Anyone see Iron Maiden when they played Ayr in about 1990?

Primal Scream played too, but after i had moved to hamilton.
Ayr Pavillion, had loadsa mates who went there at the weekend.

YEAH! I was at the Maiden gig! That was Janik Jers debut tour so they did a club tour. What can I say? Best gig ever!

Used to go to tons of gigs round Kilmarnock, Troon and Ayr. I will also contribute more to this later because there's too much stuff going on round here this second.

I remember pics in the Ayshire Post showing the huge queue for tickets. I think it was one of the record shops, forget if it was the one in the sandgate or the one up near the odeon/train station.

My friend's brother was in the Iron Maiden fanclub and acquired tickets for us through that means. I can't remember how, but I remember he did queue up for hours. The tickets were fifteen quid. I remember that.

I saw Oasis at Irvine Beach in 95, that was a great gig. went with one of my old schoolfriends who had also moved up here. We stayed at his parents house and went to Jonesy's on the friday to see an ac/dc tribute band (Bon's Balls but they cancelled) with a couple of other friends i had stayed in touch with. At the oasis gig i met an old pal i hadn't seen in 6 years.

Will be interesting to see if there are other ayrshire/lanarkshire folk on ilx.

I know Cozen is Kilwinning. MaresNest is Dalry. Everything is Killie.
Jim & Marcello are from Bothwell near me.

its not there now. It was run by nuns. Elmwood Senior Secondary i think it was called. My mums from Glenmavis (inbetween Airdrie & Coatbridge) and there was no catholic secondaries there (st pats was still a primary school) so this one in Bothwell was the nearest one. My mum said most secondaries were junior secondaries that you got kicked out of age 15. Elmwood used to be a private school (at least the primary was) but it got taken over by the state (hence my mum & friends being able to go)

she thinks the convent is still there.

this would have been the 50s my mum went. School musta closed in the 70s or so.

Right then, am I right in thinking that some local metal band supported Maiden at that gig, they had a name that was similar to Valhalla iirc.

Also plz to list every local Ayrshire band that you can think of.

Azrael were a local HM band who went to Prestwick Academy. I'm sure they got a gig on the bill but not certain.

I did see Baby Chaos supporting The Wildhearts at the Glasgow Garage.

Disaster for Penguins, The Longhorns (formely Pure Mania), The Termites (still together), Southern Approach (gave one member to Baby Chaos), Thee Sherbet Fountaines, Flowers in the Dustbin, Primeval Screamers, Soceitys Rejects (sic).

Plus most of us Lanarkshire peeps were born in Bellshill probably, we know who came from there.
And I guess my hometown is technically EK and we all know which brothers came from there

I knew the guys in Azrael, it wasn't them, shit I wish I could remember the name.

I liked all of the Bellshill bands but obviously Nyah Fearties/The Rootsearching Metalbashing Fearties/The Fearties/The Collaborators were the only truly good band from Ayrshire.

Yep, the Fearties pretty much ruled.

Don't forget the Strathaven Metal Scene (LOL) ie The almighty came from there.

Motherwell gave the world The River Detectives & The Delgados.
Hamilton gave the world that public schoolboy from Mogwai aka Stuart Braithwate

I'd love to know what happened to Azrael. Did they split up after they all left school?

No idea, I guess they probably did, nice people, I helped record one of their demos at this horrible studio I worked at for a few months in Perceton (sp?)

all the other groups had to go up Cairn Table and ours got to go in the van to the Leadhills. Which was great for me as id just moved to Ayrshire from Lanarkshire. It felt like going home!

Born in Larkhall, Scotland's sectarian capital, and living right on the edge of Renfrewshire and Ayrshire, with most of my family in Motherwell and Bellshill - this thread has already opened my eyes to a local culture that has developed beyond Megabar and "the Palace."

That part of Irvine where the Magnum Centre and the beach are right beside each other is one of my favourite places in the world, it reminds me of being both twelve and being taken on days out, and being seventeen when my pals first got cars and couldn't think of anywhere fun to drive at night. I'm only in my early-twenties now so who knows what the future holds for me on those grassy knolls.

I miss being able to jump on a bus to Largs with my student ticket. Ice-cream at Nardini's, cycling round Millport, countless old people walking around - what more could you want from a coastal town?

West Kilbride has the best beaches for dog-walking but the whole area stinks of sea-weed, yes/no?

Playing Paperboy at the Magnum Centre was many a teenage boys highlight of the year.

