Rolling Noise 2011

The Sohrab album is better in the second half where it gets a bit darker iirc. Found it hard to keep up with new ambient stuff last year and was thinking of starting a rolling ambient/drone/drift/field recordings/cricket noises thread... anyone interested? Or do it here?

Anyone getting into the new Aethenor? O'Malley and cohorts playing freeform rock improv that's not too dissimilar in feel to something like Supersilent. Sounds p. good on first listen.

feeling this. supersilent is a fair comparison but it's a bit more spacious, less funk.

Jon Mueller played an excellent percussion set opening for Colin Stetson at the New Museum tonite. Stetson was extremely impressive but more in a virutoso/physical phenomenon way (he plays bass saxophone and makes it sounds like noisy synth at times!) but Mueller's set really hypnotized me. I don't have a great vocabulary to describe it...minimal, rolling percussion hits with some pre-recorded, ominous feedback/noise growing in volume and then some vocalizations buried in the mix. He has a new(ish) record on Type, I have not heard. It was more drone than noise although it was loud. Good stuff.

there seems to be a lot of great stuff on type (im deeply impressed w/ deaf centre's 'owl splinters') although i worry that im merely impressed w/ how 'tasteful' their releases are

The small metal balls represent one of the key ideas behind the album (linked to chaos theory, uncontrollable variables in output) ; they roll through the box perfectly unpredictable.

oh, of course. :-)

listened again last night - sure, the way the recording interacts with the room it plays in and how you're positioned in it definitely adds an element of chaos. but I think what I really like is how these "uncontrollable variables" interact with such a rigid, precise, and DIGITAL composition. just these tight, cutting slabs of sound needling/bludgeoning you until the rug is pulled out and you're abruptly tossed into the next sound palette. really powerful.

and yes, j. I recall reading some warning not to listen on headphones on the emego press release. I certainly wouldn't advise it.
