ke$ha is also an adult whose junk boys want to touch.

i'm guessing some of the <3 apologists itt have for this track is because, as tweens or former tweens, they empathize with the simple joy of the school week finishing

don't forget according to iatee's recent poll, many ilx users are actually 13

xxp
okay I'm at the club, yeah goin' to the club
gotta get boys, have 'em touch me on my junk
ordering drinks, gosh look at all these drinks
have to pick a drink, and then I'll get drunk

(also everything c sharp major is saying about the lyrics to this not actually being anything like any actual pop at all is otm, that is why it is so funny)

difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link

except the "fun fun fun" part - pretty sure that's been in a pop song before

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link

but this 'now i'm doing this, now i'm doing that, making a statement of fact' super banal stuff

'Cause you're hot then you're cold
You're yes then you're no
You're in then you're out
You're up then you're down
You're wrong when it's right
It's black and it's white
We fight, we break up
We kiss, we make up

yeah, but that is about "~feelings~" not eating a bowl of cereal

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 18:58 (thirteen years ago) link

that is a structured description of contrasting abstract states that happen over the course of a relationship

vs an unstructured list of physical things happening in the order that they are happening

like again that is the opposite of "friday"

This list is a lot different from that list because of because

slugbuggy, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:01 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess there are some similarities between this song and Beastie Boys' "Fight for Your Right to Party"

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:02 (thirteen years ago) link

i think ppl calling this a 'typical' pop lyrics are probably using "Party in the USA" as a reference point, and it's true, this is kind of like an artless version of

Jumped in the cab, here I am for the first time
Look to my right, and I see the Hollywood sign
[...]
I'm noddin' my head like yeah
Movin' my hips like yeah

I mean I'm not trying to equate Rebecca Black and Ke$ha or whomever as performers and difficult listening hour is correct in re: their dedication to their performances, but when it comes to the, eh, I don't know, songwriting values? we're into some narcissism of small differences territory here, big time.

Ian Curtis danced like a tortured chicken DO U SEE (Phil D.), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

in 5 yrs we will look back on this girl as the 'star wars kid' of the 2010s

SBlendor in the grass (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

narcissism of small differences = equating a 13 year old girl with an adult woman? Pretty sure Chris Hansen would have something to say about that.

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link

That's not what I'm doing. At all. I'm talking about the songs qua songs, not the performers behind them.

Ian Curtis danced like a tortured chicken DO U SEE (Phil D.), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:08 (thirteen years ago) link

I get up when I want, except on Wednesday's, when I get rudely awakened by the dustman. I have a cup of tea, out my trousers on, and think about leaving the house. Fun fun fun fun.

get this even if i don't agree, doubt either of us would benefit from arguing it.

difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:10 (thirteen years ago) link

in this case, how easy is it to separate the song from the performer though?

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:10 (thirteen years ago) link

and the subject matter of the songs are different -- ke$ha's are adult in nature.

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

xp what are you, william butler yeats?

SBlendor in the grass (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:12 (thirteen years ago) link

like dumb songs about getting wasted and getting laid have a qualitative difference than a dumb song about a pre-teen eating cereal and waiting for the bus.

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link

get up, get out of bed
drag a comb across my head
made my way downstairs and drank a cup
looking up, i noticed i was late
grabbed my coat, grabbed my hat
gotta get down to the bus stop
gotta catch the bus
'cuz its FRI-EEE-DAY, FRI-EEE-DAY

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

also has anyone considered the possibility that if this girl 'sounds like' ke$ha it's because maybe she LIKES ke$ha and was trying to emulate her? "gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal" is kinda like a crude 13-year-old approximation of "wake up in the morning feelin' like p.diddy", right?

SBlendor in the grass (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I feel kinda bad for her tbh, imagine if that fake pop song you recorded in your bedroom when you were 12 was all of a sudden being parodied by 5 million ppl and perpetua was calling you non-charismatic

But it's not like this is the Numa Numa guy in his bedroom, RB has to some degree signed up to "being a pop star" with whatever promotion Ark can offer. It's a bit sad that she finds out how the world/Internet works in such a public way but she or her parents should have known better.

I'm gonna do this version of the song as some serial killer type might do it and I'll be like super-viral, it'll be so funny

then I will live another 40 years or so with the shame of my act, and then die

thread is moving so quickly that you could declare 'friday' to be the vacuous pop analog of 'life: a user's manual' and nobody would notice. hitler. poo.

clearly her agonizing over whether to get in the front or back seat is symbolic of the anxiety teen girls feel regarding their impending womenhood. does she ride in the chaste front seat, or become a creature of sexual agency by choosing the back seat?

there are levels of complexity here you sneering ghouls have not even begun to scratch

seeing as the rapper is actually the adult version of her, one could say that this dilemma is resolved by learning to be comfortable in both seats

first you insinuate she is a timeshifting biracial hermaphrodite, and then recommend a path of polymorphous, perverse sexuality? you sir are a cad.

LOL politics blogger John Cole:

Apparently this is the newest big thing, and it is sweeping the intertrons because it is apparently really, really bad. Critics are panning it, and Sullivan included one critic who stated that “Black’s video for ‘Friday’ is one of those rare occurrences where even the most seasoned critics of Internet culture don’t know where to begin. From the singing straight out of Auto-Tuned hell to lyrics such as ‘Tomorrow is Saturday / And Sunday comes afterwards / I don’t want this weekend to end’ and a hilariously bad rap about passing school buses, ‘Friday’ is something that simply must be seen and heard to be fully appreciated.”

Here’s my problem, and why I think I am getting old. First, I’d never heard of it. Second, I watched it and listened, and to me, it seemed not much worse than most of the crap you hear every day anyway. Flip through the television and watch any of the shows on Disney or those networks geared towards teens, and you hear this kind of crap every single day. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t my style of music and I think it is bad in that sense and I will live a very happy life if I never have to listen to it again, but I have a hard time describing it as qualitatively worse than any crap that has spewed from Miley Cyrus or the likes. If I were in a store or restaurant and that was playing in the background I wouldn’t stop and say “That’s really bad,” because it sounds just like all the other crap out there passing itself off as music.

And I thought the young girl singing it had a sweet smile.

xp the sound effect in the background is basically equivalent to when you cross the final gate-thing in a super mario world level
