MINOTAUR FACEPLANT IS ITS OWN REWARD (John Justen), Monday, 8 December 2008 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Euler, handy tip:
Kill the guy in the first room with a melee weapon, otherwise guards will come atcha at the sound of gunfire. OK, you do that.
Then, the other two guys are kind of close to each other. (I got this from a FAQ on gamefaqs.com, btw.) One of the guys is talking to a woman, but before you kill him, position yourself at the opening of the hallway that leads to the private rooms in the back (i.e. the hall you'd go down to kill the last guy). Snipe the guy who's talking w/ the woman; gunfire will lure out the last guy. Be a man and shoot him in the back. Mission complete, though I don't remember if you'll have to fend off any goons/cops, but if you do, just break out the Rambo.

Leee, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh and Euler, if you're stingy like me, bring up Roman on your cell and select "Car Service" or whatever; you'll get cab rides free gratis with a heaping amount of abuse from the peeved hack.

Leee, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:38 (fifteen years ago) link

started to replay this, the missions are much more fun a second time around. i don't know why.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Monday, 8 December 2008 21:40 (fifteen years ago) link

i should admit my attitude about this game is heavily colored by the fact that my xbox is crashing routinely and i need to send it in. wasting time tooling around and looking at shit is less enjoyable under the circs, and that's the whole point

goole, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:42 (fifteen years ago) link

so Leee, I know you said you got that from gamefaqs but maybe you can advise a little more: snipe the guy who's *not* in the back lap-dance room, from the hall where the lap-dance room is? Then the guy in the lap-dance room will come out but not with guns blazing, and I can slay him at will? I want to be sure I'm getting this right, before fucking it up again.

Also, I will try goole's advice of just going buck wild once, because it sounds fun.

Euler, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:43 (fifteen years ago) link

yah man i was clipping the strippers and everything, true horror. i even felt bad, after.

goole, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:44 (fifteen years ago) link

REmember that there's a door at the end of the hallway that the third guy getting the lapdance is in. If you loudly shoot the other two, he'll run out the exit and then you have to go after him in a car chase with the po-po's after you.

Seemed like I killed the first guy with melee, went to the lapdance guy next and killed him, and then quickly ran back into the club, guns a blazing for the second guy over by the stage. It took a couple of times before it worked.

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 8 December 2008 21:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Euler, to put it another way, the guy in the private room should be your last kill, let's call him guy #3. He'll be trying to escape through the door Pleasant Plains mentions after you snipe guy #2, so gun #3 down with yr SMG/shottie/pistol. It doesn't matter precisely where you position yourself, just so long as you have a direct line on both of them. This way is pretty easy, took me only one attempt after repeatedly getting murdered via other methods.

Leee, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:01 (fifteen years ago) link

ok that's clearer now. I will try these tonight.

Euler, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe i got lucky? i took a long time shooting basically everyone in the main room, then noticed another red dot on the radar, followed it out back, shot up the suv which was luckily pointed toward me (headshot!). there were cops cars right there but offing the last guy ended the mission and cleared my wanted level. i don't think i had much life left.

goole, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

thanks so much for this advice; I finally beat this mission (the strip club one)! I tried goole's approach a few times, and it didn't work. I mean, I slaughtered everyone save the strippers (who continued to walk around and dance after my holocaust, very funny but ultimately bad game design) and one of the managers, who then left through the back and I failed to catch by car. They called the cops after not too long too, which I was working with 3 stars pretty quickly.

Then I tried Leee's "snipe the guy" strategy and it took a couple of times b/c I suck but then it worked.

I fucked up the next mission, a Playboy X one where you have to take pictures of gang members and then kill one. But I'll try it again before seeking special advice or just throwing this fucking game away.

Euler, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 23:15 (fifteen years ago) link

so, how did that one go?

goole, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 05:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm bumping this for a funny messup (must be a messup?) -- went to the internet cafe for the mission where francis asks you to apply for a job. i get out of the cab and get to the door, and the place is filled with prostitues. like, filled, there were i swear two dozen of them, all trying to get out the door, doing the shoving animation. i just stood there and they all walked around me and then dispersed on the street. hilarious.

three weeks pass...

