It's like they're trying to market it specifically to blind people.

The last Trail of Dead cover wasn't too offensive but WTF is this a Chronicles of Narnia concept album?
― Evan, Friday, 28 January 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link
i think i will be giving them another try in 2011 just in case that heralds their bounce back to top form with a steampunk fantasy concept album

I know I'm in an ever dwindling minority, but as I said earlier I still mess with AYWKUBTTOD, partially because how ridiculously OTT they are - in artwork, arrangements, even live. I saw them play like a 12:30 PM set at Lollapalooza the first year of its Chicago residency, and they played like they were in a dank club at two in the morning. Tore the shit out of their instruments (literally, towards the end of the set), spent half the time in the crowd (no small feat with the way the stage was set-up), and seemed to not give a fuck that they had a small crowd and a shitty time slot.

I like that Big Eagle thing. I don't like the band name or album title or the font though.

I think that "Tao of the Dead" album looks pretty awesome, like a poster for a steampunk cartoon or comic book. (Possibly the reason I like it is that I've nothing against steampunk fiction, and I don't quite get why many ILXors seem to hate it.) Much better than the sort of album covers with a mundane, faded 1970s polaroid and an IKEA-friendly font, which seem to get a lot of praise in these threads.

Not exactly a new direction for them, but the Demdike Stare "Tryptych" cover is rad:

Never sure how much depth there is to Demdike's pretentious/portentous schtick but the execution is A++.

I'm guessing the SY one is a shot from the movie for which the album serves as a soundtrack.

Why isn't that Marianne Faithfull album called Horses and High Heels and Seaside and Abundant Flowers?
― dolphins cavorting in a cathedral (staggerlee), Monday, 31 January 2011 04:42 (thirteen years ago) link
Also, why does it say "Horses" when there clearly only one single horse? I mean, everything else is on the nose obvious, so that seems like a major fuck up.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 31 January 2011 04:53 (thirteen years ago) link
You don't see the other horse drowning in the sea?
― Tuomas, Monday, 31 January 2011 07:30 (thirteen years ago) link
I think those are rocks. But I did just notice one in the vegetation.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 31 January 2011 07:38 (thirteen years ago) link
Several horses in the vegetation (well, two, possibly more) and one in the sea foam.
― Hipster Thermador (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 31 January 2011 08:29 (thirteen years ago) link
Sneaky damn horses.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 31 January 2011 08:31 (thirteen years ago) link
(Is the big cluster of pink/purple flowers on the right-hand side an upside horse?)
Is the album cover better or worse now that's been discovered to be a game of "find the horses"?

Cloud horse!
― Hipster Thermador (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 31 January 2011 08:34 (thirteen years ago) link
Ha, my previous post was meant to be joke, I hadn't noticed there actually are hidden horses in the pic.
― Tuomas, Monday, 31 January 2011 08:34 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah, that kind of resembles yet ANOTHER horse.
Playing "find the horses" at least makes it remarkable, but I still don't know that it's very good.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 31 January 2011 08:35 (thirteen years ago) link
I really like that cover picture. Reminds me of young adult fiction books for horse fan girls. And I love how there's a horse for each element in the pic: plant horse, water horse, air horse... Though it should have a sand horse too to make it complete. (Unless the real horse walking in the sand counts as "sand horse"?)

SOme of that artist's other work is pretty O_O, don't want to sully this thread with it though. Apparently he did some cover art for Prince too, but I can't quite figure out what.

^ original cover art for Around The World In A Day btw
Oh wow, I'm not sure if that's actually better or horribly worse than the picture they ended up using for ATWIAD.
― Tuomas, Monday, 31 January 2011 09:57 (thirteen years ago) link
Also, the actual album cover has pretty much all the same elements as Warren's version (which makes sense, since they images are based on the song titles and lyrics), but the bearded man hugging a tiger is missing. I wonder what happened with that?
