i know everybody else has already forgotten abt it but can we have one chillwave thread that isnt entirely ¡LOLwave! or w/e

bam's post really has me thinking but its all still p messy. "a new acoustic age" made me think of this tho:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g18sAmhFVI

i think its a little too long & crammed w/ ideas to be really effective but the way he layers the track is p neat

"if Glenn Gould wishes he were the Steinway to be closer to Bach, what does Bach do to be closer to Bach? Like to what degree is there a perfect Bach in the sheet music and the mechanisms of the piano and tape and mixing deck, and is there some equivalent that Bach himself was looking for, as if he could also remove himself from the equation"

do you mean in relation 2 their being some sort of built-in inevitable failure. like you have to admit that this kind of transcendence is impossible and in a way it becomes a kindof playing out of that inevitability or?

plax (ico), Saturday, 29 January 2011 10:23 (thirteen years ago) link

hey plax are you still around? have you listened to the ducktails 'killing the vibe' youtube? ive been listening to it a lot this month.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELILsuB4LvU&feature=related

i came on this randomly while listening to drone songs on youtube (looking for a celer track for ilx i think). i like it a lot but it also an ex of how the 'curitorial' aspect of chillwave manages to reinterpret older sounds & modes w/in its own aesthetic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-g8JHa8Sots

ive heard really good things abt the young athletes league ceremony ep but im not really sure what this is - its too menacing & plodding to really dance to - but i like the traxx control & echo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anUbut-22qA

this is just p fantastic - weird proto-witch house (ugh) but the vocals on this cld be p effectively repurposed for a sweeter chillwave track i think

ok idk its winter im doing the best i can!!!!

Lamp, Saturday, 5 February 2011 06:07 (thirteen years ago) link

plax I just saw your post but I addressed the issue of the impossibility (nonsense) of transcendence in my email. I think the resolution of the body removal problem is the actual mechanics of the piano/machine that you can touch and play with. It gives the artist a backdoor. It seems like I've created a problem that isn't there - I have and I admitted as much. But when I get depressed and my life seems completely joyless I start doing things like denying authorship and I think that's sort of what I was doing with Bach a year ago october, as if "Bach" were a functional, communally agreed on term that isn't where the preludes and fugues exactly come from. feel like shit

I think you're being nice and not sarcastic. That Emily Reo tape wasn't good at all - not chillwave, more like guitar strumming and singing and a really annoyingly low recording level. Would make you a tape maybe but that's sort of ocd, because I had this prefab thing that turned out to be disappointing and so I feel I have to replace it with something but I know I don't.

I kind of want the tip of the tongue/nostalgia/hypnagogia aspect of this to collectively run its course and see a new sharp premodern music come to fore.

just cobbling together words & images like a semi-literate

this was directed @ myself & not you btw

i like the emily reo stuff ive heard particularly witch mtn pt. 2 and the built to spill cover linxd itt there is something protean abt her stuff, for good & for ill

yeah i havent really listened to anything beyond that built to spill cover but its really beautiful, glassy eyed transcendence via banal cliche. it sounds like it is full of secrets.

theres a load of things you guys are talking about that i want to digest and return to. idk. my brain is stalling these days. sometimes i just want to think about nothing at all.

i've been playing the hell out of the ducktails - killing the vibe youtube lately. going through a p chillwave phase of life these days; it's the depths of cold winter here & my girlfriend of 2 years & i broke up early jan & although i do feel the snow (now over a foot deep) is wondrous a lot of my life now consists of a vague grasping for better times. it's such a perfect song. going to go walk the dog & listen to the album now but i am prepared for dissapointment

flopson, Thursday, 10 February 2011 04:49 (thirteen years ago) link

ive been p into hips like cinderella's 'it's what ev' lately & was thinking abt that kinda of listless slacker good time vibe & how great indie pop was @ it. also that kinda of in-the-know deep cut lyric referencing seems almost outre now, or at least pointless. cue the smiths nods:

have you/anyone heard the puro instinct (née pearl harbor) album? on 1st listen its really wonderful gossamer & chill & limpid w/o being too soft & inconsequential but im not sure how much i trust my own instincts here

on my 2nd listen through i think this record is kinda special? kinda want 2 start a thread 4 it but itll just be ilm being tedious probably but im impressed w/ how well they sustain the atmosphere & concealing haze over every song. esp stuff like elongating the words in 'california shakedown' to meaninglessness making it just another layer just added texture to the songs empty wishing well guitars

i don't really understand why star slinger is getting lumped in with chillwave/indie stuff, sounds like straight-up rap beats. like southern 808 beats + early '00s kanye/just blaze-style sampling.

adult music person (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:44 (thirteen years ago) link

haha the very obv recycling of the early kanye style vocal sample is the most chillwave thing abt that track, maybe! also just the haze and the repeated vocals the way it plays with structure and pace (not the right word um) its full of chillwave/related signifiers also:

the teams vs star slinger record that that track is from is on mexican summer their videos nod @ pil's radio 4 (linked itt by plax lol) the stick w/ the whole faded polaroid blurred landscape aesthetic &c &c

WINNING. (Lamp), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link

the label and video are just presentation/window dressing though. i like his tracks a lot, but i don't hear all that much haze or nostalgia factor. someone like matthewdavid has way more of that going on.

adult music person (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

well if you buy into the idea of chillwave/whichhaus as a 'curatorial' genre than the 'window dressing' matters a lot. i mean obv part of how this stuff distingushes itself is by the way it connects the emotional content of the music w/ the aesthetic milieu it exists within & so although there arent strong sonic similarties btw every song itt they share a # of structural/formal/paramusical qualities: repetitions, reference, reflexivity &c &c

idk i mean the layering & echo & repetition in 'punch drink love' connects it p well to lots of other chillwave stuff even if the specific sonic palette mines different sources from say cool runnings

