holla! yanc3blog! thanks, g!.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:38 (twenty years ago) link

Tim. I think you're wrong. The BASS is BOSS. Really. I also think the guitar sound is pretty thought out and with regards to tuning, I don't hear it. Really they both compliment each other. As for slides, FEW ROCKERS can really do this. ESP. in teh indie/punk world.
PLZ LISTEN to COUNTER EVOLUTION. FUTUREWORLD IS REALLY THE ONLY SONG THAT I CAN SEE AS BEING CONSIDERED SLOPPY, IT STARTS KIND OF FUNNY.

I AM A MUSIC PROFESSIONAL. I HAVE A MANSON AND A YAUCH.

"being out of tune is totally noize"

Whether it's good or not, though, depends on how it's done. It doesn't add anything positive to the A-Frames' music.

ddb, just listening to the first few tracks here...The guitar on "Nuclear" is not out of tune??? "Counter Evolution" is pretty good, but I think the gtrist and bass playa overplay. The instruments sound crappy because they're spazzing out and hitting the strings too hard. You can get a big ballistic sound out of your amp and control your articulations more.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago) link

I don't even know who the A-Frames are.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

Arab on Radar was another band whose music could have benefitted from less sloppiness in execution, I think.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

Which Arab on Radar albums have you heard, Tim? Soak The Saddle has a fair bit of sloppiness, but Yahweh Or The Highway is pretty tight sounding. On the other hand, The Chinese Stars are decidedly not sloppy and all of their songs sound the same.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

listening to Nuclear now.

hmmmmm, i dunno...are you talking about the bass and guitar being out of tune with each other. or the actual instruments being out of tune.

the chords (guitar) he is playing are weird...that lead thing sounds a bit wierd too. but it never struck me as "being out of tune"

Tim, have you seen them live...way more aggro than the albums.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:31 (twenty years ago) link

OK TIM...Search and Rescue sounds out of tune.

OK NOW IM GONNA GO NUTS WITH THIS. THX DOOD!

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:34 (twenty years ago) link

The guitar just sounds out of tune on "Nuclear." Maybe sometimes they're hitting the strings so hard that the notes sound out of tune even if they tuned up OK beforehand. Also, do they tune down? They might be playing with loose strings to begin with and that's contributing to the problem.

Rough Day at the Orifice was the Arab on Radar album that I had. I also saw them live once.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

Rough Day @ The Orifice = really messy, not that good :(

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago) link

arab on radar i liked because of the odd tunings.

computer cougar was better on 7"... cc < Rorschach

i've always been slightly nixied by the aframes similarity to the fall.

satisfact i could see maybe... great band... (octant was pretty dang weird tho. and in a "gee, i dunno" sort of way.) satisfact's best stuff was his more psychy-feelie... i'm gonna have pull my satisfact records out now.

msp (msp), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

I FINALLY SAID HELLO TO NICK RORSCHACH (sic?) THE OTHER NIGHT AT THE DUBLEP BBQ. THEN I GOT DRUNK/STONED.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:04 (twenty years ago) link

I thought Satisfact were way better on that first album and that "Life Abroad" single on K. They seemed directionless after that to me.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:26 (twenty years ago) link

guys, please, this is the noise board, not 90s indie nostalgia board.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

were satisfact totally different than what i remember them being??? they never made any impression on me.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago) link

From moment to moment, they alternately sounded like Gary Numan, Human League, Joy Division, etc.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:37 (twenty years ago) link

they were doing the NEW new wave thing before most.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:38 (twenty years ago) link

I have one of Matt Steinke's HOME MADE PHOTO THEREMINS.

IT RULES.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:39 (twenty years ago) link

i saw them live several times in the mid-90s, mostly playing with kerosene 454, bluetip, les savy fav, jawbox and the dismemberment plan, if i remember correctly.

my fave of the early(ish) neo-wave bands: six finger satellite!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:41 (twenty years ago) link

argh! bluetip!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:41 (twenty years ago) link

i still listen to the first Kerosene 454 album from time to time. way more than i listen to my jawbox CDs.

bluetip sux0r.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:42 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, even tho my feelings were mixed about octant, you have to admire the man's electronics wizardry. making a robot band? i mean, that's cool. etc etc.

well, it's cool to me at least.

cough.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

yeah octant were rad live. I only have the first record.

ROBOTS.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

I met the girl I lost my virginity to at a 6FS show.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:48 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, bluetip were awful. the last k454 record is great great great!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

an ex-bandmate LOVED bluetip... of course, he nonsexual-crushed on j. robbins... "he's sooo great!!!"

anything remotely connected was like sexual chocolate!

and hey...slowdime released all scars, who did some cool slurp.

Most of those are part of my "1992" thread category project.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:15 (twenty years ago) link

dude the FM Knives broke up? fuuuuck. They are one of the bands I want(ed) to see live. How verifiable is this? They are(were) super awesome. I see them as being, if such a thing is possible, an entirely modern update of the Buzzcocks/Boys/Undertones sort of sound, versus a band like the Exploding Hearts, for example, who I also really like but who are (were) frankly more throwback/retro in their stylistic execution.

the A Frames' 'Neutron Bomb' 7" is awesome, have been kinda on the fence about the other stuff I've heard from them.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:26 (twenty years ago) link

well w00dh0use is a friend/good acquaintance and when i last heard from him (this spring, i guess), he said it was pretty much over. he has said that before, tho.
