You Vote FaUSt: The FAUST nearly-complete discography poll (1971-2011)

Nick i haven't picked up Tapes yet b/c i've seen like three different CD versions w/ various cover art, am scared i'll get the wrong one. is there a definitive issue i should look for?

i think they are all the same, some broken into tracks and some with just one track for each side

'Tapes' for absolutely silencing my parents over xmas dinner in '74 when my mother suggested 'put on some of your music, dear' .....

....I actually thought they'd mind it less than Roxy or Bowie....

I don't know the answer to this, I've only got the original vinyl. But ReR are usually pretty dependable for quality product imo.

not sure what to vote for here tbh, i like several of these a lot (Faust, So Far, IV, You Know, Rien...)

torn between Tapes and IV, but will always have a soft spot for 71 Minutes

71 Minutes was my intro to Faust and I like it a lot, as well.
Had to vote So Far, though.

So Far by a nose, the nose being "...In The Spirit," which is ruling for me today for some reason.

1st one for me. that 1st side is just magic. they're coming out to australia in june (for one concert!) so will be finally able to see them.

Faust IV is probably my favorite album by any krautrock band, period. It's flawless.

This probably belongs here more...

Interesting stuff regarding Faust IV, particularly as JCope's book had it that people were massively disappointed by it when it came out.

I've tried to understand this and came up with :

The previous album cost 49p, and had lots of snippetty ideas and a few more complete songs, whereas IV starts with 11 mins of strummy noise, then some songs and ideas, a not terribly pre-posessing sleeve and a white inner sleeve.

Moral: Never do something cut-price, then expect yr customers to pay top whack next time.

Is a vote for Wumme Years basically just a vote saying you can't chose and you don't think it is IV?

Tapes = So Far > IV > 1st

First one I heard was "So Far". Also great are "Munic and Elsewhere" / "71 Minutes"... well, basically anything by the original band is unbeatable.

I like "You Know FaUSt" best of the later stuff (that I've heard).

I want to vote for "Wumme Years", as I got it for £2 at a CD/DVD shop in Basingstoke.

Can just imagine you saying that: standing up, puffing out your chest and sticking your thumbs in your lapels

I voted IV although there's at least one brilliant song/moment on everything here.

Absolutely, I was playing devil's advocaat there..

I thought it great on the first play, but was trying to rationalise why it was perceived as such a massive letdown at the time.

Yeah I'm surprised that Tapes got 10 while the s/t only got 3. The s/t is way better, IMO...

Think the rehabilitation of "IV" more than complete, prolly needs to be knocked down again now

IV was the only one that remained in print throughout the 90s when Faust became hip again.

Beyond the opening track, I don't think it's as good as their earlier albums. Opening track is, uh, pretty good!

“tapes” sounds AMAZING right now, such a weird and silly and deeply beautiful labyrinth of fragments blossoming into epiphanies

that scream at the end of "No Harm" is one of my favorite things ever

I ended up with three copies of the polydor "So Far" single.

One was a perfectly serviceable vg copy

One a mint lovely one I found at a bargain price

And one a rotten mispress with chunks and divots on side a, side b is perfect. But, it was cheap.

That's not counting a recent reissue which is a different mix/version.

Wow, no votes back then for 71 Minutes? That's a heaping helping of primo Faust.
