she tweeted about it (i'm still not 100% sure the account is actually her but it was datestamped way before she was at all known)

Yeah I remember the tweet but I'm almost wondering if that was some weird joke.

sadly yes, because I am terrible at throwing things away

i can't believe anyone would have a problem with people spending 2 grand for something like this. they might have sprung for some singing lessons though. anyway, great return on investment! she's set for college. fuck a tutor.
― scott seward, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:31 (thirteen years ago) link
lol things I would spend 2k on for my musically-inclined child: singing lessons, piano lessons, violin lessons, dancing lessons, idk, tapdancing lessons!

I do like how we are all of a sudden wholeheartedly supporting this company that we previously painted as a fly-by-night huckster operation designed to scam rich LA families out of thousands of dollars.
― dayo, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:33 (thirteen years ago) link
now they can afford to give her any lessons she wants!
― scott seward, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:34 (thirteen years ago) link
I find it hard to believe they weren't already spending money on singing and acting lessons if they were willing to spend money on this

we didn't know how much ark charged before. we thought it was a rich kid scam or something. 2 grand is doable for people who aren't rich. i actually thought it was probably more like 50 grand or some crazy number like that for the whole star treatment package.

I still think the 2k number is pretty fishy, there's definitely some book cooking going on.

they've obviously hacks but if that is at all a realistic figure it's fair to say they're impressively cost-effective hacks!
― some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah for real. i mean parents spend all kinds of crazy money on their kids for stuff that has no future benefit or whatever.
― scott seward, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:37 (thirteen years ago) link
one thing needs to be outlined again and again: none of these people could have had ANY idea that this was going to happen. no way in hell.
― scott seward, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:38 (thirteen years ago) link
er, underlined.
And, for instance: the cast were actually friends and acquaintances, yeah? And maybe the whole thing was some sort of fun/crazy day out for them, rather than scale pay or whatever.
Exactly!
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:39 (thirteen years ago) link
well, yeah! that's why I'm eye-rolly at people who are claiming that this was a good gamble, because it wasn't really a gamble in the first place! xps

in the first 3 weeks this video was on YouTube with just a few thousand hits i imagine lots of kids at RB's school knew about it and weren't all hoisting her on their shoulders and cheering her on. kids with showbiz ambitions don't tend to get treated with a ton of respect at school.

no thank you, USA Today
Btw, the tweet about the airport said "my family" not "my parents" -- could be extended relatives maybe? (Context suggested that the airport was in Colorado Springs.)

generally speaking, most people say "my uncle" or "my grandfather" if they mean someone in the extended family
at least, that's what I would say, and I am the template for America, so

Colorado Springs has a couple airports... the Air Force Academy is located right there. + it's just a generally wealthy town... didn't immediately recognize it from the video, tho.

xpost -- Those chinchillas REALLY need urgent care.
Back a few posts -- no indeed, it wasn't a gamble at all, it was this indulgence combined with a 'why not?' approach -- like Dan said, she's "someone who was trying out something she really wanted to pursue." When I was 13, it was 1984 and videos and pop were the center of EVERYTHING for me and I can't imagine that this is any less so for her in a different context. Had I been someone in that circumstance and I had enough talent to do a little something and reasonable self-confidence to go with it, parents who were both indulgent and a little practical as well who had been approached by this bunch of, indeed, cost-effective hacks who make a business out of such a vanity-press approach, I would have gone for it.
