Man, so wanna post a picture now of Kim Jong-Il with "IT'S FLIE-DAY, FLIE-DAY" lyrics but it just seems in bad taste.

yeah it's a shame cuz in the right context that would seem witty and thought provoking

I had the SouthPark pokemon training camp in the back of mind the wholetime, so I am picking up what you're putting down there, Phil

People find "Friday" hilarious not because it's appreciably more stupid in general than other pop songs, but because somehow it's also stupid about pop notwithstanding the fact that clearly a lot of people involved either have experience in the area or money to hire other people who do.

I'd say it's actually not very stupid about pop at all if you take into account the low expectations one normally has from a vanity song. I mean when I first saw it without knowing what it was I didn't mentally categorize it as another zonday-type lol video, I just thought "here's another unambitious and mediocre pop song." Once you find out that it's a vanity thing I feel like you can only come to one of two conclusions: (1) that it's become incredibly easy to make a moderately catchy pop song or (2) that Ark Music are awfully good for vanity producers. Or possibly both. Seems like there's maybe an underlying attempt by the Ark Music guys to show that they can make a hit with ANYONE, that the singer doesn't matter at all. Which is sort of interesting, I guess.

The thing is I don't feel like there are clear rules of camp anymore, because camp so dominates the culture. I can't tell if the lyrics of this song are supposed to be funny or not and either way they seem so mind-numbing that it doesn't matter to me.

i think it's true what scott said about the negative just not mattering to anyone any more. the ridicule doesn't mean a single thing to rebecca black and/or ark. they are officially the hottest thing on the internet as of this moment right here and i feel very confident that every single downvote or negative comment they see as just the inevitable haters hatin. the bigger you are the more haters you get, etc.

O.T.M. My immediate thought was, "Wow, Radio Disney has just given up completely here."

Well, and that's the thing with these songwriting/production teams, they have these beats and structures and maybe some melody or instrumentation sitting around and can plug anything and anyone into it depending on who they're working with. Kinda like the Ryan Tedder/Kelly Clarkson/Beyonce kerfuffle from last year.

THE DEFINING WORDS OF THE POST-EMPIRE

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 23:41 (thirteen years ago) link

The song didn't go viral because it's an unambitious piece of daytime radio filler, it went viral because it united everyone from Britney fans to 4Chan in laughing at how terrible it is. It has a surface feel of slick studio professionalism but the beating heart is one of hapless amateurism - something clearly distinct, for the majority i'd wager, from the junk Disney comes up with on its off days. That said, hapless amateurism isn't limited to vanity projects - if something like Vanilla's No Way, No Way, were around today, it would have the same kind of reaction.

I'd be genuinely surprised if Ark Music had any idea that this song, or any of their others, would get more than 60,000 or 70,000 Youtube views. The primary audience is surely the friends and family of the kids concerned. The objective isn't to turn average kids into stars with their songwriting / studio wizardry, it's to make them feel like stars, while pocketing a healthy cheque from their parents.

One of the most interesting things, for me, has been the general lack of malice in the meme-generating responses. She's quite an easy target - someone fundamentally talentless getting to live her dreams on a public stage thanks to the largess of her wealthy parents - but the ribbing has tended to be pretty good natured, by tumblr-bait standards. Again, i think it comes down to the amateurism - there's a kind of goofy charm that comes with it that an equally bad song by a pro singer might not carry.

Ha ha ha ha. Jack my swag. (ShariVari), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 23:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Quincy Jones' voice emanating from the iPad at the launch party is an underrated moment in all this, I think.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 23:47 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i get it if the song sounds "real" to people who aren't all that familiar with or interested in teenpop, or who hate it, but otherwise your immediate response is "either something weird is Up with this or it is a really, really unprecedented low". my reaction was basically tim's--the song is so incompetent in so many weird ways; i'd never seen anything like it.

this will have its own panel at the next emp pop conference. people had idol fever at the one in los angeles. idol idol idol. they could do a whole conference on idol. there are so many angles you can take. s whole world of idol! forever and ever. and rebecca/ark is similar. there is lots to talk about here! i don't agree with the couple of people on here who don't think it's worth talking about. it's fun to talk about.

i think the annoyance about "talking about it" is due to the self-referential nature of the discussion. eventually we're just talking about the fact that we're talking about it, ad infinitum. the think pieces and analysis that follows is just as predictable and tiresome. it's like this ride no one can get off...

I think this is the quickest turnaround from the time a meme goes viral to the time my mother forwards a link of it to me.
