what gabbneb said about Zagat. I use it as a locator and also for it's favorites feature.

I wish there was a good restaurant site, especially if it were iPhone friendly, where I could keep track of all the places I want to eat by neighborhood and by city. Are there any?

Dandy Don Weiner, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:48 (fifteen years ago) link

torta was almost like pork stew meets a sandwich .... shredded pork on bread but served in a bowl (cause the bread gets all mushy)

o, a torta ahogada? excited cause i am going to guadalajara where they are a speciality.

mizzell, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:51 (fifteen years ago) link

xp - gayot, maybe. it seems to have some biases to adjust for (in favor of clubby/douchey-upscale/French places?), but seems a useful aid for making marginal distinctions between top-rated restaurants

where should i eat while home? looking for something newish and pretty moderately priced (entrees under $20). and interesting. i've been eating lots of mexican and thai lately, so... not that.

in favor of clubby/douchey-upscale/French places?

Lolz OTM

update: Mia Dona on e. 58thish was OK. food was kind of ordinary

BUT the papardelle bolognese was out of this world.

anyone heard of this lebanese place Ilili? http://www.ililinyc.com/newsphotos.html

friend says it was a treat. i reealllly wanna go

Surmounter, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link

has anyone been to aurora in williamsburg? i went to the soho outpost and liked it... had some kind of venison in chestnut puree with bacon lardons that was v v good

beyonc'e (max), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:37 (fifteen years ago) link

all i remember are the early reviews, which were pretty mixed. combine that with the (relatively high) prices and the big nightclubby space, and it's not a place i'm particularly interested in. don't mean to sound too negative, but those are my initial thoughts.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost re: ilili

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link

it does seem slightly tacky but the menu looks good and the prices on a lot of the stuff doesn't seem bad at all.

anyway i'm lebanese i have to go and indulge my slightly tacky proclivities ;)

Surmounter, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

ha. i just have the fear where those huge, bar-centric places in flatiron/murray hill are concerned. any other lebanese places you'd recommend?

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:48 (fifteen years ago) link

you know, there's one in queens that's supposed to be amaaazing. will dig up the name

Surmounter, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:49 (fifteen years ago) link

(recommended by family)

Surmounter, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:50 (fifteen years ago) link

As far as more mom-and-pop-style Lebanese, I really like Waterfalls Cafe on Atlantic Ave, and have also heard good things about Zaytouns.

Indiespace Administratester (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:50 (fifteen years ago) link

waterfalls is good. zaytoons was a favorite when i lived in boerum hill, but it's been years since i've eaten there.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:51 (fifteen years ago) link

i need to try both

Surmounter, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

theres zaytoons in clinton hill n pros heights too

Lafayette Lever hi wtf (ice cr?m), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:53 (fifteen years ago) link

i think i got the same exact thing every time i ate at zaytoons: lentil soup (it's the lemony, pureed kind) and a spinach pie, no cheese.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:54 (fifteen years ago) link

i have to tell you tho, a spinach pie with a little cheese that stretches and pulls with the dough...!!

Surmounter, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:55 (fifteen years ago) link

mm, I love lemony lentil soup

Indiespace Administratester (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:55 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, agreed on the cheese. i was vegan for a while though.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:56 (fifteen years ago) link

man, those spinach pies are good. they're big, calzone-style ones, baked in delicious homemade pitas.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:57 (fifteen years ago) link

i love calzone style! i think that's a close approximation of heaven, one of those with soup

Surmounter, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i grew up with the small triangle spinach pies but i was a quick convert to calzone

Surmounter, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:00 (fifteen years ago) link

they both have their merits. damascus bakery on atl ave is good for buying bags of the little triangle guys.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:02 (fifteen years ago) link

they also have pistachio baklava.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:03 (fifteen years ago) link

zaytoons has made me ill many, many times, but i still eat there because they deliver late.

ian, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:04 (fifteen years ago) link

wasn't someone else saying that about the pros hts location, too? that branch sounds like it has problems. i never had any issues with the original one (never ate meat there, though).

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:06 (fifteen years ago) link

so the place i was talking is actually Palestinian in Sunset Park (i know, how accurate am i). it's called Tanoreen and i've had the food delivery once OMG.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:08 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, that place! it's in bay ridge, i think? it's supposed to be wonderful. we almost went there for lunch on sunday, but went for mexican in sunset park instead.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:11 (fifteen years ago) link

yes yes bay ridge. arrrgh i wanna go NOW

Surmounter, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:12 (fifteen years ago) link

ian likely referring to the pros height zaytoons fwiw

Lafayette Lever hi wtf (ice cr?m), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:13 (fifteen years ago) link

btw, lunch in sunset park ruled. went to la guera (aka ricos tamales) and had the most amazing soup (barbacoa) in addition to some great tamales and tacos .

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

where should i eat while home? looking for something newish and pretty moderately priced (entrees under $20).

maybe dirt candy, which opened on 9th st in november? it's non-granola vegetarian in a cute little space.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

wasn't someone else saying that about the pros hts location, too?

yeah, me. I won't go there anymore. it's the same one Ian's talking about, the one on Vanderbilt

dmr, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:46 (fifteen years ago) link

but dave, where do you order food from after 11pm?!

ian, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

or are you one of those people who eats at reasonable hour?

ian, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

not that reasonable ... but not usually after 11 either

after 10 there's still a couple options, although some are on the park slope side and may not go all the way back to you (Antonio's Pizza, Helios, Joy ...)

I think maybe Teddy's goes that late? I like their gyros

dmr, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 20:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Tanoreen is awesome. Been twice, once on a "what's Bay Ridge like?" lark and then on the way back from buying my Mac at the Staten Island Mall Apple store.

Zaytoons is like family to me. I love it, but I'm sick of it, but it's always comforting.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:09 (fifteen years ago) link

fairly poor experiences with the smith street zaytoons

mookieproof, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

aw. it used to be so good.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:26 (fifteen years ago) link

it's not bad, but thankfully i am nearer to Atlantic and all that resides there...

Has anyone eaten at Irving Mill yet? I'm very interested in the charcrouterie (sic) plate they do.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 22:06 (fifteen years ago) link

we tried it. liked the plate and the restaurant very much. i'll mail you.

lauren, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 22:12 (fifteen years ago) link

cheers dude

i finally had my first 5 guys experience* last night (the one on montague st). in-n-out, the gauntlet has been thrown. hard.

*lol "out of context" thread etc

marjane satriani (get bent), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 22:16 (fifteen years ago) link

lol i think everyone who has eaten at five guys has spent plenty of time making the "i love to stuff my face with five guys" jokes
