my eternal undying jocking of all things optimo is going to make it tough for me to appreciate them objectively

but do spill, electricsound

Thee Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 25 February 2011 06:29 (thirteen years ago) link

well anyway i have personal and not nec. entirely rational reasons for really, really disliking them

Enigmatic isn't the word for it.

Anyway, fwiw, they're my favourite live band of the last three years and in the 30 odd times I've seen them, I've seen them do at least four of the best gigs I've ever been to. I was at that Offset Festival show, which was one of the harshest they played with strobes going all the way through a fearsome version of Lying. There were people hitting the floor through it... people being led out of the tent literally frothing at the mouth.

Even if you end up hating them, I'd take a punt on watching them if you can. I'd put their best shows up there with seeing PE in the 80s, seeing the Chemical Brothers at the Hacienda, watching a good Slayer show... I totally get why people don't like them but for me, live, it's currently the perfect synthesis of acid house, noise and (old school) industrial.

Chap With Wings... Five Rounds Rapid (Doran), Friday, 25 February 2011 20:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Scroll down to the factory floor bit of this supersonic review and there's a player with a live set of theirs on it.

It wasn't even a blinding gig by their standards but it should give you more of an idea than the odds and sods that they've released on vinyl.

Chap With Wings... Five Rounds Rapid (Doran), Friday, 25 February 2011 20:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Why don't people like them?

What I've heard so far has been excellent.

one month passes...

(R E a L L O V E) single is out now on vinyl and apparently has been out digitally for like a month. It's weird -- if you were to play me the two tracks blind and ask me which is the original and which is the remix, I wouldn't be sure. Anyway, both are v.v. good.

Doctor Madame Frances Experimento LLC (SNM), Monday, 4 April 2011 06:13 (thirteen years ago) link

If you acquired it where I did, be careful of the remix. There's a version floating around with two identical tracks. The Quietus had a proper version of the remix posted a month or two ago, and it's really quite different (slower tempo, more noise).

Great single, anyway!

Millsner, Monday, 4 April 2011 09:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Both sides are up on Spotify btw

ka£ka (NickB), Monday, 4 April 2011 09:22 (thirteen years ago) link

there was a cock up by the people who distributed the digital version and they put the original version on twice instead of the remix. the remix IS very different.

Jung Danjah (admrl), Thursday, 18 August 2011 01:05 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, I will put my hand up as to liking them. Saw them live by accident, too, supporting Chris Cunningham. (Which was actually an awful show, it was way overcrowded and I had a panic attack and had to leave two songs into CC's set, but FF were very good, very very early New Order in the best possible way.)

okay, i've never heard of these guys, but that optimo remix is badass. had to turn off the lights for that, instant favorite. live vid in the OP is maybe even better. moar.

contenderizer, Saturday, 18 August 2012 06:43 (eleven years ago) link

can't really hear anything in the live vid but the loop, vocals and ride cymbal - with interruptions by guitar (if that really is the guitar). amazing anyway. like the noisy electro shit more than the goth/postpunk moves.

nice moment of synchronicity - was playing Time of the Last Persecution by Bill Fay when I opened this thread, and then these lyrics from 'I Hear You Calling' came on:

I hear you calling from the riverbank
I will be coming when the air is black
All my time is lying on the factory floor
And all my time is lying on the factory floor

Some say messiah coming got to get it right
Some say messiah coming give me back my time
All my time is lying on the factory floor
And all my time is lying on the factory floor

I do wish they'd stop eking stuff out slowly and put out some proper releases though.

Kinda think they're doing it the right way! Big release will just attract loads of nonsense. They're working with some great people and getting attention from all the places I'd imagine they'd want attention from. They keep putting out good things. As mentioned upthread that recent Perc remix is woahhh

Crackle Box, Friday, 7 September 2012 10:05 (eleven years ago) link

They keep putting good things out that are so scattered it's really difficult to get enough of a chunk of their material to listen to them, when I'm in the mood to listen to them. Which would be a lot more often if there were, because they are great.

^^^ This is the most Quietus thing ever written and is so pompous its made me want to hate them. Maybe it shows FF up for the nostalgia they are, but most of what I've heard has been pretty good, if hardly earth shattering.

