Oh my god, will I get anything done today at all...

you guys in that 5x slowed one it's really, really worth hanging on 'til she gets to the chorus at about the four minute mark. Huge empty space suspension between "take" and "Friday" - and in the space, peeking through, it's God

something that might be obvious but im gonna say anyway is that part of the massive appeal of something like this (for me) is that it hasn't been seized upon by the normal media yet. the only commentary is like, animated gifs and comment boxes. (and the song and video itself is outsider art, in a way - also outside the "normal" media). as soon as she does her today show appearance, as soon as the onion does a NIB on her, as soon as SNL gets someone to imitate her, it'll be over (in that sense)

that's probably less true of this than most other internet memes, tbh. i mean, as i pointed out upthread, the main thing that really kicked off this video getting tons of hits (after being online for almost a month beforehand) was that it was featured on the official blog of Tosh.0, a TV show dedicated to making fun of online memes.

Have to turn the volume down a bit on RB though.

huh! well, i'm still going to feel like something's been taken away when i see some late-night host cracking wise about it.

why? the media is the internet and the internet is the media. we're not in an actual series of underground tubes. (xpost)

max, Thursday, 17 March 2011 16:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm not sure the ~mainstream media~ have yet got a handle on it and its appeal (yes APPEAL) - a lot of the commentary is stuck in the 5 minutes after you first hear it, the "omg this is the worst song ever" stage. that is insufficient! we are ~beyond~ that now.

well some memes are confined to hardcore nerd sites like 4chan for a good while before spreading all over the net, that's not really the case here

some dude, Thursday, 17 March 2011 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

you guys the idea that this one hadn't reached bed-intruder saturation level by yesterday morning is hopelessly quaint

I spent most of earlier listening to Emeralds-esque stuff and the "synth doo DOO dado" makes this fit right in.

whoa @ that moment

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 March 2011 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Aero, if you're referring to my question about whether "Friday" will outrank "Bed Intruder" on the Hot 100, I think that's a slightly different issue. (Though I do now think it's inevitable.)

zappi, Thursday, 17 March 2011 17:27 (thirteen years ago) link

You should do it - much as I like the one as it stands, it wasn't quite what I was hoping for in terms of a 'spiralling into insanity' chant. It only really works for me with Bieber.

I laffed a lot at this, thx.

This record is terrible to the point where I actually feel kind of sorry for the girl, I mean I guess she probably thought she was making a proper pop rekkid, maybe even dreamed of it being a hit? Now there are like 250,000+ people all calling her a moron. Poor kid. I guess if it got playlisted and became part of the autotune morass I hear on the radio when I'm out in the car, it's very shambolicness might actually make it stand out from the crowd. It would actually be hilarious if the thing was a hit, and you couldn't get away from it for like 4-6 weeks or something. Probably ark music factory or w/e they're called's only chance of continuing, they must be cursing all this meme-y shit, which rich parent is going to use them in future after this? They'll have to splash out some real $$$$ and hire Stargate. Also, bad as this is, I have heard worse in the last few years eg dolly rockers or "my humps".

lycanthrope electrif (Pashmina), Thursday, 17 March 2011 17:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't get why people feel sorry for her. I'm guessing she's probably psyched about all the attention that she's getting and the fact that her crappy song probably will turn out to be a legitimate hit. She's probably making major career plans right now!

Moodles, Thursday, 17 March 2011 17:31 (thirteen years ago) link

even as young as she is, she was waaaay more aware that her likeness was going to be beamed out to the internet for admiration or ridicule than the overwhelming majority of youtube superstars

some dude, Thursday, 17 March 2011 17:34 (thirteen years ago) link

xp - Yeah but that's kind of unlikely to work out for her.

Getting down on fried egg (seandalai), Thursday, 17 March 2011 17:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean think of all the people we've laughed at who thought they were making a home movie or public access show that would be seen by 10 people, or who didn't even know there was a camera on them at the time

some dude, Thursday, 17 March 2011 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost

It's probably already worked out better than she expected. The rest is gravy.

Moodles, Thursday, 17 March 2011 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

i think what will bear her psyche up in these go-go days of meme overload is the thought that "there is something about me that seems to hook people, even if the song IS bad" and i don't think she'd be wrong

Am I the only one that sees a contemporary parallel to the whole song-poem "Beat of the Traps" MSR sort of pay someone to record your song scheme? I mean, clearly RB brought her own lyrics. Right? I hope?

Scott, I am almost 100% certain someone released that on Wax Trax! in 1988.

xp- Couple of song-poem comparisons upthread, but I think it's been established that the music and lyrics were composed holistically by Ark.

xxxxp janet jackson's chorus doesn't really mesh well with the fun fun loop, but when it's just busta rapping over it, it's a crazy new sort of greatness...
