The OC Register interview says that by paying what they did she and her family kept the rights to the song, and that the money from sales generated is going to a combination of her savings, her school theater program and donations for Japan. As far as I'm concerned, let this thing be a legit hit!

Damn she played that one right.

Purchased on iTunes. (I think I missed that iTunes files are now 256 kbps and DRM-free.)

Joseph Beuys II Men (jaymc), Friday, 18 March 2011 12:49 (thirteen years ago) link

how many have sold on itunes?

iatee, Friday, 18 March 2011 12:50 (thirteen years ago) link

right now GMA is featuring a performance by the cast of the Disney Channel's Shake It Up and the margin of quality between this song and "Friday" is not especially huge

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 12:52 (thirteen years ago) link

xp They don't release the actual sales figures, but the song is now #31 on the iTunes top sellers chart.

Joseph Beuys II Men (jaymc), Friday, 18 March 2011 12:53 (thirteen years ago) link

For perspective, though: Katy Perry's "E.T." is #1 on Billboard's Digital Songs chart (which presumably tracks sales from iTunes and other online vendors) this week with 216,000 downloads sold.

when the hell is she supposed to be on gma? did i miss it? i have to go to work soon...

HAPPY FRIDAY THOUGH EVERYBODY!

"It was a lot of work," Rebecca says of the 12-hour shoot. "I redid that first scene – '7 a.m. I'm waking up in the morning' – I probably had to do 30 times."

damn girl

Can't watch this right now, but "Worst video in the world? Thousands ridicule teen singer" isn't the most charitable lead-in...

okay the part where she reads the negative youtube comments to her on-air, that's brutal

dayo, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:14 (thirteen years ago) link

is it too late to make her a wild card pick on this season of Idol?

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:17 (thirteen years ago) link

she's totally going to meet Bieber after that interview and she's already talking to some of her favorite bands on Twitter, between that and the iTunes $$$ i really just can't feel sorry for her

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:18 (thirteen years ago) link

IT'S FRIDAY

Fuck anyone who hates this song btw.

herbal bert (herb albert), Friday, 18 March 2011 13:19 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean even if she was a genuine pop star with a song people loved, there'd still be thousands of people saying horrible things about her in comments boxes, so if that's the biggest downside to this she's in pretty good shape

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:20 (thirteen years ago) link

idk, she's 13, having hundreds of thousands of people online saying you fucking suck can't be good for the psyche, even if you get a pony in return

dayo, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:20 (thirteen years ago) link

a pop star gets thousands of people saying that she's great though. this girl is saying 'haters gonna hate' but there's nothing to balance the hate...besides a bieber visit

dayo, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:21 (thirteen years ago) link

and piles of money and ample opportunities to appear on TV on her terms, prove she can 'really sing' or that she can laugh at herself?

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:24 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm sure that there are plenty of people around her saying that she's great. Meanwhile all these people saying she's crap are mostly anonymous Internet trolls.

do you really think she is gonna get to appear on tv 'on her terms'? pretty much any program that is going to have her is going to acknowledge her infamy

dayo, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Lots of love for her on this thread...they should read our posts out on TV.

well obviously she can't go "introduce me as 'beloved pop sensation Rebecca Black'" but i mean she's pretty in-demand now so i imagine she can dictate the line of questioning to some extent (and probably had a lot to do with the GMA segment focusing on mean comments and 'cyberbullying'), and if she does a skit on SNL or a web redemption on Tosh.0 or something i imagine she'll have to approve of the bit and make sure it's something she thinks is funny and not just mean.

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:30 (thirteen years ago) link

any manager/exec will tell her, rightly, that any road into fame or notoriety is good as long as it's not porn. if you end up having to play it for laughs, cool, your chances of making it "legitimately" were infinitesimal, now you get money. she'll get an ad deal (like tay zonday did) and will, worst case scenario, get a free ride through college. plus if she actually kept the rights to the song, whichever company her family sells it to for a commercial will pay a mint. the ascap or bmi from these nat'l tv appearances alone will be more than she was going to make this year for music anyway, it's all good in rebecca black's world so nobody should feel sorry for her.

xp

also, it would be pretty cool if it turned out she actually can sing

idk I feel if they live in the OC and her parents paid for this she's obviously not hurting for money and probably already has a trust fund? the real question is, did she want to become (in)famous with all that that entails.

dayo, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:34 (thirteen years ago) link

uh no but i'm pretty sure every celeb who goes on SNL or whatever gets to read the script first and decide whether they want to read the lines that were written for them (which = doing it on her own terms)

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd guess she can, and I'm sure that's her play - record stuff that nobody was ever going to hear, now people will & the right marketing team will get it to an audience that will like it - even if "ironically," guess what ironic dollars buy the same groceries earnest ones do

xp dayo this cost 2k. 2k does not mean "they're rich."

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 18 March 2011 13:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm looking at this more from the side of "she's 13 and not even in high school yet and basically anybody who wants to will be able to use this giant sledgehammer to insult and smash her self-esteem" just lookin out you know

money is not a palliative for everything, fame is not a unequivocal Good

dayo, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i said this upthread but she more deliberately courted fame and opened herself up to public opinion than 99% of people who become youtube memes, only reason i'm not 100% "yeah you knew what you were getting into" is that she's so young

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link

money is not a palliative for everything, fame is not a unequivocal Good

while this is true, it's generally better to have money than not. your self-esteem is a good deal less smashable if you can say "whatever to my haters, enjoy wearing the same shoes all year" in high school

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 18 March 2011 13:38 (thirteen years ago) link

well yeah that's the whole point! she's so young. I made a lot of things when I was 13 that I was really really proud of and thought deserved recognition, looking back now I would be absolutely mortified had any of them actually did

idk if a family feels they can blow 2k on a what is essentially a vanity music video instead of on, idk a SAT tutoring class or something, I'd say they were at least well off. I guess maybe the closest equivalent I can think of among people I know is a family that blows 2k on little league baseball uniforms for their kid? given where they live I'd say they are not hurting for money.

dayo, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:41 (thirteen years ago) link

would you have put a slick professional-looking video for a song you made at 13 on YouTube if you could've, though? i made some shitty demos when i was a teenager but i only played them for like 2 people.

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:41 (thirteen years ago) link

like you can't release a song, especially with a video with 'professional' production values, and then say "ok guys say something nice or say nothing at all." everyone who puts themselves out like that at any level risks ridicule in hopes of praise. that's not a very harsh reality, that's the bare minimum tradeoff for any kind of creative endeavor.

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:42 (thirteen years ago) link

hmm idk i could totally imagine them being like *really poor* and busting their asses to raise the money for a real shot at fame for their daughter, the only golden thing in their lives...

plax (ico), Friday, 18 March 2011 13:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm kind of amazed that this only cost 2K. recording, mastering, shooting, post-prod...?

fyi, this is where they live

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaheim_Hills,_Anaheim,_California

Anaheim Hills had an average annual household income of $127,298 in 2006.

dayo, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:45 (thirteen years ago) link

probably doesn't cost that much once you already own the recording equipment and some cameras and green screen stuff. they probably paid for the overhead with their first few clients and now it's mostly profit.

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:46 (thirteen years ago) link

idk its hi-def digital edited on a laptop. doubt there was many takes bc the vocals were bludgeoned into shape in post production. green screen is cheap.

plax (ico), Friday, 18 March 2011 13:46 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah the cost of production has dropped dramatically in the last few years hasn't it, this was probably made using iMovie or something

dayo, Friday, 18 March 2011 13:47 (thirteen years ago) link

OK fine, the pricetag is still amazing!
