if she's not in ur top 10 how do u explain listening to her a ton

Dr Frogbs (am0n), Thursday, 24 February 2011 17:40 (nine years ago) link

dig it; my top ten:

1. Denki Groove
2. P-Model
3. Ween
4. They Might Be Giants
5. Underworld
6. Scooter
7. Yellow Magic Orchestra
8. Happy Mondays
9. Ryuichi Sakamoto
10. The Bran Flakes

kinda surprised by this list, I guess TMBG and the Bran Flakes do put like 20-30 songs on their albums, just surprised Sakamoto ranked so high too

I'm guessing The Fall will be #1 all time at some point. It's unavoidable

it's insanity. but I guess I just don't consider her one of my top 10 favorite artists. when i go through big phases like this, it charts certain artists really high on my

first and foremost, it's manic obsessiveness

Dominique, Thursday, 24 February 2011 17:53 (nine years ago) link

my top tracks is compiled almost entirely of things i've listened to consistently over a period of years, but in the past few weeks there's one song that's beginning to creep up there even though i've only known it for that period of time. is that right? does it really deserve to be there??? (i've so far managed to resist the temptation to not listen to it and so keep the figures stable. just about.)

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 24 February 2011 17:57 (nine years ago) link

Dom, don't you know you can just turn the scrobbler off? It's usually in your task-bar... right click, exit. Turn it back on when you'd like to scrobble something "less embarassing".

I've only done this in regards of Oasis, when I had this really bizarre urge to to listen to Be Here Now and didn't want them fucking up my e-representation of myself.

It is craziness! I suffer from this crazy, too. P sure no one even looks at my (except Algerian Goalie).

I have a playlist of motivational German-language songs to put on when I ought to be doing my German homework. I've often considered turning scrobbling off for them, because they are not really my favourite songs in the world ever and I don't want my entire top 20 to be made up of them. Haven't bothered yet though.

(On the other hand, I put the playlist on every couple of weeks and I'm not completely sick of them yet, so I guess that says something for them.)

If, when I did my initial setup, I only selected iTunes as an import source for plays, is there a way to also add my Winamp history? 'Cause the resulting profile is all kinds of skewed.

I've heard about pulling the plug for a while but last time I checked they were gaining users at a high rate so I don't know about that happening soon

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 21:18 (five years ago) link

I would be absolutely devastated if they shut down.

austinato (Austin), Wednesday, 7 January 2015 02:20 (five years ago) link

How do you check to see the rate at which they're gaining users?

Position Position, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 03:24 (five years ago) link

I remember seeing that some time ago:

Could be bullshit obv and it was a bit better in my memory but still it seems to keep growing.

i'd be sad if this shut down but i assume someone else would pick up the torch for at least the personal stats component of it, which is all i care about anyway. it's really neat to have a record of my listening habits for the past 12 years, i don't need to have it social-media-ized though.

ciderpress, Friday, 1 May 2015 17:39 (five years ago) link

Imagine if they shut this down without warning, I could easily see more than a few people having a meltdown because their stats have disappeared.

I'm the reverse, I don't care about the scrobbling only the social media aspects

they ever gonna fix the iTunes plugin for this?

their "similar artists" algorithm is really really good.

i mean, the results of it is really really good. way deeper and more accurate than anything else on the net i've seen.

xxp - it doesn't work with newer versions of iTunes

frogbs, Friday, 1 May 2015 20:38 (five years ago) link

seems to work fine for me (Mac/iTunes 12.1.something)

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Friday, 1 May 2015 20:53 (five years ago) link

austinato (Austin), Friday, 1 May 2015 22:43 (five years ago) link

i don't care as much about now that less of my listening happens on platforms allowing (decent) scrobbling

dyl, Friday, 1 May 2015 22:55 (five years ago) link

Is there something more concrete about them shutting down than Dudes In A Thread Talking About It?

No, just speculation at this point.

I still hate the beta. gonna lose a lot of users when they roll it out. I've had access to the beta for 2 or 3 months and its awful. You don't even get the pic of the album cover beside the tracks now.

that's hideous. stop making everything so desktop unfriendly.
what i want from last fm is to see someone's entire music taste in one vista

cerealbar, Friday, 19 June 2015 18:33 (four years ago) link

i have no idea why they have changed it. as you say, it's hideous.

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 19 June 2015 20:36 (four years ago) link

I'm pretty bummed out about the Android app not working. I use my phone as my portable music player and virtually all my digital listening is done this way, and I really liked having it log all my songs because I use the gig recommendations RSS feed to notify me when bands I like are playing live. That's pretty much the main reason I even have a account.

Apart from the official app (which has always been shit, but at least it used to scrobble tracks), I've tried Simple Scrobbler, Scrobb, for Android and none of the bastards work.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 22 June 2015 09:38 (four years ago) link

This app has been solid the entire time on OS X:

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 22 June 2015 19:38 (four years ago) link

All I want from Last.FM is for it to log what I listen to over the weeks/months/years and to display this in list form. That's all. And the android app does not do this and never has.

boat of boats (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 09:57 (four years ago) link

The old Android app used to scrobble for me, certainly worked a lot better than the Itunes scrobbler which never worked from my ipod properly, used to randomly scrobble about 5% of songs I listened to.

Apart from scrobbling the old app was total shit though. The events list had the wrong dates on it! The further in the future the gig was, the more inaccurate the date would be. I dunno how they managed that, probably takes some effort to code something that badly.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 10:04 (four years ago) link

I think the re-design was meant to make the site more phone/tablet-friendly, as this had been introduced as a factor in Google page rankings, and they needed to maintain the site hits to retain the ad clicks.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:53 (two months ago) link

It's one of those things that I would just never stop using and would probably be low-key sad about if it went under. I've got like 13 years' worth of listening on there.

Also, for the recent noughties poll I was looking back over my loved tracks from 2007 or so and there were loads of great tunes I'd completely forgotten about

groovypanda, Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:59 (two months ago) link

biggest stats gripe atm is that the iphone app will sometimes scrobble a song 20 times after i listen to it once

btw if anyone wants to add me -

I use to log my cd/vinyl listening.

Was disappointed to find that the new Apple Music app doesn’t tell what’s been played on my phone - iTunes did.

frogbs, Thursday, 26 March 2020 21:06 (two months ago) link

Mine hadn't worked for a long time, either. Since switching laptops I've abandoned it altogether (iTunes) and haven't missed it for a moment.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 26 March 2020 21:23 (two months ago) link

had a laptop with iTunes until last year, and it was working just fine (maybe too well: it double-scrobbled every played track)

"signed a guy who used to go to great lengths to scrobble vinyl and mp3 player tracks"

I listen to a lot of SACDs with 5.1 surround sound. I have evolved this little dance where I hit play on my media center so that the rip of the album starts playing and scrobbles, and then I quickly switch the stereo over to my SACD player so I can actually enjoy the music.