Matt DC, Friday, 7 September 2012 13:42 (eleven years ago) link

Jesus christ that review was just straight up bullshit - or at least the little I managed to wade through. Did they come to a point eventually? My eyeballs gave up in disgust. mh, Sunday, 3 November 2013 03:19 (ten years ago) link

This is certainly a difficult record but it's winning me over. The singer was in KaitO, a real good guitar band from about 10 years ago.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 3 November 2013 14:27 (ten years ago) link

I don't know, I tried with this but I think they're really boring. Just flat, one dimensional, seemingly using a lot of presets. To say it quickly runs out of steam would be an understatement. They barely seem to be trying by the end of the album.

Position Position, Sunday, 3 November 2013 14:30 (ten years ago) link

this album is probably good in some way

pervilege as a meme (contenderizer), Sunday, 3 November 2013 16:12 (ten years ago) link

obviously a little biased here as i put it out but "beachcombing" with peter gordon never ceases to take me to strange and bewitching places. i really hope they do another collaboration with him.

i'm still undecided about the album but that's partly because i don't really engage with albums very much. however, "how you say" blows me away and sounds monolithically great on a dancefloor.

stirmonster, Sunday, 3 November 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Sunday, 3 November 2013 19:05 (ten years ago) link

Not sure what "presets" you get on drum kits, guitars and home built modular synths tbh.

I found the album a bit of a bummer at first. Having been a cheerleader of theirs for a few years, I was pretty underwhelmed initially but I've got to say I love it now. I get the impression that a lot of people I've seen moaning about this album on tQ or DiS or wherever (not here) seem to be disappointed because they didn't turn in some indie friendly dance thing that sounded like F*** Bvttons meets Cut Copy or whatever. This album is pretty severe and works in the same way that a lot of minimal music works... loud, on drugs, on the stereo when you're not doing anything else, in a club, driving... I can't think of a worse album to have on shitty PC speakers at work or in the background while you're doing something else.

However, out of all of my favourite albums of this year so far, this is the one where I have most sympathy with people who hate it. I totally get why they do.

Doran, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:28 (ten years ago) link

man i pound this album, listen to it all the time

Doran, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:34 (ten years ago) link

Can anyone recommend a top 10 tracks?

All of their stuff sounds good to me but

Two Different Ways
Fall Back
How You Say

If you don't like those, give up, imo.

dmr, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:39 (ten years ago) link

I think maybe a lot of the vaguely confused handwringing about this album has come about from like 18 months of weird awestruck hype from a certain kind of rock hack. Maybe you have to see them live to appreciate that kind of fervour but it always struck me as over the top. But as a result a lot of people were disappointed with this when it turned out to be "just" a collection of really good Carl Craig rips.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:42 (ten years ago) link

BTW anyone who was hoping this would turn out to be rockier/more EBM might get a lot out of the Gesaffelstein record, which I've been caning alongside this all week.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:45 (ten years ago) link

loved the live clips at the top of the thread. feral, chaotic, hypnotic and cool as hell. disappointed to hear them box it up in such a timid fashion.

I'm looking forward to seeing them live again soon when I guess they may let the noise rip a bit more, but I am not at all disappointed by the album. If you can't hear how it is hard (and clean) I just don't know. Turn it up. Hard and clean. Yum.

Branwell Bell, Sunday, 15 December 2013 09:19 (ten years ago) link

That 'Drone Logic' remix upthread – well, someone else already said 'loud and clean' so I'll just restate that

cardamon, Sunday, 15 December 2013 23:10 (ten years ago) link

I've often wanted something with the intensity of Ministry's The Land of Rape and Honey that wasn't quite so try hard as that (by try-hard I mean, look at the title of the album); something like that, but that just went forward without huffling about in leather jackets and biker beards.

And also I wanted something avoided another pole, that boringness you get in a lot of generic techno and house these days. I mean, I'm sure plenty of things that hit this point exist and it's just me not knowing about them by Factory Floor just hit me as being the perfect improvement of both of these things.

cardamon, Sunday, 15 December 2013 23:14 (ten years ago) link

Came to this band because I like Peter Gordon, but totally blindsided to learn that Nikki Colk wound up there. Always thought KaitO were severely underrated, and in no small part due to her vocals, so glad to see she ended up not disappearing.
