It's going to sound like Asian Dub Foundation.

God, that is a terrifying thought.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

The cover looks kind of Black Metal, maybe that's where they're going.

It's gonna sound like latterday Anathema, don't kid yrselves

acoleuthic, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:21 (thirteen years ago) link

there is no format that can realistically compete with CDs in terms of sound quality

Any MP3 over 192kbps is fine with me.

From wikipedia

The name of the new album relates to an oak tree in Wiltshire’s Savernake Forest, thought to be around 1,000 years old.[4] The forest lies around three miles away from Tottenham House, a listed country house where Radiohead recorded part of In Rainbows. The tree is a pollarded oak, referring to an ancient technique for harvesting timber for fencing and firewood. The phrase also appears in the 23rd chapter of the Qur'an.[2]

$15 for .wav files is such bs.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't find any reference to the 'King of Limbs' in the Qur'an because there isn't one. Whoever wrote that got confused. After searching for 'King of Limbs' via google, they probably arrived at a [1] wikipedia page about the Qur'an which mentions a commentator 'Ibn Kathir' who used the term to expand on a verse. He described the heart as being 'the king of limbs' while explaining his understanding of the Qur'anic term 'Al-Khushoo'.

The site of al-Khushoo is in the heart and heart is the king of the limbs, so if one intends to pray wholeheartedly the limbs will follow the heart.

So it's going to be their pastoral hauntological album then..

Davek (davek_00), Monday, 14 February 2011 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

That or they're going back to their roots.

Moka, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Album cover features surprise cameo by Slimer.

Yeah that seems pretty expensive considering the mp3s are only $9; does it really cost $6 more in bandwidth to transfer? Come on man

frogbs, Monday, 14 February 2011 19:17 (thirteen years ago) link

uncompressed wavs are admittedly pretty giant

bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Monday, 14 February 2011 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Wikipedia says the average price paid for In Rainbows was £4 (based on a survey of 3,000), and I was sure I saw somewhere else that the average was $5... Regardless, it seems inaccurate to assume they came up with those prices from In Rainbows data

Fellini.Kuti, Monday, 14 February 2011 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link

just looking at the files for one song on my record here - the 320kpbs mp3 version is 10.8 mb, and the wav version is 47.9 mb

They're finally releasing "Follow Me Around" in some form? Interesting...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 February 2011 19:24 (thirteen years ago) link

This site says the avg. for those who paid was $6, but only 38% of people paid anything.

Fellini.Kuti, Monday, 14 February 2011 19:26 (thirteen years ago) link

it's a song about twitter. the chorus contains the line "please rt, please rt"

acoleuthic, Monday, 14 February 2011 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Whether or not this is any good at all, or overpriced or not, the one definitely fantastic thing about it is that it's released on a Saturday.

Although UK music releases are now all on a Monday and have been for ages - SOME OF US CAN REMEMBER when new records were released on a Friday.

If I recall correctly (although I do so increasingly infrequently).

But there was, then, the added excitement of getting a new record just in time for the weekend.

And Monday is far too far from the weekend, and from the first opportunity for many people to get a decent chance to listen to new stuff.

There are 6 other days of the week - at least - that would be better than Monday for music being released.

Saturday is, undoubtedly, one of these other days that is not a Monday.

Be nice to hear Follow Me Around after years of crappy live versions and a cobbled together version from Meeting People is Easy.

a radiohead album full of 8-minute songs runs a very high risk of being my album of the year, and I'm not ashamed to say that

acoleuthic, Monday, 14 February 2011 20:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I was about to say...there could a few 5-minute plus-ers

Davek (davek_00), Monday, 14 February 2011 20:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Longer Radiohead songs could potentially fall into two categories: an extension of the song suite multi-part epic ala Paranoid Android, or a more Krautrock derived gradual build or trance.

Gah I'm fumbling around in the dark here..

this only further increases my suspiscion that it is a song-by-song reinterpretation of Rush's Grace Under Pressure

I'm getting the mp3 version, but if this were true, I'd definitely shell out the $50 for the vinyl version. Hopefully Radiohead is at least reading this thread and getting some awesome ideas for their next LP.

Moodles, Monday, 14 February 2011 21:18 (thirteen years ago) link

FWIW, here's the digital fulfillment company Radiohead is working with: http://sandbag.uk.com/

Placed my order for the 320 version. I'm through with physical objects.
