I like them both but my first instinct is Rogan. I'd rather hang out with him.

ENBB, Monday, 7 February 2011 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

would chill w/ both bros, tbh

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 7 February 2011 16:20 (thirteen years ago) link

both of them are pretty limited as actors and rogen didn't really work in 'green goblin' or whatever it was

but he's funnier than pegg in 'paul', which really shows up pegg's limitations as a writer when working apart from edgar wright/jessica surname/someone who isn't nick frost

Pegg seems more versatile to me, in that his his Hot Fuzz character's totally different from his Shaun of the Dead character, etc. although he definitely has an identifiable default mode. Rogen is all default all the time, and when he tries to take it in a different direction (Observe and Report) or do something wacky (like the dual roles in ugh Fanboys) it's just embarrassing imo, so having liked and disliked plenty of things by both of them, i think that tips the scales toward Pegg for me.

some dude, Monday, 7 February 2011 16:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Pegg. Rogan seems like a nice guy though.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 7 February 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago) link

that's a good point about 'hot fuzz'. i like em both but basically just saw 'paul' and it's kind of a stinker in which rogen, while not redeeming it entirely, does a lot better than the rest. it's a bit like 'the invention of lying', where gervais was able to get all these stellar cameos -- the same people, even -- to basically do nothing good.

a gadfly within the ranks of the nationalist far right (history mayne), Monday, 7 February 2011 16:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I always think that Rogen has done more really funny shit than Pegg but seeing it laid out like that I'm not so sure, Rogen has fallen off more than I thought. But obviously Pegg's fallen off massively as well.

But actually I'd rather watch Pineapple Express or Superbad again than anything Pegg's been in, including Spaced. H8 Knocked Up.

Shit, this is tough... leaning Rogen though, if only because Simon Pegg feels so overexposed over here, not to mention too old for his schtick now.

Matt DC, Monday, 7 February 2011 16:31 (thirteen years ago) link

not to mention too old for his schtick now

this is a big part of it. 'shaun' is about a guy in his late twenties who has to choose having a girlfriend over being a geeky teenager, kind of thing. in 'paul' he's 40, getting fat, and still doing the same shit. the look isn't getting any more good.

slimmed-down rogen is sort of wrong, on the other hand.

a gadfly within the ranks of the nationalist far right (history mayne), Monday, 7 February 2011 16:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Can you just get away with being a comedy stoner loser for longer if you're American?

Matt DC, Monday, 7 February 2011 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

brogen is only 28

a gadfly within the ranks of the nationalist far right (history mayne), Monday, 7 February 2011 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

voting pegg cause his rise from nerdy sketch-com to re-booted scotty seems more extraordinary.

well, he's tried. 'funny people' didn't quite work for me, but basically rogen is working with sarah polley on some film, and doing some thing about cancer that i guess may have him as a stoner geek, but otoh might not.

a gadfly within the ranks of the nationalist far right (history mayne), Monday, 7 February 2011 16:44 (thirteen years ago) link

it looks like in Live With It he plays the 'comedic best friend' of someone with cancer so yeah, don't think it'll be very outside the box for him. and really even his non-typical roles tend to be the kind of thing where i think yeah that idea would totally appeal to a nerdy stoner, if that makes any sense.

some dude, Monday, 7 February 2011 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I vote Spaced.

kraudive, Monday, 7 February 2011 17:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Pegg as a writer and bro i'd like to hang out with >>>>> Rogan as the same, even if I did like Superbad.

pegg easy - more likable, more versatile, less overexposed (for americans anyway)

He needs to disappear for a while definitely.

Although, like I said upthread, I'd want to hang out with SR more I voted Pegg because I think that overall he's more talented and way less of a one trick pony.

x-post

ENBB, Monday, 7 February 2011 17:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Pegg is much much funnier IMO...haven't seen the movie "Paul" yet but Hot Fuzz/Shaun are great and his work on Spaced and Big Train is incredible...BTW Big Train has got to be the most hit or miss sketch comedy show ever, it's decent overall but when it was on it was really hilarious.

frogbs, Monday, 7 February 2011 18:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Spaced > Hot Fuzz > Shaun imo - haven't seen either Big Train or Paul

ENBB, Monday, 7 February 2011 19:00 (thirteen years ago) link

saw Spaced after the Wright movies and was kinda underwhelmed, felt like a dry run for the flicks tbh

some dude, Monday, 7 February 2011 19:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Big Train isn't so much "hit or miss" as "started off with 3 or 4 classic episodes then went straight to shit".

Y Kant Torres Red (Noodle Vague), Monday, 7 February 2011 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

X-post Yeah, I mean, spaced is totally different but I loved it. I think I've watched the whole series at least twice now.

ENBB, Monday, 7 February 2011 19:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll be honest I don't remember which episodes of Big Train were what...I watched the whole series once and just watched the individual sketches on Youtube. The "Tom Henderson" bit cracks me up everytime. Everything about it is perfect. I remember that even Season 2 had its moments though it was clearly weaker. Come to think of it, Spaced was mostly the same way. Some really great parts, some of it cringe-worthy, but overall I thought it was a good watch. I think the atmosphere of the show was really great, it seemed like a great world to live in if you catch my drift.

frogbs, Monday, 7 February 2011 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link

pegg didn't write 'big train', i don't think. 'spaced' was epic tho, wtf. (guess i haven't seen it in a long-ass time tho.) it surprises me how much i like this stuff, because im not a sci-fi/comix/______ person and don't identify much with rogen's character(s). i only saw it two weeks ago but now cannot remember a damned thing worth remembering about 'green hornet'.

a gadfly within the ranks of the nationalist far right (history mayne), Monday, 7 February 2011 21:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I know he didn't write it but I thought his acting (along with Mark Heap) was what really made the show.

I saw Green Hornet too...that and Superbad were what really kind of put Rogan into obnoxious territory for me; he's definitely funny but he doesn't really work as a leading man IMO which is something Pegg is totally fine with.

Extreme-Accounting (or E-A) is an extreme sport in a similar vein to Extreme Ironing, in which people in accountancy-related roles take a calculator, laptop, Attaché case, PDA etc. with them into a remote location or action-sports situation and do some “book-keeping” work.

Extreme-Accounting claims to be the natural evolution of centuries of Proto-E-As – from bean counters in the earliest civilizations through the medieval codifiers of accountancy practice and a variety of latter day adventurers and pioneers. A selection of these are thoughtfully highlighted on the Extreme-Accounting website in a section describing itself as the movement’s “Dubious Past”.