WINNING. (Lamp), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:09 (thirteen years ago) link

anyway

a) even if you 'don't buy' my assertion that teams vs star slinger belongs in the chillwave thread there isnt really anywhere else to put it
b) its a rad track imo & i regret sleeping on last year's EP
c) 'say please' is probably an even tighter jam but i lynx too much

WINNING. (Lamp), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:16 (thirteen years ago) link

a) even if you 'don't buy' my assertion that teams vs star slinger belongs in the chillwave thread there isnt really anywhere else to put it

what! instrumental beat- and sample-based music (or whatever you want to call it) a pretty big tent right now, and to me this could easily fit alongside gold panda and various brainfeeder stuff.

adult music person (Jordan), Thursday, 3 March 2011 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

i meant 'put it' in the sense of a place to post videos & discuss the song on ilm i.e. ppl posting gold panda videos itt also

also lol @ 'lumped in' i guess, contra ilm, this is a place where mentioning a song along side 'chillwave/indie' is not some kind of aspersion but a compliment

F♯ A♯, Red♯ Blue♯ (Lamp), Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:13 (thirteen years ago) link

even tho chillwave is mostly abt 80's vibes/samples, the 50's (60's?) sample in punch drunk love works just as well employed to the same effect. like, music played at a skating rink or at a thrift store lol

flopson, Thursday, 3 March 2011 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

well part of what i think is rad is that theres the effect of the sample itself - the sound, the sentiment it conveys - but it also gets framed again by so obviously referencing kanye its kinda like what plax talks about where the intent isnt just to reference something 80s but also contextualize it & talk about its delivery &c &c. so instead of nodding at vhs or tv broadcasts theyre referencing early 00s hip hop, acknowledging the layers of media that surrond and influence things/creating distance e.g. "revelling in the gap between you & yr muse&content," or as plax indicates the "tools used in the production recreate what the artists are trying to do emotionally: the impossible task of trying to recreate the past from these faded fragments"

i mean i think its a really beautiful song but part of why it appeals to me aside from its formal qualities is the way it uses these techniques common to chillwave trax to also comment on the emotional purpose of the song, to recreate for the listener the emotional context theyre interested in

Lamp, Friday, 11 March 2011 04:41 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess thats a sort of lazy binary, trading in pseudo profundity, but i still think that tension is really interesting, really complicating. in one of the lucksmith songs i linked he sings about "the days ive thrown away & the hours i am keeping" & i think thats an important dichotomy btw seeing time as endless & unvarying and yet feeling overwhelmed by impermanence, by the weight of time passing. again the present is this listless expanse like the sunny july day @ the water in that julia kent piece, but the past & future are lurking...

idk i might have already posted this, not chillwave but that hasnt really bothered any of us so far so w/e. was thinking abt how this (cassette only lol) release by aybee kindof elides w/ the housier end of chillwave. The hiss of mystical new age meditation tapes found in a charity shop bin. was thinking about house and ambient house and music as a functional thing and how that intersects w/ these meditation tapes and how this functionality is in some way linked w/ the kind of invocation that chillwave seems haunted by. creating a space for (x). The connection/disconnection between mind and body, body and sign. A heartbeat rising from inside the machine.

bamcquern, Friday, 25 March 2011 13:20 (thirteen years ago) link

ive been craving chillwaves pop moment lately, & missing the cautiously upbeat sentiments buried under tape hiss & delays that i was hearing in some of the trax from last year. idk here are five tracks ive really been listening too this month, sorry if thats sorta self-agrandizing

dale earnhardt jr. jr. - nothing but our love

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm1p3jl-7b4
this is 'older' at least in the universe of five blog posts a day + unlimited mediafire d/lers but i keep coming back to this song - its central sentiment of 'dont try/dont try so hard/my love is easy' and the way the track squiggles and sways against the vocal harmonies makes me sad but i like how self-aware & essentially knowing the singer is. 'we get more than we deserve' indeed

cool runnings - i am you (starslinger remix)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFxLXj2FOCc
dominique & the new star slinger ep reminded me of this song, which i think is fantastic. the remix adds the echo & as much space as the endless blue sky but ties it the simplest thump. its a good example of how 'chillwave' songs can use static structures & a 'poor' range to make something catchy & pop & feeling

peaking lights - key sparrow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVgFaAZn8cc
the titular sparrow is 'much too common' & 'nothing special' but this is my fave track on the new album & its laidback sunny melancholy is perfectly pitched imo. a hazy ode to trying and failing, a recognition of limitations

young athletes leauge - glossed over

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUsMqqpdJy8
haha kinda dont have much to say abt this i think the bones of the track sound like the sorta thing u cld make on the playstation two mtv music generator game

death and vanilla - ghosts in the machine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YWnqdPE-S0
a friend told me that this is a p direct reference of some 80s thing but i cant remember what she sd. i hear a noir morricone filtered through early english dream pop. i dont think it really matters tho bcuz this is such a perfect marriage of emotional intent & technical skill the track just glides. i think its really beautiful

Lamp, Thursday, 31 March 2011 03:56 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the death & vanilla stuff a lot

men at work choices (electricsound), Thursday, 31 March 2011 03:58 (thirteen years ago) link

have you heard the new peaking lights? i think youd dig it quite a bit. ive cooled a bit on the puro instinct record although i think theres still some great stuff there