Finally caught up with this thread! Right, started playing just before Christmas but life and things have played their part in cutting down on GTA time. Are you at 100% yet Ste?

In a list because I'm lazy:

* Loving the look of it but it does feel insubstantial. Hard to spot which doors are open.
* There are parts where you think good things must be but sadly no.
* I like the occasional characters (such as the crack banker in the beginning) and like most of the support cast/actors.
* Little Jacob is impossible to understand but full of wisdom: "The higher the monkey climb up the tree the more he expose his batty hole"
* There is a sad lack of boats and helicopters. I also miss jet packs.
* Close quarter fighting is shit. I miss having a mouse to swing around quickly.
* The motorbikes are crap
* steering is too light but the actual dynamics etc of the cars are just great.
* The radio is pretty limited. The Electro is fairly crap tbh.
* There is too little variety between the boroughs. Small complaint when they all look so good but I do miss the deserts and things.
* Not enough weapons lying around and needs flamethrowers.
* Could the armour be harder to find ffs?
* MORE CLOTHES? Why? Because I'm rich, bitch!
* Auto-aim isn't fast enough and always seems to pick the wrong target and take forever to flick to the right one.
* Museum mission was great. Would do again in a heartbeat.
* Shooting while driving is painful. Thankfully most missions reach a point where they either get out of car or slow down in sad acceptance of their fate.
* MOAR HARRIERS PLZ
* Would like to steal a police chopper.
* Would like to enter airport.
* would like a pony
* Nico needs to learn to say 'NO' FFS
* Less relationship maintenance. I do not want to go dating to get out of jail perks. I'm a lone wolf baby, leave me be!

the way a game about a South-Central gangsta could turn into a Repo Man Area 51 hijinx caper with hippies and Elvis.

This, for me, is why SA was so great! Basically I find that SA was more fun that this. Sure, it's darker and there are choices but I never really have a "I would have beers with this dude" moment like I did with CJ. Possibly because, as someone pointed out upstairs, I don't get the whole "I'm a nice guy, stop beating women. You want me to kill a dude I lure out on a date? Okay." It's all a bit twisted to be honest!

Sure there's more but this thread has pretty much covered it. Not sure how to do XBox live so haven't tried multiplayer yet!

hyggeligt, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Haha, multiplayer. I was just telling my wife, "Remember that month I spent playing every night with 15-year-old's?"

•--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link

It really does not bear thinking about. I've already got enough stick about girlfriends in the game. Playing with 15 year olds might be the final straw!

hyggeligt, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 17:17 (fifteen years ago) link

A couple things hyggeligt- there are boats and helicopters. Go buy armor at the ammo shop - quit being a cheap-skate

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 17:28 (fifteen years ago) link

After playing some Saints Row 2, I'm struck by how much more difficult GTA4 is. I generally have to do GTA4 missions multiple times to complete them, and often that's meant even 10, 15 times. Yuck! I'm much less likely to want to buy the next GTA for this reason. It's just not been fun to drive to the mission giver (being careful not to run people over since if you do you get a star right away, and then it's evasion on crowded streets usually meaning more stars...), drive to the mission itself, do the mission, and then die and do it all again. If the game is supposed to have an interesting narrative, don't make it hard for me to actually do things in the game. Make it fun, and then I'll put in the 40+ hours you want me to experience. If doing quests/missions is hard work, it's not a fun game anymore, it's a slog.

Euler, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago) link

i didn't think they were that hard. too repetitive maybe

my complaints are:

too little driving and too much shooting. there was not one "get to x location in x amount of time" mission (aside from the drug delivery side missions) and those used to be a mainstay, right? too many "drive to this place and kill all the people there" stuff.

your friends are irritating, interacting with them is boring, and the rewards are useless (except jacob)

the cars drive badly, way worse than SA as i remember it. i don't know who thought the behind-and-just-off-to-the-left camera was a good idea, it isn't.

ever increasing amounts of money and nothing to do with it. no properties, anymore?! new york is all about owning property!

goole, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 17:40 (fifteen years ago) link

an the cover controls are dicked

OTFM ! TIMES A MILLION

But I prefer the driving mechanics in this one, they're gorgeous once you really get used to them.

not 100 percent yet, still 18 pigeons left. But everytime I load it now I just fuck about too much or multiplayer out.

