it's like Small Wonder hit puberty and made a song (note: haven't watched the video yet, too exposed at work)

KICKIN IN THE FRONT SEAT
KICKIN IN THE BACK SEAT

VegemiteGrrl, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I still hold out hope that the rapper is saying "I BE REBECCA BLACK" because that would make just about as much sense as anything else in this song

Discovered the video at 4 am with a bunch of my fellow students pulling an all-nighter in the library. Weekend-long ILX/internet break meant that our first exposure to it was on no sleep and very little sanity. Laughed so hard I cried. My brain is still singing it.

The rapper swaying along to the beat in the car at the end is an undersung moment.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 14 March 2011 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, people who are the most "amazed" at the songwriting/performance of this song probably don't have kids/nephews/nieces and have been subjected to hours of Radio Disney, of which this would probably be a highpoint tbqh.

I mean when it starts she looks like she's trying to make armpit fart noises and then it just falls apart. Even she doesn't appear to know what she's doing here.

KBP needs to be informed of this

VegemiteGrrl, Monday, 14 March 2011 23:06 (thirteen years ago) link

The most compelling thing for me is the look of panic that intermittently flashes across her face, as if she realises the futility of her brief fame even before it happens.

Top PR work by Ark Entertainment though.

oigwheoiqng4g (seandalai), Monday, 14 March 2011 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link

so were the other kids in the video actually her friends, or were they just paid to be her friends?

her daytime car friends look p overwhelmed by life, not incl. the enthusiastic backseat beckoner pictured above.

Its like a professional version of those insta-studios you can go to, karaoke it up in front of a greenscreen and then burn it to CD.

do you think she'd cry if she read this thread?

sarahel, Monday, 14 March 2011 23:36 (thirteen years ago) link

yes, but only because today is monday

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 14 March 2011 23:37 (thirteen years ago) link

45. That not only is Rebecca Black's school bus stop designated with a large, diamond-shaped yellow sign, like you would see for a curve in the road or a lane merge, it was 'shopped in for fear that we'd think she was just a LOSER loitering by herself on the sidewalk. Just in case we didn't hear her talking about the BUS TWICE in the lyrics.

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Monday, 14 March 2011 23:42 (thirteen years ago) link

guys i still have this stuck in my head

lex pretend, Monday, 14 March 2011 23:42 (thirteen years ago) link

worse than even that, i think i'm beginning to like it.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Monday, 14 March 2011 23:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i like how the lyrics expose the inherent mundanity of stream-of-consciousness, it's like...the brain in repose

lex pretend, Monday, 14 March 2011 23:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Interview them all for a Guardian piece, Lex.
