tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 17 February 2011 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link

btw is it just me or does all this goofy hip-hop menswear slang come off as a bit -- minstrel-y?

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 17 February 2011 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

or idk do i just not listen to enough hip-hop to get it?

thighs bigger than your head -- rarely updated, which is a shame because i fall squarely into the "big dude with thick legs" demographic

i listen to a lot of hip-hop and to me.. somehow i doubt that in real life, every sentence they utter is full of exaggerated hip hop slang? maybe it originated with one menswear blogger who actually does talk like that, and everybody else is copying his use of language. and a few months/years from now some of them will step back think, holy shit, i sound like a fool..

elmo, this is the tumblr i meant: http://suitsandboots.tumblr.com/

also can i just say, speaking of menswear blog world.. the concept of '1,001 rules for my unborn son' just disturbs the living hell out of me? i know it's partly just a catchy title/marketing gimmick but COME ON, MAN. it makes me hope that said son turns out to be a hippie feminist living on a commune in vermont or something. also what if his son is gay. i mean, i'm sure the author is a decent, stylish, well meaning person and all but what a reactionary. maybe it just throws into relief this vibe i get from some of the menswear blogs, which is that women should really be betty draper only nicer

daria-g, Friday, 18 February 2011 06:18 (thirteen years ago) link

eh i know -- like it's untimely just a weak lifestyle blog styled with this faux wisdom; "1001 arbitrary gender laws for my unborn son" really -- it gets to be a little self-parodic

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 18 February 2011 12:37 (thirteen years ago) link

like is he writing to a purely theoretical future offspring or is there some unfortunate fetus that's due to receive these awful lessons?

there really was an unborn son. presumably born, now. I think he's from DC and got profiled on some local sites.

awesome. no skinny ties?

did you find the vintage j press at thrifts? i miss that so much about RI. the best thrift stores. though the last time i tried savers it was realllly disappointing. but back when i lived there and had time to really look, i'd find scottish cashmere, 40's jackets, vintage YSL rive gauche, all sorts of stuff

daria g, Monday, 25 April 2011 02:15 (twelve years ago) link

plenty of skinny ties, it's all going up on the blog in time. i found 2 of the j press at a community thrift in n kingstown, and one at the boston archdiocese charity shop in plainville ma. i like savers a lot but they get picked over really fast and they can be overpriced but somedays are good, some are bad, that's how it goes

i mean good for those guys but lol @ their style/editorials

based god #swag #lilb (Lamp), Friday, 19 August 2011 00:23 (twelve years ago) link

ha. i'm currently reading that article. most of the stuff is way too costume-y, but if they toned it down by like 500% and added SF dirt to the mix, that's kinda how i dress

jaxon, Friday, 19 August 2011 02:43 (twelve years ago) link

i actually don't dress anything like those guys, but i think 'dirty urban prep' is a pretty good descriptor

jaxon, Friday, 19 August 2011 02:58 (twelve years ago) link

well i feel like 'if they toned it down by x% and added some y than youll have described p much like every 'stylish' dude in urban north america so

pennywise #foolish (Lamp), Friday, 19 August 2011 02:58 (twelve years ago) link

you do have a point, mr pencil

jaxon, Friday, 19 August 2011 03:20 (twelve years ago) link

i like SE, i respect the style tho they're definitely a overhyped at this point. i think their content is actually pretty well considered compared to a lot of other style blog bullshit.

also i know at this point it's hard to tell what's an actual real life street style shot and what's an editorial styled / staged to resemble such, regardless i think it's kinda silly to dismiss their editorial stuff as 'costumey' or ott because, well, isn't an editorial the appropriate format for costumey, ott looks?

not gonna defend brooklyn circus dude, tho, dude looks ridiculous and believe me it takes quite a LOT of look for me to say that

elmo argonaut, Friday, 19 August 2011 03:29 (twelve years ago) link

i really want someone to reconsider proportion and volume in menswear tbh i dont care how 'costume-y' their looks are i just think theyre tired. tailoring, prep, fabrics blah blah blah its all other ppls ideas yknow

pennywise #foolish (Lamp), Friday, 19 August 2011 03:33 (twelve years ago) link

yup i mean i hope the day is approaching when fashion dudes will stop thinking that showing off their ankles 94/7 is a dashing look

elmo argonaut, Friday, 19 August 2011 03:38 (twelve years ago) link

socks are back in

jaxon, Friday, 19 August 2011 03:49 (twelve years ago) link

i don't even mean just the sockless thing, i mean like hemming pants with a deep break as opposed to cropping them at the ankle

elmo argonaut, Friday, 19 August 2011 03:54 (twelve years ago) link

i like those dudes.

also like the brooklyn circus dude in that photo!

phil-two, Friday, 19 August 2011 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

haha i mean i try to be open minded and everything but i just can't with that camo

elmo argonaut, Friday, 19 August 2011 16:55 (twelve years ago) link

really? its just camo? or you mean the cherry red + camo? i think he looks awesome tho.

haha hate to know what you'd think of the ridiculous things in my closet then.

phil-two, Friday, 19 August 2011 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

honestly idk, it's hard for me to put my finger on what's buggin me, i think it's the mashup of newsboy / schoolboy / cowboy / soldier elements and then with the alligator watch band and the turquoise rings -- it's all too much in too many different directions imho

and you know, that would probably all be okay with me, if not for dudes super-serious demeanor! lighten up a little, u know?

When You Assume…

OCTOBER 12, 2011
by JESSE

Please don’t assume:

That I think you should dress like me.

That I write exclusively to promote my own specific, personal aesthetic thesis.

That I think you should buy everything we feature on this site.

That I will think less of you if you don’t buy something we feature on this site.

That I expect people to spend more money on their clothes.

That I believe one aesthetic fits all.

That I think a wardrobe should be purchased all at once, at retail prices.

That I think everyone should wear a tie.

That I’m judging you.

OK? OK.

Let’s be friends.

what's good in 2017? looking for men's/androgynous-all-purpose content that avoids the omnipresent How To Dress Like A Gentleman adult-cosplay oppression which is so uncomplimentary to my tender cazh scruff soul

four months pass...

ogmor's post above keeps on popping into my head as being of continuing relevance and importance.

i never want to hear or see the word sprezzatura again. what are the options?

Fizzles, Monday, 10 July 2017 08:00 (six years ago) link

I'm just following a few japanese dads on instagram ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ogmor, Monday, 10 July 2017 13:44 (six years ago) link

probably not what you want but I like http://dieworkwear.com/ for figuring out how to transition from just suits to a casual amalgamation of things. and I like http://putthison.com/.

those are both probably sprez-heavy site though.

also they only talk about really expensive clothes, but I just hope to find them in thrift stores or on ebay.

I guess I'm still in #menswear world, but I know it will pay off someday.