The next game needs more rewards and more hidden missions and stuff.

I know there are boats and helicopters, just not enough of them. I also find tooling to the gun shop a bit of a pain when there should be a few more near safehouses. I've found some but there should be more maybe?

agree about the poor variation in boats and choppers totally.

there are a lot of boats but they all seem to be ported from previous versions, apart from the large Tug boat. and the coastguard inflatable is nice.

but chopper selection is poor, could be better.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Thursday, 15 January 2009 12:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I think there's an Apache on the roof of the police building near your safehouse in NE Algonquin?

ledge, Thursday, 15 January 2009 14:54 (fifteen years ago) link

What?! I must find this roof. Is that the safehouse that SPOILERRoman buysEND SPOILER?

hyggeligt, Thursday, 15 January 2009 14:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I think so. The first one you get there. The polis station is near a petrol station i think.

ledge, Thursday, 15 January 2009 15:07 (fifteen years ago) link

you get four stars as soon as you get in it, iirc. and you can't escape them!

ledge, Thursday, 15 January 2009 15:08 (fifteen years ago) link

4 mayhem that an apache can cause it would be a good death. Also if you dropped off on Happiness Island and boosted a boat maybe you could escape that way?

hyggeligt, Thursday, 15 January 2009 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I think Ledge is drunk again. For a start it's not the apache we all know and love, it's some sort of gunship with machine guns only.

it's on the cop shop NE on alonquin yes, but you shouldn't get four stars when you steal it. Probably just one star, seeing as there's always a cop stood nearby.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Thursday, 15 January 2009 17:17 (fifteen years ago) link

:(

One star? That's nothing! I still haven't maxed out stars. I keep dying!

hyggeligt, Thursday, 15 January 2009 17:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I also find tooling to the gun shop a bit of a pain when there should be a few more near safehouses.

Just call a taxi! Man, they're a total godsend. Or if you're cheap and willing to wait 30 seconds, call Roman's car service.

I once picked Brucie up in the helicopter to go to a bar, but when we came out, it was gone. u_U

Leee, Friday, 16 January 2009 22:22 (fifteen years ago) link

If you're just picking up body armor at the gun shoppe, I recommend instead memorizing two locations where you can find them. The one I used the most is on Algonquin, about 2-3 blocks away (south-westish) from the penthouse safehouse -- look for a chainlink fence on the corner of the block, there's construction going on and you drop down into it to find it. It's a pretty central location, so I pass it pretty frequently. The other place I memorized is on Alderny; starting from your safehouse, go east, north at the first street, then all the way down until you reach a T-intersection, at which you take a right. Halfway down that residential block is an alleyway -- go through that, and you'll see some chainlink fences (again!), sort of an irrigation/water overflow canal type of thing, you have to climb over that, then drop down to the right.

Leee, Friday, 16 January 2009 22:28 (fifteen years ago) link

easiest and closest body armour is just north of the penthouse safe house in Algonquin, at the end of you block just before you reach the overpass, there's a small gap to the left. squeeze down it to find the armour.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Friday, 16 January 2009 22:44 (fifteen years ago) link

(i mean the safe house on the East side of algonquin, not the playboy one)

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Friday, 16 January 2009 22:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah the no missiles apache thing sux. But I've definitely got into one on more than one occasion and had 4 unescapable stars, ie they stick with you even if you fly faaaaarrr out to sea.

ledge, Friday, 16 January 2009 22:47 (fifteen years ago) link

were you still in LOS of helicopters? i've found the police escape mechanics to be v well designed

ehhh i guess that's possible.

ledge, Friday, 16 January 2009 23:21 (fifteen years ago) link

actually i know what ledge is talking about, sometimes it will create an infinite circle of inescapable police presence around you when you're in a chopper. Sometimes, it could be a bug or it could be some strange gameplay thing I haven't quite sussed out yet.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Friday, 16 January 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago) link

I had that happen with the helicopter (apache?) I took from the airport, the stars would fade when I was out of sight but I'd stay at the centre of the police zone. Of course, it's 4 stars for being caught at the airport too.
