The Neptunes - classic or dud?

The new album is well worth the time. I believe the trax are identical in order. Nothing new, but since the instruments are in there, the songs get a new richness that you can't really imagine without hearing it first hand. At first spin, Lapdance seems to be identical, but the more you get into it, it feels like you're in the studio with them... tight.

There's a part in N'Sync's "Girlfriend" that sounds almost directly lifted from NERD's own "Stay Together". Nonetheless, the song's quite appealing, if a glaring example (along with what I've heard of "Wanderland") that it couldn't hurt if the Neps started coming up with a few new tricks. Like this real instrument stuff, perhaps.

The Neptunes are hot, yes! But why haven't I heard anyone mention Timbaland!!!! If the Neptunes are classic, then timbaland must be double, even triple classic. Anyway, I just wanted to remind everyone that although the Neptunes might be good, they're still a step behind Timbaland. Peace!!!!

I believe I read the "Rump Shaker" bit on www.n-e-r-d.com, though I can't find it on there now.. looks like they removed a lot from the bio page. I do remember checking the page multiple times to make sure I was reading it correctly.

Bobby D. Gray, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've given the new version a cursory audition, but the songs are virtually identical so despite the live instrumentation ya really have to listen to hear anything different if you see what I mean. It's a total joke they had to remake it in the first place but i was hoping that they might take the opportunity to really do something crazy on other ppl's turf so to speak and silence the "only one sound" naysayers, however wrong they might be. Alas, on first impressions no, same songs.

For me the appeal of the neptunes isn't so much a Timba style futureshock but that awkwardness and lack of polish... i guess it's their NERDiness: like Roots Manuva, tiptoeing the fine line of being afraid and being happy to be a dork. Repeating that sound is all a part of that, never feeling the need to be the best. But live instruments just gave them a soul draining MOR professional everydayness, and worse the pretension of SOUL...* The songs are still i dunno, catchy, but they've lost all in them that charmed me.

I read somewhere they said "neptunes is what we do, NERD is who we are". so far the NERD remake is neither, just some exec's idea of a "black rock" fad. Does it have to sound like rock to be rock? or for that matter hiphop? Look at Can Ox...

Bob Zemko, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I disagree completely. I found the new version to be different in as much as it gives a live feel to all the songs, and plays up the rock side a lot more. Sure the tunes are all the same, and for the most part so are the arrangements (though there are some nice new instrumental touches to be found), but its a different vibe altogether. If anything, a more raw one. Some of the songs sound better on the new version (generally the more mellow ones), some of them don't. Now I want a mastermix containing the best of both worlds heh heh

Also, they were excellent on Letterman the other night, completely kicked ass. Classic all the way baby.

Ben Williams, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well I think that the neptunes are one of the greatest producers today. Their unique style of beats are very rare in the hip hop industry. I listen to them everyday and can´t wait to get a new song that is produced by them. It´s cool how they combine hip hop and rock, but it does not sound like the main crossover thing. NEPTUNES forever, whereever, whenever. Peace

Basically, Neptunes produced tunes strike the same chord in folks that Teddy Riley, Marcus Miller and George Duke do! All of these people have a healthy dose of "the blues" coursing through their veins, which they use to re-invigorate the ailing music industry ;-)

If you made a CD with tunes like "No-diggity" (which is really just a modern "down south, front-porch hoedown", sans the washboard, of course), "U Don't Have To Call", "I Gotcha Money", etc., you'd see that they all have very sparse instrumentation, but you can "feel" them immediately, if you know what I mean. Kind of like the same way you can "feel" a gospel chorus :-) But if you want to "feel" the "In Search Of.." joint, you're going to have to dig out your (or your parent's) old Grand Funk Railroad albums and listen to "Funk 49", or Todd Rundgren's "Time Heals the Wounds" on the Healer album, or even Steely Dan's Aja. Why? Because, as musicians (as opposed to producers) this is what inspired (or inspires) these guys. If "In Search Of .." ends up being a commercial and critical flop, it's because people cannot fathom how someone that wrote the groove for "Shake 'Yo Ass" could possibly be inspired by a tune like "Babylon Sista" (by Steely Dan)!

However, I do agree that it is time to "retire the jersey" for the "trademark" kick drum pattern ;-)

The Neptunes also first caught my ear with SuperThug too (check my Noreaga review on the411online.com). However, now that I look back, they've been involved in tons of other projects. It's scary to think they've been around since Rumpshaker (all i wanna do is zoom-a-zoom- zoom-zoom in a boom-boom). I've been listening to the NERD cd for about 2 months now, and its the best thing I've heard in 2002. I had heard from many heads that it wasn't very good, and I scooped it at Virgin Records for only $7.99, which is half of what we normally pay for a cd in the States. Musically, the cd is like nothing I've ever heard. You can tell there are a ton of influences on the disc, most of them good. What the Neptunes lack in lyrics and vocals, they more than make up for in hooks, beats and production in general. The two were on WGCI radio here in Chicago tonight and they were saying that the album is more like a sound track for life than a typical hip-hop album. I actually even called in and asked them a few questions about the album. I asked them if that drum beat on "Tape You" was lifted from the "Miami Vice" theme song by Jan Hammer. They said that it was inspired by some Phil Collins stuff, and that its one of those beats that makes you want to air drum. I just laughed because thats exactly what I do when I hear that fast drum break.

