Seriously, Jordan, after the first three-ish photos you posted, none of them contain unusual amounts of teal OR orange.

Let Me In owns this thread

Gukbe, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 05:56 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't agree -- i mean, somehow (a coincidence?) 80% of the extras in the background of these scenes happen to be wearing teal or orange?

http://i56.tinypic.com/16kaww5.png

i mean a totally classic random sample here of people wearing all different color shirts at the chuck-e-cheese

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2011 05:58 (thirteen years ago) link

So the problem is with the wall color of a Chuck-E-Cheese in a movie? Of the shirt of a random background guy?

I assume this thread is meant as a complaint. If it's just meant as observation, then I gently and politely do not care.

And that means...?

I don't think the issue is as much with costumes and set decorations as it is with the post-production colour correction.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:06 (thirteen years ago) link

that it looks fucking retarded in succession

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:07 (thirteen years ago) link

it's clearly an aesthetic choice & it's a terrible one

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:08 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think the issue is as much with costumes and set decorations as it is with the post-production colour correction.

I understand, that's ostensibly the trouble brewing here. The reason that particular palette is used so often is because the flesh tones remain reasonably believable, but the blues opposite those tones stand out in high contrast. It's all about making the blacks blacker, I think. It's a fashion, it will fade, and movies from this time period will be recognizable for that particular look.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:13 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not a bad color combination, I don't think. I have much more of a problem with the obsession with making the blacks as black as the cover of "Smell the Glove," and that's not just a movie problem. Every "glossy" computer monitor nowadays has it, as well.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:16 (thirteen years ago) link

still, all of those jpgs pale in comparison to the scene they showed on conan -- ill try & get some shots w/ my phone but srsly y'all should turn it on in like 20 mins

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it's that teal and orange are opposites on the colour wheel (or something like that). they make each other 'pop', as it were. that's why they do it. I blame Ridley Scott.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:22 (thirteen years ago) link

yes that is why

I have debunked that blog post before, elsewhere on ILX, to the best of my ability, and I don't care enough to dig it up.

Point is, it's a silly thing to get up in arms about.

"It's teal and orange and it makes me ANGRY!" Whoa whoa, easy there. The artform of film will survive this.

They're not even trying to hide it in Cedar Rapids. Everytime the commercial comes on, my brain starts doing a "teal & orange, teal & orange, teal & orange" mantra:

I watched "Hot Tub Time Machine" last night, and yeah, ok, the teal-and-orange-ness of it was really extreme. Also, I didn't laugh that much and found it vaguely depressing, which is a much bigger problem than the color scheme.

Dude, teal and orange is all over that fucking picture. You can argue this is whining or whatever, but don't minimize the teal and orange MANIA to which we are all slaves.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 17 February 2011 05:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the "teal & orange" thing is like when you learn the meaning of a new word, and then suddenly you hear and notice that word in print everywhere. Even though they were always there.

Except this "word" is a painfully overused one that was invented recently, and is going to date every fucking movie it touches.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 17 February 2011 05:52 (thirteen years ago) link

ok maybe that metaphor got mixed along the way

I said that myself upthread. Can't deny that at all.

There are degrees of this, too. It seems like with romantic comedies that they like to make sure that there is a significant amount of orange and teal in a frame, and they just intensify the pre-existing tones. With thrillers, they drag all shadows and neutrals into cyan/teal (even if they weren't teal to begin with), and then drag highlights to orange. You can see this really clearly on the trailer for that new Liam Neeson movie with January Jones (can't remember the title). They didn't play quite as much with the orange, but all of the shadows and medium tones are teal in many of the scenes, even when it basically defies reason for there to be that much teal in any kind of realistic lighting in a setting where nothing in it is actually teal to begin with.

Teal & orange's second coming

Now that the DALL-E has been successfully midjourneyfied, it is becoming apparent that instead of simulating all possible ›styles‹, AI is fostering the emergence of a distinct visual style, born out of popular aesthetic preferences dominating platforms like DeviantArt

PPS: Thanks to @saintsoftness just learned that there already is a name for this color scheme, »Teal and Orange«, a popular look in color grading and achieved by »push[ing] blues or teals into the shadows and oranges or yellows into the highlights« https://t.co/GHgJ1SIcgb
