Ye gods! What did Kurt *see* in this woman? Did he just have bad taste or was more mentally ill that we previously thought?

To be fair to Kurt, we (that is, the general public) have had more exposure to Courtney than he ever did in their short time together (which was what, two years?), and since her repulsiveness has only become more pronounced over time, it makes it hard to believe that she was ever considered anything more than a shrill harpy begging for attention...

as far as outward appearances go, I think she looks hella good for 38. But give her 10 more years and

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

"...anyone who dislikes Courtney Love is a "fuckwit misogynist"?"

Sounds like something Courtney (or her drug dealer - I mean "personal assistant") would say.

No Alex, I wz making a jokey and sarcastic contribution to the thread, at abt the point IN the thread where a contribution of this kind — admittedly not always sarcastic — is always and inevitably made (cf every other ILM/Courtney thread evah). I expect I wz secretly hoping to be swept aside by a veritable rush of well-respected male feminists cramming a cap on their head to prove that it sure didn't fit them nossir noway — but no such luck...

All I know about Courtney is that she will talk your ear off, she doesn't even care who you are, or where you have to be in 5 minutes. She's very egalitarian like that.

erm, I hate Courtney (okay, "hate" in the sense that you might say you "love pizza" to paraphrase Daniel Clowes in "Why I Hate Christians"; I certainly don't want her to die or anything, and if I ever actually met her I'd probably be nice to her, so maybe I should stop contributing to these threads because I can see I'm being classed with the people who REALLY hate her, yeah yeah I'd better end this bit now) because she punched Kathleen Hanna, who I have a totally mad pash for. what does this make me?

s: my logic in posting the chaki bit wuz that for a woman who PLAYS on sex so consciously, it seems the nicest thing you can do is simply admit attraction and thus grant the hold over you she desires.

i think that part of the courtney-hate is, along with the typical double-standard virgin/whore etc. stuff the fear of a woman who attempts to assert her sexuality in a power relationship.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 06:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can't it just be because, just maybe, she's really obnoxious?

Clarke B., Wednesday, 5 February 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

no because male rock stars can be twice as obnoxious as her and they get applauded for it. (I'm not saying that's you, Clarke B.) When Yngwie unleashed the fucking fury the hatas were like "wow that's the best thing he's ever recorded" - when Courtney does it the hatas just hate

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 07:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

dude if you went to the metal sludge board people were like "yngwie is a fucking asshole dipshit cockmangler" and if you go to the hole board right now people are like "yay courtney is awesome"

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 07:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think that part of the courtney-hate is, along with the typical double-standard virgin/whore etc. stuff the fear of a woman who attempts to assert her sexuality in a power relationship.

i hardly think that applies to me. i even like obnoxious women. i wish more women would fart in public and shit like that. i just don't like courtney. she doesn't seem like the kind of person i can trust. it comes down to that.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 09:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Di's right. I wish people would stop saying a double standard is being applied to CL. Not with me it isn't. CL has a very well-deserved reputation as a liar and a thief in many of the cities she lived in in the '80s.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 13:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

You certainly don't have to be a misogynist to hate this uniquely untalented and abrasive woman. It doesn't even "help to be one"; I don't even think of her as a woman.

matt riedl (veal), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Eesh. Y'all must hang out with Courtney a lot more than me. Her being obnoxious just doesn't have much impact on my social life. Live Through This was a great record when it came out, and, gee, it still is. But hey, I even like "Boys on the Radio" (if Billy Corgan really wrote that whole album, how come it's better than any of his?).

Jesse Fox, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

...to hate this uniquely untalented and abrasive woman...
I actually don't hate her, I don't even think she lacks talent. But I do understand WHY someone WOULD hate her. You have to admit this though: Yoko Ono's singing never got any better. Courtney Love started out with formless horrid shrieking (Pretty on the Inside), went to cringingly bad howling (Live Through This) to merely off-key snarling (Celebrity Skin); I wouldn't say her voice/singing is great, but she has improved. At this rate, she'll sound like Sarah MacLachlan in roughly 2 more albums.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, I think Yoko Ono wipes the floor with Courtney Love, hands down. Courtney will never make an album as adventurous and rewarding as "Fly". Nor will she ever make any surprisingly awkward disco/Japanese-shrieking songs. Yoko wins just on the strength of having actual ideas...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Ye gods! What did Kurt *see* in this woman?"

Courtney = foxy

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 February 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

that's so sexist Killian. Obviously, Kurt must have been attracted to her rapier-like wit, her dazzling musicianship, and her impeccable good taste.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 February 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know Courtney can be an attention-seeking irritant sometimes, but she's hardly the devil incarnate. Sure, she wasn't as talented a songwriter as Kurt, but he was pretty self-absorbed and selfish himself, to be 100% honest about it. I don't think Courtney-hating is down to misogyny, but I think because people prefer Kurt's music, they try and make out that it was Bad Old Courtney who corrupted innocent St.Kurt. It's not so much to do with her gender, more to do with the gap in talent between her and her husband.

I agree, she's a bit of a fool sometimes.But I wouldn't HATE someone, because they're loud and annoying.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 February 2003 23:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Or maybe her sense of humor?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 6 February 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

All this Courtney-bashing is a pathetic attempt to avoid the most important point of all: SHE HAS TERIFFIC BREASTS!

See this month's Q for further evidence...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 February 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

I hate her the way I hate Stan Lee. Everything either of them has done has been on the backs of other much more talented and interesting people. It's all about status, money, and power. It's people like that that make the world almost unbearable to live in.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 7 February 2003 00:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

like you would give a shit if some male musician was "trustworthy" or not

do you know anything about me and how i judge people? no. and since courtney love puts her personality so out there, her personality is there for me to judge as i would judge anyone i knew personally. i would judge any male musician in exactly the same way. me and my female friends have committed ourselves to changing the position of women in rock music, i'm even writing a fucking dissertation on it, so do your homework before you run around accusing feminist women of misogyny.

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 7 February 2003 00:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

so do your homework before you run around accusing feminist women of misogyny.

this is a stupid thing to say, you don't know anything about me and i shouldn't expect you to. but really, do you accuse EVERYONE of misogyny if they don't like a (singular) woman?

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 7 February 2003 00:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hmm.. di, I am feminist myself - what would you like to see happen re: women in rock music ? I certainly wish there were more, & that rock in general was better, and as for CL's place.. I suppose what drew me to rock back during the grunge days was that it wasn't supposed to be polite, well-behaved, tasteful, any of those things. So I get a kick out of some of her loopy behavior. But then, I was a huge fan of the music first, I was in high school & already liked Nirvana and was actually disinclined to appreciate Hole - basically didn't want to like them at all. And I found I essentially disagreed w/those who rate KC's talent far and above, since Hole always got to me a lot more than Nirvana did.

daria g, Friday, 7 February 2003 02:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"me and my female friends have committed ourselves to changing the position of women in rock music"

Out of interest, what do you and your female friends think Ms Love has done to to / for the position of women in rock music?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 7 February 2003 12:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah daria i completely agree that i wish there were more women in rock music. while i think its great that courtney os out there doing just that, (and i do think shes a talented songwriter, well specifically earlier hole). so in that respect she is useful for feminism: as a woman visibly making rock music to inspire other women. but on the other hand, having bitch fights with riot grrrls is hardly very productive for women in rock, abusing other human beings, no matter who you are, ain't cool.

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 7 February 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago) link
