally bustling cafe that was strangely empty due to the holidays and Bob Weston's production on "Brand New Love" (the Smash Your Head version) is pretty wild... That's some pretty nice tight mic-ing.

i'm listening to the new archival Deluxx Folk Implosion record with Bob! It's sooooo awesome! a whole album of great stuff that never came out from the sessions that the 7-inch came from. every sebadoh fan needs this for real.

Geez that record is 20? I saw them when it came out opening for the Flaming Lips, and even back then Lou was lamenting that everybody hated the record.

I never saw sebadoh perform. Was at a show but lou jumped off the stage and walked out before performing. I remember walking home from that show and just smiling. Lol
― nathom, Saturday, 2 March 2019 12:51 (five years ago) link
I saw them a few times, but the best (by far) was in the mid-2000s — just Lou & Jason, plus a tape recorder with drum tracks for some songs. They were excellent, the crowd was way into it... it was just “one of those shows.” (I remember a tough-looking guy with a ponytail standing next to me, looking up at the stage and shouting along to every word of one of the songs from “Oven Is My Friend.”)

Btw — that new song isn’t bad (just watched the video). I found some of the my-side-of-the-story divorced-dad content of Defend Yourself to be a little cringeworthy (think I actually preferred Jason’s songs on that one); but I’m always up for a new Sebadoh LP, no matter how corny Lou’s soul-bearing may become with age.

So what do y'all think of Act Surprised? I think it's good, though the sound's a little muddy, and Lou's lyrics are somewhat cringe-y (as they tend to be lately).

Saw Lou on his recent solo tour and it was a dream come true for a mega-fan like me. Nearly 3 hours of requests in a yoga studio to a knowledgeable crowd of 25. Have only heard the 2 singles from Act Surprised and it's not for me. I wish them boundless success though. Would love to hear others' thoughts on the album.
