i feel like she had to have written this

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 16:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, that was my question above re: Ark: do their video stars bring in their own lyrics, or was this a pre-written thing?

Partyin', partyin', fun fun fun fun (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Right but are 13 year olds really THAT vapid? It seems like an adult approximation of 13-year-old vapidity. Like I know it's like "lol kids are so simple, they care about cookies and treehouses and getting A's" and shit, but srsly do you have N O T H I N G else to write abt besides Friday in and of itself? Or is it her putting herself in some wacky frame of mind of how she thinks songs ought to be written?

Sheneneh et Caro (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

hate to break it to you but most of the population are not thinking deep thoughts

I am sorry for my insensitive tweet (Edward III), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 16:41 (thirteen years ago) link

all the articles about Ark so far seem to imply that they provide the whole package for their clients -- writing/producing the songs and just putting them in front of the microphone to sing it

i feel the elephant in the literal room is her parents, watching over the production and paying the bill. it HAS to be bland and naive so as not to offend Mom

unbelievable!

which reminds me when i was a boy one of my fav tv shows was double dare - oh man i used to sit there thinking of how i would crush that obstacle course - anyway the girl contestants when asked abt their hobbies would typically include writing pop songs - i remember not really understanding wtf they were talking abt - like im sure i knew what a pop song was, maybe i didnt realize that someone had to write them, or maybe i just couldnt imagine little girls writing them, or what theyd do w/them - not sure that any of them actually did write pop songs or what particularly that meant in context or if it was just a cool thing to say on double dare or w/e - anyway friday is a song by a double dare contestant basically

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah if an actual 13-year-old girl wrote this it might well still be bad but it would be bad in a v. different way.

Like the 13 year old me writing a song would have at least talked about DOING SOMETHING on the weekend, like dying your hair blue or going to Hot Topic or pinning a Fugazi patch on your hoodie or something

Sheneneh et Caro (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 16:56 (thirteen years ago) link

"13-yr-old girls to be exact. they kind of weird me out w/r/t r.black b/c she's not remotely sexualised"

yeah, lots of projection going on. but maybe everything is so sexualized now that people see it everywhere no matter what. like when people were talking about that other video and saying OMG creepy abandoned house who are these perv music company people! and it IS kind of a weird scene, but on the other hand, little kids explore outside all the time! and go into weird abandoned buildings and stuff. so, really, its kinda cute or something? interesting how people read these things though.

I mean, 13 year old girls do not party on the weekends, okay? They just don't.

Sheneneh et Caro (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 17:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think a 13 year old would write that.

Sheneneh et Caro (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

you're hanging out with some lame 13-year-old girls, dude

brigitte beardo (donna rouge), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

It's just this laughably generic and meaningless idea of what a "fun time" is supposed to be, without any sort of real thought or substance.

I also remember a startlingly high number of teen pregnancies starting around age 15

i'm guessing this song's chart ascent will be so widely reported that it's just a matter of time til we get exact sales figures
