flocka coming 2nd in this poll basically proves everything I've suspected about ILX's incredibly narrow sense of what music should be

proud to be on the opposite side of LJ in this argument

Wut is a hip-hop beat AND a shimmery indie electronica instrumental AND a huge dancefloor anthem. It's number one because it unites different groups of listeners in a way that Mindreader doesn't.

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:04 (thirteen years ago) link

"look right through" and "mind reader" were on my ballot ;_;

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks to j0rdan, johnny and seandelai for polling. And also to Lex for his quarterly reports without which I wouldn't have had about 1/4 of my ballot.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah storm queen was my #1, really disappointed that it didn't place

I don't really get "wut" tbh, it's cool and everything but I don't see what the big deal is... maybe if I was more familiar with the scene

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i agree w/ jagger and whoever else about the aggro but basically dull character of wacka flocka. "hard in da paint" is a standout, and i voted for it (low on my ballot), but its placement here, like that of all top 3 entries seems a bit strange to me. dude doesn't really seem to have anything to offer other than energy and cred.

in a way, each of the top 3 songs is an almost cartoonish reduction of a key ILM contributer niche: dance pop, goon rap, and indie rock. they're songs that exemplify their genres for the faithful, not songs that unify the world under a populist umbrella. all seem like the sort of thing that should place in the 20s somewhere, maybe the low teens.

Mirrorage was 78. Hoping for a better showing from Ms Glasser in the albums..

I still think make up bag is the best love king track. Very happy to see terius on here though. I also discovered him from last year's poll with Fancy and he's been my most played artist this year too!

AWESOME POLL thanks jordan, johnny, seandalai, everyone else!

what is indie-non-indie

― ullr saves (gbx)

This term refers to artists like 'The Strokes' who even tho are not signed to an independent label get sympathy from listeners who exclusively listen to real independent artists.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Incidentally I'm rather behind now but Lightwight Jammin' is an absolute banger.

yeah but that's to be expected i think? cartoonish reduction = lowest common denominator imo

what is indie-non-indie

― ullr saves (gbx), Thursday, January 27, 2011 3:04 PM (31 seconds ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

indie aesthetics & values (highly conceptual sense of history, self-consciously high-brown, 'difficult,' 'retaining our pop sensibilities,' anglophilic tendencies, dance music that doesnt rely on af-am or latin rhythms, focus on textures over rhythms, some/any/none of these) shifted from rock to idm

tuomascratch beat (deej), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Problem with a lot of these popular indie albums was that people nominated four or five different songs off each of them. If Mirrorage had been the only song in the running it would probably have been top 30.

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

HOLY SHIT YES "wut" at #1!!

so glad i don't hear these the way you do...

i think 'dance pop' is an inaccurate way to describe 'wut' & wut's dominance prob has something to do w/ its indie overlap

tuomascratch beat (deej), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

wait a sec, wasn't the vote form supposed to be ordered 25-1? because if it was the other way around then....

Captain Ahab, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

First vote on your ballot was your #1 and got 50 points.

what does diversity represent, and how can some tracks (like "shutterbug") have a negative enthusaism?

It is really sweet the way you're pretending it has nothing to do with US rap production.

son of a bitch. why did i think it was the other way round???

lol @ deej, "wut" is so many genres (dance, garage, grime, dubstep, r&b, hip-hop) before it's indie o_0

ILM 2010 Tracks Poll Ballots/Stats/Banter/Recriminations Thread

ullr saves (gbx), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Alright guys I'm missing out on a great party because I wanted to see the results live. Gotta go. Thanks for doing this, one of the most interesting and agreeable polls I've seen on ILM.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:13 (thirteen years ago) link

this might surprise u guys but u.s. rap listeners like rapping in their rap songs

tuomascratch beat (deej), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:13 (thirteen years ago) link

xp yeah I voted for Apply, partly because I was trying to second-guess what the consensus might be? Anything from Ring could've represented it for me.

Also want to say how delighted I am with the results. Sure, I'm not into every song, but it really betrays a good message about ILM as a community of music fans.

Davek (davek_00), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:13 (thirteen years ago) link

I forgot what my ballot was - can someone send it to me?

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:13 (thirteen years ago) link

this is why:

"An ordered albums/tracks ballot will count the points down from 50, 48, 46...6, 4, 2."

interpreted that to mean my ballot should be ordered like that...

Captain Ahab, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:13 (thirteen years ago) link

wish id voted, wonder if waka would have taken it

tuomascratch beat (deej), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:14 (thirteen years ago) link

From what I can see, Wut was completely ignored by British indie audiences last year, they were going for Magnetic Man and the lairier end of dubstep instead.

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:14 (thirteen years ago) link

well done everyone, this was a blast

goole, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:14 (thirteen years ago) link

btw Drugs i gave up on trying to parse your post but it seemed like you were talking about doing ILM poll noms before P&J results, which we already do, and i was referring to bumping ILM results to run before P&J results

williamstevenjames (some dude), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Enthusiasm = (points total)/(#votes) - 26

So if it's negative then that track's voters were less enthusiastic than average (tended to put in in the lower half of their ballot)

Diversity = (number of unique tracks on all ballots for that track)/(number of tracks on all ballots for that track)

In general, diversity will go down as the number of votes goes up as there's more chance of overlap. But if a track is less diverse than its neighbours (e.g. Rick Ross) then its voters had more homogeneous ballots.