" There is no other producer with as nearly as many hits made as the Neptunes. "

Give me a break - Phil Spector, Smokey Robinson, George Martin (maybe), Nile Rodgers, Arthur Baker, Prince, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Teddy Riley, Dr. Dre, Missy & Timbaland, and, oh yeah, Quincy Jones.

«'Q'» «ORCHID.X » ….NEW SOLO ARTIST…. «THE CANDLE CONTINUES TO BURN»

"Yo it's me ORCHIDX i am searching for the neptunes to help me do the damn thang.Read my story and check out my site and be sure to place something in my guestbook.

The Legend behind ORCHID'X: 25,000,000 century's ago there lived a race of talented species who lived in the valleys of the desert winds of Jupiter. This race was called ORCHID'S, the name was created for one specific purpose this purpose was to highlight the life and the talents of everyone of the clan members. It's believed that when an ORCHID/PERSON dies there body will explode with atoms and micro bites overflowing like a tipped over pitch of water and flow to the sky's of the moon and the stars and recuperates. One atom was missing from one body and now it's formed a powerful atom cell of light and energy. This rare atom has been exposed to darkness feelings and the worse ever music. This rare atom or enhanced ORCHID is unknown so there's an X that follows ORCHID. This means that until ORCHIDX finds his destiny he will regain his real name and meaning. ORCHIDX was corrupted a while ago but now he's ok he's getting over his past by expressing himself through music and lyrics. Until then he's ORCHIDX who was once and angel of deception but now he's an angel from the heavens.

The Reality of ORCHID'X: He's a new R&B solo artist, he's like the Romeo of 2002 he's more revolved compared to usher, Ginuwine, B2K, Imx, and Lil Bow wow. This young-cat has been through more chaos that he could ever image In his lifetime. His voice floats in uproar of warm light and a lower roar of blue mist water. ORCHIDX is so refreshing just hearing his Pop, R&B, Gregorian roar like a tiger, His chanting vocal mix, and a sequence of the style of country vocals is so awesome. He's the ocean and the sea he's the light beneath the burned candles of a black gloomy night. He's the air that you struggle to breath he's the pavement that you drag your feet he's the fire that burns in your heart he's seductive he's a creature created one of a kind. ><

You guys know who I am ORCHID.X representing LA.*TX Thank Yall...

This is less of an answer and more of a response/comment to that written by wooten_michael@hotmail.com. I couldn't agree with you more when talking about NERD's obvious influences, however I feel that you missed mentioning Earth Wind & Fire, the band that I feel that NERD's sound greatly resembles, obviously with the exceptions of there more Neptunes sounding song like lapdance, rockstar & truth or Dare. Adressing the original question, wether neptunes are classic or dull, who cares, they produce beats that people can dance to when it comes to the neptunes they are not out to be groundbreaking, they are out to make fun beats that people can enjoy. In My opinion they should keep doing what they are doing, any one who can get me to ignore ms. Spears annoying voice and mindless lyrics, and get me to dance and to one of her songs is ok by me.

The Neptunes didn't produce "Rump Shaker." Teddy produced it. Pharrell wrote Teddy's verse on it. That's how they got started

Glen Perkins, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Neptunes are HOT! Whoever had something negative to say is just upset because they can't dance to the beats or they were nerds in school and have not did a 360 like Pharell and Lee Harvey. If the Neptunes weren't producing for 1/2 of the music industry what would we be listening and dancing too? They have been around a long time and deserve all good things that come there way! As far as all the critics who say they were inspired by "this show" or "another artists song", all music is inspired by something or someone and if they had any sense of knowledge they would know that! Neptunes are literally "The Shit................................!"

WestCoastShorty, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Neptunes are brilliant, from there hip/hop music such as Fabulous - Holla Back (WOO WOO) to bein' able to change their style to work with such vocalists like babyface in his tunes 'there she goes' and the supreme 'stressed out'. There music is refreshing to the scene as they don't fear to experiment with new sounds.

I know I already answered this, but between that post and this one, I had a period where I would have said no, not classic. Not a dud, but not classic.

Now, I say:

Classic.. I've always liked them, but I was beginning to think they were getting a little stale. The new Nelly, Nore, and Clipse singles prove me wrong. They change it up just enough to keep me hooked all the time.

