i think even the people who make the show have been pretty upfront about the fact that they started with an idea of troy the character as he was written in the pilot and from there have tailored it more to glover's personality/talents, but i think they've done a good job of making it a gradual development of the character and not a total retcon.

The fact that Reading Rainbow is now relegated to nostalgia kinda pisses me off. There should be new episodes forever, man.

Former executive producer LeVar Burton announced on his Twitter feed on March 19, 2010, that "Reading Rainbow 2.0 is in the works."

Oh cool. THANKS WIKI!

Keep on the good work! (R Baez), Tuesday, 22 February 2011 00:55 (thirteen years ago) link

A few years ago I was home during the day and had the tv on PBS. "Reading Rainbow" came on, and I'm like, "I didn't know they still did this! How cool!" But as the show started, I discovered it was a rerun from the late 80s about "Night Stories" w/a vinyl spinning overnight lady DJ starring w/Lavar in the framing intros.

i don't know what reading rainbow is, but it doesn't seem that jock-troy would have been moved to tears about it...?

Troy was a jock in late high school, 10 years after he would have been a sensitive kid into a storybook TV show. He didn't like being a jock, but it gave him a sense of belonging and self-esteem that he found supportive at the time. ergo still sensitive kid inside.

ha Big Bang Theory is running an ad about how this week's episode might feature LeVar Burton (but probably won't)

!!!ZEITGEIST!!!

The campaign to get J.J. Abrams to cast LeVar in the next Star Trek movie starts... NOW.

behind the scenes fun. Features more LeVar action.

Also, finally watched this ep and quite enjoyed it. They went to some pretty dark places and I'm wondering how far they'll go.

Enjoyed the fact that I like it when the writers' and showrunner's preferences bleed thru the characters. If you were of a certain age in the 80s, having levar burton on your show really is something to freak out about.

kinda feeling history mayne on the troy staring thing, tbh

ullr saves (gbx), Tuesday, 22 February 2011 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah the staring was the least funny thing about the Troy/LeVar stuff imo. although it fit in that just having someone stare instead of writing a joke is exactly what mockumentary-type sitcoms do.

some dude, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 13:46 (thirteen years ago) link

p much

ullr saves (gbx), Tuesday, 22 February 2011 13:52 (thirteen years ago) link

The staring was funny mostly because LeVar had so much patience with it.

Wacky Way Lounge (Evan), Tuesday, 22 February 2011 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I just think its kind of funny that of all the silly things about this show, history mayne suddenly picked Troy's fascination with Levar Burton to draw the line. "Secret gardens with hidden trampolines? Fine. The school turning into zombies? Okay. Troy loving Levar Burton? No WAY would that happpen, he's a jock!"

rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 22 February 2011 14:51 (thirteen years ago) link

in a sense hm is right since the show seems to strive for human behavioral realism even tho things in the show's universe can be totally crazy (Harmon has talked about this a few times). he's just totally wrong here where the behavior is totally consistent to the character

Troy staring IS SO TOO funny

no, no, the secret garden trampoline wasn't too funny. the zombie thing was aight. plausibility wise, i guess the main thing is the staring being unfunny, not so much the character consistency. but the events of the episodes don't have to interfere with that.

there were things i did like in the episode, even in troy's arc!

the britta-vs-jeff bit was funny as fuck. i just prefer people zinging each other to any crap about shirley learning to trust people/anything to do with chevy chase's 'issues'/actually addressing abed's character's sources in his upbringing

I'm debating starting to DVR Perfect Couples and Outsourced just to make sure I get to see the closing credit gags. I haven't seen a 30 Rock credit gag all season.

see if there's a setting to extend the recording by 5 mins...that's what I like to do just in case.

god outsourced is so terrible. i can't even watch it. cringe cringe cringe.

was actually enjoying the new sitcom on cbs with american pie dude and scrubs/himym lady. and jack black wannabe guy who was on the failed fox show. plus, martin starr was on last night as the next door neighbor and i hope he becomes a semi-regular. (lizzy caplan apparently was on the pilot for this show.)

Eww Mad Love? Imo that show is like going to a strip club where strippers get dressed. It's How I Met Your Mother with no LOLs

what's real funny is how much Jason Biggs looks and sounds like Josh Radnour these days.

oh no its pretty bad but it was watchable last night. but mostly it just made me wish that someone would give martin starr his own sitcom.

scott seward, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 18:58 (thirteen years ago) link

that jack black guy is really annoying.

scott seward, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 18:58 (thirteen years ago) link

and to be honest i never liked the scrubs woman. i didn't like anyone on scrubs.

Mad Love is like an exercise in how much more boring Mike & Molly could be if it was about pretty people

some dude, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

also Judy Greer seems to pick the worst sitcoms to be in....shame cuz I like her

angel of debt!!! monarch to the kingdom of the Fed... (San Te), Tuesday, 22 February 2011 19:00 (thirteen years ago) link

i can't watch mike & molly. despite my long-time love for swoosie kurtz. the two main guys on mike & molly are almost completely unwatchable. the cop buddies.

scott seward, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 19:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I like Sarah Chalke fine, but I definitely don't want to see her on this show.

I liked that Miss Guided show, which also had Chris Parnell.

what I want to know is, who else is willing to admit that they find Perfect Couples funny

DJP, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

i've generally gotten at least a couple laughs out of each episode, although a lot of the time it falls kinda flat

some dude, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Perfect Couples, last week, actually made me laugh a few times after swearing it off the week before. Also, Sarah Chalke on this Mad Love show made the similarities to a washed-out HIMYM 100% more obvious and I wonder what they were thinking in casting her!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 22 February 2011 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link
