why does Dom & other foax think that Pato looks like Usher? clearly the dude looks more like Common doesn't he? or at least nothing at all like Usher....

it's solely because of the haircut and the fact that he's smirking

for most white ppl, "smirking black man with short fade" = "THAT MUST BE USHER"

also with the whole Bieber thing ppl are predisposed to make "Usher likes to hang around young kids" jokes, it's like dude saw a particular spin on the MJ void and decided to strike while the iron was hitting puberty

he looks WAY less like Common than Usher or anyone else that's been mentioned so far

anticipating a Pomplamousse directed Rebecca Black video.

At what point this week (if at all) did you make the switch into thinking this whole thing is kind of fun/cool instead of laughable/ridiculous?

sometime on sunday for me

teledyldonix, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:23 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess i just didn't want this weekend to eeeeeeeeend

teledyldonix, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Pato looks like Kenyon Martin.

I'm actually rooting for her success now.

For me, it's always been both fun and ridiculous. I was never on-board with all the "worst song/video ever" talk, because if I find it amusing enough, then it's not exactly bad. But I do think that once the song was officially released as a single, then it became something worth rooting for, rather than just an Internet curio.

Joseph Beuys II Men (jaymc), Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:24 (thirteen years ago) link

That people are actually buying this in numbers is actually the most surprising part of this for me.

I kinda want to buy it, just to help propel it on the charts.

fat starwars kid isn't making $$ on iTunes.

― gr8080, Thursday, March 17, 2011 3:15 PM (7 minutes ago)

he also made a private video that was put online without his permission, not a flashy music video that was made public with his total consent ... not really a great comparison overall

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:25 (thirteen years ago) link

That's my place on it too. I've seen/heard plenty worse than this, but where I first got a kick out of making fun of it, I eventually began to appreciate its unifying silliness. xp to jaymc

I still think ARK are some creepers, though.

Overall, similar...but when you start comparing mouths and noses and eyes, it falls apart.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:29 (thirteen years ago) link

I misread that as "The guest rapper looks like Garry Shandling." And, well, he sorta does.

fat starwars kid isn't making $$ on iTunes.

Is Rebecca Black? I'm guessing that when you sign up to something like this the paperwork signs most of the profits to ARK, but...

Anyway I guess I'm rooting for her because my name is Rebecca, I found being 13 pretty traumatic, and she looks as blankly nervous and confused by the concept of "partying" as I was back then. (Ah, projection.)

R-B, Rebecca Black
So chillin’ in the front seat (In the front seat)
In the back seat (In the back seat)
I’m drivin’, cruisin’ (Yeah, yeah)
Fast lanes, switchin’ lanes
Wit’ a car up on my side (Woo!)
(C’mon) Passin’ by is a school bus in front of me
Makes tick tock, tick tock, wanna scream
Check my time, it’s Friday, it’s a weekend
We gonna have fun, c’mon, c’mon, y’all
The unexamined life is not worth living.

taco al pastorius (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link

lol i just figured out that this guy's name is really pato and you all weren't on some extended riff on our own king boy for the the whole thread

goole, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:46 (thirteen years ago) link

I just came to the harrowing realization that Rebecca Black, at age 13, has not ever known a world where Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake aren't famous. Not that it means much, but "Oops! I Did it Again" to her is like "More Than a Feeling" to me. :/

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link

"Oops" is only 2 years older than she is.

taco al pastorius (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost -- Well, yeah. That's how generations work.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I got that mixed up, she is only 2 years older than "Oops" (the song, not Luna's ex-bf).

oh snap

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:55 (thirteen years ago) link

xp - I know, but half of it is "she is so young" and the other half is "Britney and Justin have been around that long, but it doesn't seem like that long."

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:55 (thirteen years ago) link

This article from last year about Ark prodigy Kaya is amusing:

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/doug_moe/article_6dcb6cf0-83d7-11df-a6f0-001cc4c002e0.html

Some percentage of haterade must stem from how Rebecca unintentionally has become a household name without that long struggle for recognition on the merits of talent, despite not being represented by a "high-powered entertainment law firm" - yet.

Wit’ a car up on my side (Woo!)

^i heard "cop" for "car" (and thought the Woo! was supposed to be a siren)

An adult guest rapper (donna rouge), Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link

i can't see how that works, unless the 'haters' are the people that are confused and think "Friday" is a normal hit song with the support of the music industry and are outraged that people sincerely like something so bad (xpost)

some dude, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:59 (thirteen years ago) link

granted, there do seem to be a fair number of people with that misconception

some dude, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:59 (thirteen years ago) link

this song still sucks and is unintentionally hilarious. i'm not rooting for Rebecca but not rooting against her either. in 3 days I'll have forgotten about this just like I did Pants on the Ground

Someone make a poll so we can decide who the second-best Ark Music artist is?

Or would CJ Fam walk away with it?

I kinda love "My Jeans" too.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Thursday, 17 March 2011 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link

I would appear that from the comments on youtube and iTunes for the song and the "worst song ever written" in the press that, yes, much of the (young) audience is believing that this is being dished out to them by the music industry, one which decides what is good and who we shall make stars of. I mean I could be wrong but I have doubts any kind of fraction of those 13 whatever million views care about "outsider music".

Spectrist, Thursday, 17 March 2011 21:11 (thirteen years ago) link

someone should loop the "fun fun fun fun" refrain and layer the rest of the vocal track over it "O Superman"-style

Totally - it's just this thing to behold. This magical, miserable diversion.

Spectrist, Thursday, 17 March 2011 21:13 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the either/or of totally outraged gullibles and nerds who use the term "outsider music" is a bit of a false dichotomy that ignores a much larger third group
