dan m, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I need to just delete my MySpace account already. And Friendster, too.

jaymc, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I am transferring all of my stock over to Facebook, since it's the only social-networking site where one of the founders lists my band in the Favorite Music section of his profile.

jaymc, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I think of that as online suicide. Robin Ru22o did that a while back when she was in a depression. It's funny.

Jesse, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:30 (sixteen years ago) link

You mean Robin Ru55o?

jaymc, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Is that really why?

I mostly use myspace to listen to music at work, and also when I want to crash my web browser.

Jordan, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

All myspace does for me anymore is causes me to dread checking my email and sifting through all the porn spam I got.

kenan, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

^^^

jaymc, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:33 (sixteen years ago) link

I still have fun changing up my myspace layout and song. Also, I update my blog. I AM NOT ASHAMED!

KitCat, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:34 (sixteen years ago) link

laurel, i found an awesome eames-era end table on eBay over the weekend that was BEEEEEEEAUTIFUL and CHEAP!! I made lists of all the things I want to buy when I start getting a pay check again. it was mostly food and kitchen items but i'm sick of my utilitarian bookshelves and ugly-assed couch.

sarah, billisa just left for their tour and they've been printing the shirts for him. he'll be at the note with the busy signal on the 2nd.

hey dc/nyc folk who may be on this thread, go see cococcoma when they hit your town next week. or at least2 2/3rds of them. mike doesn't join them until providence i think or maybe nyc. i know he said he'll be there when they record at wfmu but i don't know if that's before or after the show at don pedro's.

chicago kevin, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:36 (sixteen years ago) link

No, J, that's not really why. Facebook is basically the synthesis to Friendster and MySpace's thesis and antithesis: it's the streamlined aesthetic and regulated accessibility of Friendster combined with the technological innovation of MySpace.

jaymc, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

YES YES wait Don Pedro's doesn't have a schedule anywhere...?

Laurel, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

it's on a tuesday or a wednesday i think.

chicago kevin, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:41 (sixteen years ago) link

My favorite thing about Facebook is the way it has plugins for other web pages that I use all the time -- flickr, del.icio.us, iLike, even Skype -- and it tells me when, for instance, Jeff adds a del.icio.us bookmark to his account. All it needs is a gmail and gchat interface, and it would be pretty one-stop.

kenan, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Coming soon, I'm sure.

kenan, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I really like the JayR album.

I don't wanna have to deal with setting up another profile somewhere else.

KitCat, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:49 (sixteen years ago) link

You will someday soon, though. It's the inevitable tide.

kenan, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:51 (sixteen years ago) link

wait what

dan m, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:52 (sixteen years ago) link

i really wish i had some melon soup right now. that would SO FUCKING HIT THE SPOT.

chicago kevin, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:53 (sixteen years ago) link

one dog curled into a little wiener dog bun on my lap the other asleep with his paws over his eyes right up next to me... i'm in little dog heaven right now.

chicago kevin, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh stuff it, Kenan. No matter what you and jw say I am not opening a facebook account.

KEVIN, YAY YAYAY AYAYAY for little dogs. I like your happiness.

Laurel, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Speaking of ice cream (ok, well, way upthread), Nick introduced me to this loveliness last night:

Any pix of the wee ones, Kevin?

KitCat, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I know that Facebook as a nice, clean interface and all of that, but it hasn't clicked with me. It feels like there's too many places to try and communicate (communites, messages, walls, I don't know what) and I've never contacted or been contacted by someone on Facebook that couldn't have just e-mailed me.

Jordan, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Everyone knows the REAL online ass-shopping hottnezz is iilwy.com.

dan m, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link

batteries are dead in the camera but peep this guy... http://www.myspace.com/littleboybanjo

chicago kevin, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:59 (sixteen years ago) link

But inilwy.

jaymc, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:00 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm not trying to be prescriptive about facebook, really i'm not! Do what you like. It's just that it's the next generation - there are so many features and games and useful apps that sooner or later you'll probably be told about something on there that you would really like to be a part of. See the still-growing ILX scrabble community, for one example.

kenan, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I hate Scrabble.

Laurel, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:06 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm sure there are many useful aspects to it but i'm at the point where i have neither the time nor desire to be part of another social network. once this one circles the drain i'm done too.

xpost- laurel you have just made a mortal enemy.

chicago kevin, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

But inilwy.

well you have one of those girlfriend things

dan m, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:09 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost yeah it has way more potential than myspace to be a TOOL, like a personal wiki with social-networking already built into it.

kenan, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

i don't a "personal wiki". that's what my purse is for.

La Lechera, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I am sad that Banj0's profile is set to private. CUTE!

Back in Virginny, I used to play literati quite a bit at work with my mom and sisters (also at work).

KitCat, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:17 (sixteen years ago) link

i don't *want/need* is what i meant.

oops. snark attack failed.

La Lechera, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i don't want many people, let alone anyone who can read, knowing all sorts of shit about me. fuck, i can't even remember everything that happens to me.

chicago kevin, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:28 (sixteen years ago) link

No one would know anything you didn't want them to know. You can limit access to your profile to just your friends. People are skeptical of the fact that Facebook is opening itself up to Google searches, but you can tell it not to, and even if you don't, all people see is a name and a photo, anyway.

jaymc, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyone see 2 Days in Paris?

Jordan, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:33 (sixteen years ago) link

i like that--i have my (unusual) real last name on facebook, which i don't have on any other social networking site. and some friends from eons ago have found me as a result, which is kind of cool.
xp

JuliaA, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Nope, Jordan. I really wanted to, until I read it was more about a couple arguing than anything else. I still KIND of want to... dunno. Have you seen it?

KitCat, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I hear it's really good. I am seeing it this week!

horseshoe, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:43 (sixteen years ago) link

No, but I was thinking of seeing it tonight. I like Julie Delpy and couples arguing.

Jordan, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Ditto.

jaymc, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

But I also want to see the nu-westerns and Eastern Promises.

Jordan, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I heard enough of my parents arguing growing up to last a lifetime.

KitCat, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Me too, I guess I draw a mental line between older couples in hopeless marriages and young couples in relationships trying to figure things out.

Jordan, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I DO really like Julie Delpy.

KitCat, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:51 (sixteen years ago) link

a friend reports that it is the most feminist romantic movie she's ever seen. which, maybe it doesn't have a lot of competition in that department, but still.
