"peaches" in bed stuy has got some good nu-americana or whatever you wanna call it--good soul food/comfort dishes made w/ local organic ingredients. waiter and hostess were really nice; ricotta was delicious. good fries and sandwiches.

finally went to the red hook soccer fields. food was great and the lines weren't the crazy hassle I was expecting so all in all it was an A+. had ceviche, pupusas (pork, jalapeno, cheese) and a pork huarache

also went to Tia Pol, v. good but always pretty crowded

I had this same meal on saturday. also the best horchata i've had in nyc.

mizzell, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:16 (fifteen years ago) link

good to hear. things were a complete mess when we went; food (save for the ceviche) wasn't the usual deliciousness, either.

lauren, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link

my one mistake in our red hook odyssey was that I forgot to go to the liquor store with all the small batch bourbons (LeNell's). been meaning to check it out.

dmr, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:50 (fifteen years ago) link

me too! we meant to go after eating, but we wasted so much time waiting in line that we had to hurry out of there.

lauren, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:52 (fifteen years ago) link

aw i used to live two blocks away from lanell's. it was dangerous in many ways.

i read that the store was losing its lease and having a hard time finding a new location... i wonder what the latest is.

lauren, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link

hey i was in red hook this saturday eating pupusas too!

gr8080 (max), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link

i want to say this without sound like THAT GUY but i dont know how--are the trucks in red hook really that big a deal?? there were like six of those at every farmers market in LA.

gr8080 (max), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link

mexican food that is available all over the place in LA is a big deal in NYC, yes.

mizzell, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 21:40 (fifteen years ago) link

great dinner at blue hill last night. i felt like every dish i had involved corn in some way but i was OK with that. girlfriend's turkey was probably the best turkey dish ive ever eaten... cooked to perfect softness in some kind of corn/pancetta/tomato puree. egg/corn/mushroom for my starter was the highlight--honestly i may have been 'disappointed' by my lamb which was overpowered slightly by the anise and mint pesto... but thats only if i was looking for something to complain about. waiter recommended a great bottle of wine, and they started us off with some fantastic little cherry tomatoes.

Mohammed Butt (max), Saturday, 20 September 2008 13:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I really want to go back to Blue Hill at Stone Barns -- maybe just for the more affordable 3 course lunch.

Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Saturday, 20 September 2008 13:54 (fifteen years ago) link

take me

Mohammed Butt (max), Saturday, 20 September 2008 13:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh actually I guess it's a 4-course lunch. Sunday only, $68.

Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Saturday, 20 September 2008 13:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Weirdly, it looks like the NYC one is actually cheaper than Stone Barns.

Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Saturday, 20 September 2008 14:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, it's hard to compare because Stone Barns only offers fixed price right now and the menus aren't available.

Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Saturday, 20 September 2008 14:02 (fifteen years ago) link

two courses + dessert + wine + tip will run you more than $70/person at the village one

The Smoke Joint and its sister sammich/moonshine cornershop, Lil Pig, are like the most successful thing in the neighborhood right now. Smoke Joint makes a meeeaaan basket of fries that made me very happy yesterday. Lil Pig started out as strictly lunch, but since the owners were getting drunk there at night, they bottled some house spirits, renovated the bar seating and adjoined the space with the Smoke Joint right next door. Now both places are boppin late. This is half a block down from me, so i'm pleased.

u should check out peaches surmo--theyre working out some kinks but as an experience its great--and when the food is on, its on

i might check out their brunch today aksh

Mohammed Butt (max), Saturday, 20 September 2008 15:10 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i would love to. this place had to get through their kinks as well, but it was worth it.

Surmounter, Saturday, 20 September 2008 15:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Blue Hill is the best. I want to go to Stone Barns at least to eat in the cafeteria.

gabbneb, Saturday, 20 September 2008 15:11 (fifteen years ago) link

lets organize an ilx field trip and rent a dining room

Mohammed Butt (max), Saturday, 20 September 2008 15:13 (fifteen years ago) link

the nyc blue hill is sooooooooooo good. i like the atmosphere, as well - sedate but not fussy.

re: redhook ballfields: not sound like a different kind of "that guy," but the set-up now is nothing like it used be. there were more vendors, more people cooking, a more communal picnic kind of vibe. the way it is at the moment is basically a bunch of people waiting in line at lunch trucks, and i can see why you were underwhelmed.

lauren, Saturday, 20 September 2008 15:50 (fifteen years ago) link

oops - that should be "not to sound..."

lauren, Saturday, 20 September 2008 15:50 (fifteen years ago) link

i think we ate at smoke joint during the working-out-the-kinks phase. the only thing that i really enjoyed was the coleslaw.

lauren, Saturday, 20 September 2008 15:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Hecho en Dumbo was surprisingly good -- similar style food to Bonita but better and even, I think, slightly cheaper.

takeout in sunnyside/woodside? i'm in the area dogsitting for a few days. alternately: any kind of fun/specialty grocery shopping where i could make some fancy dinner? i don't have class til thursday this week (thank you, jewishes!) so i can cook in the evenings if i want.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 04:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Sripraphai.

ian, Monday, 29 September 2008 04:20 (fifteen years ago) link

yes but that is no delivery :( however, if anyone would like to join me there for dinner i am in!

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 04:33 (fifteen years ago) link

went to aquavit the other night, on a rare pricey-restaurant excursion. it was pretty good. totally delicious butternut squash soup (with tiny marshmallows in it). good fish dishes.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 29 September 2008 04:43 (fifteen years ago) link

(and the actual aquavit was good too. i got a flight of 3: an anise-carraway, which i guess is sort of the traditional preparation; a lingonberry; and a mango-lime-chili pepper that was heavy on the chili pepper, woo.)

tipsy mothra, Monday, 29 September 2008 04:47 (fifteen years ago) link

marshmallows in soup is kind of blowing my mind.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 04:49 (fifteen years ago) link

i silently gasped when i read that too, yeah

isn't the candy-in-haute-cuisine-even-savory kinda old hat by now?

gabbneb, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Tehresa, I suggest Han Ah Reum in Woodside, near Roosevelt Avenue and 61st St. It's part of a Korean grocery store chain, and you can buy produce to cook up, or just get prepared stuff like kimchi rolls.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:33 (fifteen years ago) link

marshmallows in soup is kind of blowing my mind.

there were just a few, clustered in the center. they were dusted with something, maybe nutmeg. i expected them to be, i don't know, fancy croutons or something. but they were really good with the soup.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:45 (fifteen years ago) link

marshmallows and starchy autumnal foodstuffs go great together (cf. also sweet potatoes)

donna rouge, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I am particularly fond of marshmallows in casserole dishes, usually of the Jello variety.

Pillbox, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:48 (fifteen years ago) link

isn't the candy-in-haute-cuisine-even-savory kinda old hat by now?

yeah i think aquavit is somewhat from that wave, adapted for scandinavian purposes. not that there was a lot of trickery, just a few touches here and there. the soup would have been delicious without the marshmallows, but they did give it a sort of kick.

xp: yeah it very much seemed like a nod to sweet-potato casserole type things. which i'm an unapologetic glutton for.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I was thinking about thanksgiving yams etc. I think it's that having them in soup makes me think of hot chocolate and my brain is having a weird time of it all.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 05:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Also I was never into the marshmallow yam casserole so I think I'd rather just have a lovely simple soup that doesn't feel the need to apologize or supplement with marshmallows. Lol soup psychology.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 05:55 (fifteen years ago) link
