Fam, I mean. I guess only exclusive members of the Ark Ent family get to know about the shed, now.

some people here have probably not even heard Alana Lee's "Butterflies", and that makes me sad b/c it is a much better song than "Friday":

recently i have started interpreting the "which seat can i take?" as a direct question to the audience, asked the same way dora the explorer and the guy from blues clues ask their viewers where the tree/clue/whatever is

Lex's analysis has made me realise that this song corresponds exactly to the picture of Kafka Judith Butler put forward the other week:

precisely because of this apparently objective and rigorous mode of writing, a certain horror opens up in the midst of the quotidian, perhaps also an unspeakable grief

I like what scott's saying on this thread

I have to admit as a long time fan of things like Y. Bhekhirst and Ken DeFeudis, it's been interesting what the internet has done to the idea of 'outsider music' -- technically incompetent but completely earnest and slightly strange songs suddenly finding a huge mainstream audience. the second repetition in the chorus of 'Friday' totally hits my nervous system, something totally genuine about it (even though it's the same performance cut and pasted for every chorus)

and I know these gifs are meant as mocking but face it the longer you look at them -- behold ACTUAL 13 YEAR OLD GIRLS looking completely awkward on camera -- if this is the way things are going, this is 9000x better than kesha or katy perry or any of that straight up bullshit that I've seen grown people on this board make an argument for that is absolutely, inarguably confusing and poisoning the landscape for other actual 13 year old girls

things like "Hot In The Airport" will never make 2.5 million hits in two days, I know this is something different, but it's the same lineage and it's a hell of a lot more interesting to me than most of the stuff usually taking up space on new answers

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 05:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean it is interesting -- the lineage is less true complete-outsiders like Ken DeFeudis and more the dial-a-song poem people as mentioned upthread. I know this is a factory, not true expressive wellspring, and I think the people saying 'creepy' are more responding to the factory aspect of it. But I like that too, the factory aspect is more laid bare here than ever before, if you find this creepy it completely exposes all the other factory pop you've ever let yourself like, and I like that too

you don't get to 2.5 million hits by accident, this isn't just 'oh wow this is the worst', this is recognition

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 05:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I agree with all that.

Milton - has anyone autotuned Florence Foster Jenkins?

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 05:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I think she also makes for an interesting comparison. The problem I have with this in terms of previous outsider music, is that a lot of the charms of the historical stuff is its earnestness, but how "earnest" can you be, or be perceived, with autotune? Like it's too polished to really have that aesthetic.

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 05:50 (thirteen years ago) link

why does she only sing the second syllable on weekend most of the time

rumpie's trusty nuts (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 05:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Maybe it's just me but does the yellow BUS STOP sign move just a teeny bit around when she says "stop", like right before the edit?

Sheneneh et Caro (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 05:52 (thirteen years ago) link

how many times have you watched this, Stevie?

sarahel, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 05:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Honestly? Maybe 15

48. The background "Friday, Friday" paired with impassioned hair-stroke at 3:17-3:18

Sheneneh et Caro (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 06:01 (thirteen years ago) link

49. when all the other kids are either waving or pumping their fists, there's one person in the front right corner of the crowd who is either making devil horns or pointing at RB as if to say, "this girl! this girl!"

administratieve blunder (unregistered), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 06:12 (thirteen years ago) link

I can dig the earnestness of this kind of stuff. I can dig the honesty. But just being earnest and honest isn't enough. I mean, Bright Eyes is earnest and honest. It still sucks.