"I only understood why I so dislike this annoyingly catchy record when I realized the name isn't an acronym. They call themselves N.E.R.D. because nerds is what they are—nerds at their worst. Sure they're clever, but they're also as shallow as Britney Spears, who I swear they're dumb enough to want to fuck, and all they know about the world is that they deserve to run it because they're clever. Ben Folds is Richard Rorty by comparison, and though I prefer their beats to Dre's beats, once again said beats fail to render the accompanying fantasies (and realities) of sexual domination palatable (or clever) (and I'm not so sure about sexual). The final blow is this American re-recording, which substitutes live instruments for the infernal machines of the U.K. version even though the studio is the only thing they've understood deeply in their short little lives. B MINUS - Robt. Xgau

It IS an acronym. Also it is a great record. Rob, you nut.

I only know four of that ten (2, 3, 4, and 8), but they are such blinders and The Neptunes such genius that I might have to investigate the rest. There's a good article about them in this week's Independent On Sunday, touching on the two versions of the N*E*R*D album - apparently those of us with the first non-rockin' version have "something personal, a rarity". I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I'm stupid enough to have both, but you should really get Kelis' debut "Kaleidoscope" first, everything they've done since is spread like Marmite on this album.

Yeah, it's actually quite surprising how their sonic borders have actually shrunk post-'Kaleidoscope' to a much more basic blueprint. In some ways that's been very fruitful - they've really honed their funk influences, for one - but it's odd that they've avoided doing tracks with the sensitivity and melodrama of "Get Along With You" or the eerie disquiet of "Mafia". Would that be too pop for them now? Too anonymous?

I prefer their producing. Especially ODB's Nigga Please. The entire record sounds like it's pasted together fragments of random recordings of Dirty's crazy ramblings. Weird as shit. "I'm the cuntbreath asshole eater- and when I physically eat it, it only gets (buuuuuurp)" actual quote. The Syd Barret of hip-hop.

I'm v. late on this, but I just got the NERD album used a couple of weeks ago. I'm guessing I have the American release of it -- it's a promo w/ a 2001 copyright, but it sounds like it has to be the "rock" version. How can I tell for sure?

Anyway, after all the ink spilled, I have to say I was very surprised how boring this record is. It sounds VERY Grand Royal to me, all lazy '70s funk references and half-formed songs. Isn't "Rockstar" totally "So Whatcha Want"? Weird to say, but it reminds me most of Russell Simims' solo album, only not quite as good. It also has the GR thing where it seems like the primary theme of the record is "let's talk about how cool we are", with almost no substance otherwise. Love "Lapdance," "Rockstar" is fair, but beyond that, dullsville. Is this really going to turn up on some Best of lists?

Answer me.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've got conflicting opinions on the NERD album.

On the one hand, I love to listen to it, and it sounds really great.

On the other hand, the lyrics really annoy the fuck out of me, if I actually pay attention to them. Total garbage.

Of course, like I said, I really like the album. Totally conflicted.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I actually think the lyrics are one of the best parts!

Relax, girl
Sip some of my Slurpee
You don't have to lie to me
It's fly to me

Just simple stuff like that. It's not fancy but it's perfect. 'Provider,' 'Bobby James,' 'Baby Doll,' the rest! Everything other than the rapping bits from the Shay guy are great. It's perfect. I mean, what kind of lyrics do you want!

It's a classic album. Straight up and down. You can't defeat it this year. You really can't. That's just how it is. Pharrell will murder you in your sleep. He will cut your throat It's an undeniable classic. It cannot be denied.

d k (d k), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hmm...yeah, I can see the lyrics being light & fun (aside from the political commentary of "Lapdance", of course), so no big deal there. But musically, what makes In Search of... better than The In Sound from Way Out?

The Neptunes are great producers... BUT, they'll never be better than Dr. Dre. That man has done more tracks for artists than the Neps and has had many, many, many platinum plaques credited to his gifted music production. Dr. Dre in my book is the G.O.A.T!!(Greatest of all time)

You KNOW you havnt even heard all of the Neptunes' songs so you cant judge them. Oh and to that bitch who said Dr. Dre is a good producer, if he's sucha good producer, why did he have to have DJ Quik ghost produce for him on "The Chronic"? Yeah, the Neptunes are the best producers ive ever heard of, every single one of their songs could be a single in a second. All of you Neptunes haters can suck my dick, happy now? You know you wanna... puto..

How exactly do the Neps produce so many tracks? I mean, over the last, say 4 years, how many have they done? They must have some kind of template they work to, maybe diverting for some of the more out-there productions like "Grindin'", but even so, they're phenominally prolific considering the quality of what they produce. They just seemed to have discovered the recipe for pure booty-shakin'.

challops but this beat is better than "drop it like it's hot" imo:

I think a 05-present Neps comp would be a lot more interesting... obviously their output is a lot spottier, but I think the high points might actually be better than their peak era.
