A thread for the Cure reissues

It is a shame, really, because in early 1991, The Cure were well on their way to making a record that was going to be better than Disintegration. If these songs were not tampered with, Wish could have easily topped its predecessor.

it is a shame, really, because in early 2011, threeimaginarygirls.com was well on its way to writing an article that didn't assume everyone believes Disintegration is better than Wish. if this article was not so presumptive, it could have easily said some people prefer Wish to Disintegration.

(i can't say it's *better*, hard to say objectively... Disintegration is certainly more of a piece, etc. but i play Wish more often, and that has to mean something... just sayin')

Of course people can't "objectively" say that but if you're subjectively placing Wish above or beside Disintegration you're in something of a minority.

Best Cure Album (Poll Closes May 25)

1 out of 108 votes, compared with 38 for Disintegration.

on... imo (onimo), Sunday, 13 March 2011 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

not saying it's better/above, but saying i listen to it more often-- maybe i prefer it? dunno.

while we wait for Wish

Apparently planning to do "Mixed Up" at first.

Are they doing Mixed Up still?

I accidentally bought the reissue of Head On The Door twice. I need Three Imaginary Boys, The Top and Kiss Me reissues. Anybody want to swap?

"Fiction Records are proud to announce the re-release of the first 5 Cure albums on heavy weight coloured vinyl which have been specially commissioned for Record Store Day on April 21st. Each album will be individually numbered and Limited to 2,500 copies and will also come with a voucher to download the album digitally. what a tragedy for heavy weight vinyl

took me a while to notice this but "Sadicic" on The Top reiussue is an embryo of "Prayers of Rain". Still can't place that recurring guitar riff in that song.

So, that Wish deluxe edition, then. . . any time you wanna release that there, Rob. Right, then.

austinato (Austin), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 13:29 (nine years ago) link

He is busy working on a new album that won't come out, either, even though nobody really wants it.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 14:08 (nine years ago) link

This thread will be a decade old in November and it probably STILL won't be out.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 14:14 (nine years ago) link

I just want Mixed Up reissued in a vinyl box with the actual 12" mixes that matter like Primary added to the rest of the original tracklist.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 17:24 (nine years ago) link

The whole reissue campaign started off so well, I hoped we would be able to march right through the catalog and carch up. But then I remembered that this is The Cure.

This becomes even more apparent if you listen to the 'Prayers for Rain' early versions.

Good catch.

austinato (Austin), Thursday, 8 May 2014 02:10 (nine years ago) link

So yeah I just listened to The Glove for the first time ever.

1. Holy fuck
2. Help
3. A Blues in Drag and Orgy are like what I always wish electronic film scores sounded like
4. This is almost like having another album by my beloved therapy-damaged 80s artpop losers The Fibonaccis
5. Certain tracks on this prefigure the sound of The Knife's Silent Shout to an extent I have heard nowhere else, is it just me?
6. Yes

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Friday, 16 May 2014 19:37 (nine years ago) link

yeah, i remember listening to that album for the first time back in the day and it really blew my mind, so good.

Bee OK, Saturday, 17 May 2014 01:58 (nine years ago) link

The sound of Robert Smith's guitar on Blue Sunshine is just about one of my favorite things ever.

This is probably the best thing that came out of that project:

So good ! We should poll that album if enough people have heard it.

Signs of life!

I'll cut the cryptic crap soon, certainly before Christmas, but wanted to hint a little bit about next year's plans on The Cure project because I am excited! Be great to work with my old chums, as we go so far back. Going to be a bumper year for the 40th anniversary!

— Tim Pope (@timpopedirector) December 3, 2017

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 December 2017 15:23 (six years ago) link

Earlier:

Being the kind-hearted person I am, I can confirm one of my upcoming projects next year is with The Cure with whom I have worked since 1981. This will be with the full participation of Robert. Updates when I can, but suffice to say it will be a 40th anniversary project.

— Tim Pope (@timpopedirector) December 1, 2017

And holy shit

Flicka flicka flicka. Here you are. Dust my lemon lies. 50 dusty boxes filled with memories. None of it seen before. From the 1970s to present day. Put that in your pipe and smoke it! More soon.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 December 2017 15:25 (six years ago) link

is there still a reissue / expansion of Mixed Up in the works ? that's by far my favorite Cure.

droit au butt (Euler), Sunday, 3 December 2017 16:40 (six years ago) link

Yeah that's what's unclear. If both audio and video could get properly jump-started here...

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 December 2017 16:42 (six years ago) link

hey, maybe the cure can leverage neil young's archive setup for this project! the key is to replicate the actual experience of opening a drawer stuffed with chaotically organized documents

Karl Malone, Sunday, 3 December 2017 16:47 (six years ago) link

Just listened to an interview with Tim Pope on Adam Buxton's podcast the other day. Buxton introduced the podcast with a disclaimer that Tim was not on drugs during the taping and something to the effect of "he is just a very animated man by nature". Disappointingly, they didn't discuss the Cure much, if at all.

how's life, Sunday, 3 December 2017 17:04 (six years ago) link

They need to do Mixed Up with all the 12" mixes (Primary!) and it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they packaged together the B-Sides from the Standing On A Beach Cassette (heck, toss on the 87-90 b-sides too).

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 3 December 2017 17:09 (six years ago) link

that is the worst fucking UX I've ever seen on a website

akm, Sunday, 3 December 2017 20:46 (six years ago) link

So many demos and rare bits were floated out on the back of the 2cd reissues, I'm wondering then if this is some sort of visual retrospective

MaresNest, Sunday, 3 December 2017 21:05 (six years ago) link

Does read like a visual project.

yeah - probably a box-set repackage of the old VHS compilations + Cure in Orange with added behind the scenes skits

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 4 December 2017 09:53 (six years ago) link

I dont really care about videos - give me the Wish remaster and maybe a '40 Imaginary years' book and I'll let them retire quietly

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 4 December 2017 10:19 (six years ago) link

There's a ton of really smart early TV performances that I'd like to own in decent quality, foreign TV shows and things like The Tube and the Oxford Roadshow.

Wow 30 years since Orange, say it isn’t so.

MaresNest, Monday, 4 December 2017 12:35 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I remember there being a couple of funny bits of studio footage circa Japanese Whispers and The Head on the Door ... and outtakes from the 'Let's Go To Bed' shoot.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 4 December 2017 12:48 (six years ago) link

That was the bit I was 'do'ing

Mark G, Monday, 4 December 2017 17:57 (six years ago) link

I love that part where Robert and Lol are sitting for photos and Lol says something like, "I felt terrible earlier, but now I feel wonderful." To which Robert responds, "That's because of all the drugs we took."

And then turns and looks wide eyed straight into the camera and covers his mouth with his hand.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Monday, 4 December 2017 19:05 (six years ago) link

Hah. About half of The Cure's discography is about drinking or doing drugs.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 4 December 2017 19:12 (six years ago) link

Footage that surfaced earlier in the year, would buy the shit out of a collection of this type of thing.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 July 2022 13:32 (one year ago) link

That's pretty awesome. Sometimes I think that they've been dragging their feet with this one because it's the last reissue anyone will be excited about.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 July 2022 13:52 (one year ago) link

Here it comes!

It looks lovely. The Lost Wishes stuff ought to have been on Join the Dots if there was any room but also their CD debut was always going to be one of the big draws to Wish.

Anyway I've/we've waited years for more instrumental demos - hope some of them are RS and his chintzy home get-up but I guess they'd be marked as such if so.