Funny to see that reference upthread to a recording studio in Perceton. Seems like there were often little shoestring studios in tiny villages. I once went to one in Ochiltree, which was basically a room in a big old house with a four track tape recorder, a couple of mics and not much else. It was run by an unusually enterprising and perspicacious (for Ayrshire) guy who used to put on tons of local shows in Kilmarnock, Irvine and Ayr with various touring bands of the time, such as the Television Personalities, The Godfathers or whoever. Then he'd open the show with his band The Salt Cellar, who were actually a pretty good trio doing the Orange Juice/Fire Engines pop-funk thing, except about 7 years too late. There was another recording studio in Killie called Shabby Road, somehow related to the Trashcan Sinatras, which might still be there for all I know. I moved out of that part of the world 15 years ago and I've only been back to visit about three times.

The At War With False Noise label I suppose is technically from Killie too. (Al is from there)

Shabby Rd was bought and taken over by The Trashcans after they signed to whatever label it was, smart move, they also kept the rehearsal rooms open downstairs which were okay. It was a nice studio. There was even a little studio in Dalry for a while called Heaven I think.

The only time I hear people refer to Hamilton Accies sadly is when its being used as a rhyming slang for racially contentious terms, "Could you do me a favour, nip down the Hammy Accies and get us milk and juice"

I grew up in both Uddingston and Bothwell (went to Uddy Grammar innit) and rarely will you hear fond (or any) talk of the music scene there, such as it was thirty or so years ago. In my day the big local noises were Raw Deal (out of which came the McCluskey brothers) and a Fischer-Z influenced nu-romanticky group who were one year above me in the Grammar – can’t remember their name but they eventually mutated into Friends Again (and ultimately diverged into the Bathers and Love and Money). And there was Vinyl Mirror who had the songs all right but alas never became the next big thing. No idea who came after that lot but 1980 to now can’t be a blank space.

Missed this thread totally! i'm ayrshire too -- lots of bits of it, last one being Stewarton, home of baby chaos. That perceton studio was run by a friend of ours, too.

It was hilarious trying to order Peter Brotzmann records out of Impulse! Records in Hamilton back in the late seventies. Usually you waited for the old Union Street HMV Glasgow branch to have a clearance sale and suddenly there'd they all be for 99p each. Machine Gun, Fuck de Boer, Nipples...

virgin argyll st had jazz on a mezzanine, but i don't remember soundproofing

Just thinking of all the record shops there used to be in Glasgow in the early 90s. There was loads and it was great. If you couldn't find a cd you were after it was bound to be in one of the many shops and after you exhausted every one you went to Tower Records to pay £17 for it, lol.

i was talking about union st. but the more i think about it it may have been the classical dept. hazy memory.

one thing i've remembered about 80s Virgin Union St was the very top floor sold goth/punk clothes, and for some reason at one point they started selling expensive framed holograms. i was fascinated with them and would brave the sullen stare of the gothy shop assistant to go and look at them every week.

in the 90s that was a brilliant shop for tshirts.

I remember when the rock shop was through the back, I got the Alice In Chains - Sap ep in 1992 there I had been all over Glasgow for it and that was the last place I tried and got lucky. Within a few years it was an all dance music shop.

Three years ago, admittedly, but I'd guess the main record shopping event in Glasgow now is Oxfam Music on Byres Road.

Downloading may play its part but record shops already started closing when supermarkets started selling charts cds much cheaper and amazon/play.com type online stores do too.

I seem to miss every revive of this thread. Time difference maybe - I'm eight hours away from Ayrshire. Anyway, I used to go to all of those record shops at least three times a week, avoiding lectures mostly. My earliest memory of Virgin on Union St was in around 82-83. The ground floor was mostly just records. The second floor was a treat - when you came in from the stairs there was a well-known head shop with bongs, badge etc tucked over on the right. Zines, books etc were on the leftside wall. Mostly well thumbed and rarely purchased. Then 12" singles were up there. Was there a third floor at that time? That was where posters and shit like the holograms mentioned upthread were. I totally remember that also. The town centre was just insane in those days. Insanely fun and cool that is.

Does anybody here know anything about a very early Nyah Fearties appearance on an Ayrshire comp cassette called something like "Free Fall"?
Would have been around 1982.
I'd love to know more about the cassette (if it existed!). Bands, song names, label, date. A scan would be a godsend...
Working on a Scotland discography 1977-84. I had just assumed the earliest NF was a couple years later. But I'd love to get them (the most Scottish band...) in.

I have a mate in Killie who is a huge fan of the Nyah Fearties. I asked what the proper pronunciation is and he said he hadn't thought about it. He thought it was ny ah instead of NYA.
