i always got the sense that people considered this one THE classic sonic game but thinking back, i like most of the levels in 3 & knuckles better than 1 and 2. 3&k also had nuts music (hydrocity!)

I always took this to be the least classic game.

All the first 3 Sonics were pretty classic, especially the music...Sega has since done a lot of 'hip' music that sometimes ends up quite embarrassing, but Sonic was really the first time you heard THAT kind of music in a video game, plus the rumored Michael Jackson involvement put it all over the top for me.

Believe it or not I always thought the Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) games had the potential to be as good as the originals, but they ruined it by adding in so many boring non-Sonic levels...the actual Sonic gameplay was cool.

I always thought Sonic was one of the coolest video game characters, as long as he was depicted as kind of a psychotic goofball like he was in the original cartoon.

This is *my* classic Sonic game because it's what came bundled with my Genesis (along with Aladdin and a 3-in-1 that included World Cup Italia '90, Columns, and Super Hang On 2) so it's by far the one I played most.

the bonus round in this was nowhere near as good as sonic 1

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 20 February 2011 17:21 (thirteen years ago) link

the bonus round was ruined by tails always getting hit by spikes

Totally agree with this actually!

Aquatic Ruin, not because it's a particularly good zone, but because as a kid (and still today) I found the idea of water filled with plant life and architectural fragments extremely appealing.

^^^ pretty compelling for me too. Hard for me to separate the levels from the music though - - Emerald Hill Zone's 2-player version gets in my head a lot.

For pure like, high-flyin' ADVENTURE and drama I think Hill Top Zone captured my imagination the most as a kid.

Don't get the Casino Nights votes at all - - frustrated the HECK out of me getting stuck in those ding-ding-ding-ding things, I wanted to keep speeding along!

Sonic 2 was my favorite as a kid even though I prefer the bigger sprite "look" of Sonic 1 and I think the levels/music are better there - - - but 2 was huge, and the Super Sonic chaos emeralds quest was awesome. Looking back I can't beLIEVE I actually sat there and systematically got good enough to pull that off. No saves! One play-through, you had to be close to perfect to get all the damn emeralds... real sense of accomplishment there.

Chemical Plant Zone is the best level, best music is Oil Ocean

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 16:25 (thirteen years ago) link

also really dug the aquatic ruin vibe but didn't think it was the most fun to actually play through.

chemical plant or sky chase are the ones that come to mind but my memory's hazy.

original bgm, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 16:28 (thirteen years ago) link

might give the edge to sky chase zone just because of

i'm thinking about sonic 3 now and damn every zone in that one was fun and complex, way better than 1 or 2 imo

and hydrocity had the best music in the whole series

ciderpress, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 16:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I wish I'd owned Sonic 3 and also Sonic & Knuckles - - I would probably rank the games very differently if I had. I remember being wowed by the environments in those ones on rentals, and having a playable character with different abilities who could actually access different parts of the game seemed really neat to me, too.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Sky Chase zone btw also seems like a funny choice - forcing Sonic to do a precise-jumping kind of platformer thing seems just out of the spirit of the game. I like that it's in there, to break up the format and so on, but it's not really the "pure essence of the cartridge" or what have you...

four months pass...

played through the whole game today for the first time in like six years. pretty much the perfect game for me, except for those bonus levels which you probably do have to spend 1000 hours perfecting. oddly enough i feel like sonic 1 is actually harder than this one -- can't remember if i ever made it to the end of sonic 3 or sonic and knuckles.

metropolis zone has the best music, by far -- killer tune.

I’ve got a load of old sega games for the switch so playing this through for the first time, and fuck me, it’s hard! Metropolis zone is hell.

oil ocean > mystic cave > chemical plant

gyac, do you have the sega ages version or the mega drive classics collection? the classics collection has infamously bad input latency

Only 1 vote for Aquatic Ruin? Wtf?

pomenitul, Wednesday, 19 August 2020 21:43 (three years ago) link

The classics collection - I’m not sure if it does or doesn’t on switch but I was surprised I was so bad at it!

caută tu singur (gyac), Wednesday, 19 August 2020 21:53 (three years ago) link

Fuck the hilariously named Death Egg Zone. However I have now completed this game but fuck getting 100% on it tbh.
